MANIPULATION OF THE KINEMATIC CHAlN USING VISUAL BIOFEEDBACK

    Get PDF
Feedback has been shown to be an influential component in skill development, yet this has not been assessed in movements involving an explosive proximal to distal sequencing pattern. Novices (n=14) were introduced to a lunge touch task. Visual biofeedback were given on the timing and magnitude of rear leg kinematics. Results showed that those who received feedback adapted their movement patterns by developing extension velocity magnitudes in a summative pattern (pre v post, mean f SD peak ankle angular velocity: biofeedback; 479 * 181 v 889 k 11 7, control; 468 k 106 v 477 f 84 deg.s7), resulting in greater horizontal impulse (mean ? SD: biofeedback; 1.17 ? 0.60 v 1.7 & 0.89, control; 1.33 & 0.33 v 1-48? 0.33 M-s-kg7). The changes were retained after six weeks. These results demonstrate that knowledge of performance based biofeedback interventions alone are effective in developing whole limb contributions in an explosive task

Feedback has been shown to be an influential component in skill development, yet this has not been assessed longitudinally in a complex motor skill. Novices (n=32) were introduced to a lunge touch task. Visual biofeedback were given on the timing and magnitude of rear leg kinematics. Results showed that those who received feedback adapted their movement patterns by developing extension velocity magnitudes (40.0%, 24.8% and 28.9% increases for the hip, knee and ankle respectively). The changes were retained across 26 weeks, with a reducing visit schedule of feedback. These results demonstrate that knowledge of performance based biofeedback interventions alone are effective in developing whole limb contributions in an explosive task, and that a reducing visit schedule negates dependence on feedback

An applied paradigm for simple analysis of the lower limb kinematic chain in explosive movements: an example using the fencing foil attacking lunge

    Get PDF
A simple method to quantify the kinematic chain in a propulsive task would facilitate assessment of athlete effectiveness. The study’s aim was to assess if the kinematic chain distinguishes between skill levels. Fencers were separated into two groups based on attacking lunge ability (7 skilled; 8 novices). Rear leg 3D joint angular extension velocity magnitudes and timings, sword kinematics and rear leg kinetics were obtained in the propulsion phase of the attacking lunge. Skilled fencers obtained greater sword velocity (3.24 ± 0.24 m∙s−1 vs. 2.69 ± 0.29 m∙s−1; p = 0.02). The skilled group had a greater sequential kinematic chain of the hip, knee and ankle, demonstrated by significantly greater ankle angular velocity (9.1 ± 2.1 rad·s−1 skilled; 5.4 ± 2.9 rad·s−1 novice). Ankle plantarflexion velocity showed a strong positive correlation with horizontal peak force (r = 0.81; p < 0.01). The skilled group demonstrated greater horizontal impulse (1.85 ± 0.29 N·s·kg−1 skilled; 1.45 ± 0.32 N·s·kg−1 novice), suggesting greater effectiveness in applying the kinematic chain towards horizontal propulsion. Analysis of the kinematic chain, which was able to distinguish between skill levels in a propulsive task, is an effective and simple paradigm to assess whole limb contributions to propulsive movements

The Gifts We Keep on Giving: Documenting and Destigmatizing the Regifting Taboo

Five studies investigate whether the practice of "regifting"-a social taboo-is as offensive to givers as regifters assume. Participants who imagined regifting thought that the original givers would be more offended than givers reported feeling, to such an extent that receivers viewed regifting as similar in offensiveness to throwing gifts away (whereas givers clearly preferred the former). This asymmetry in emotional reactions to regifting was driven by an asymmetry in beliefs about entitlement. Givers believed that the act of gift giving passed "title" to the gift on to receivers-such that receivers were free to decide what to do with the gift; in contrast, receivers believed that givers retained some "say" in how their gifts were used. Finally, an intervention designed to destigmatize regifting by introducing a different normative standard (i.e., National Regifting Day) corrected the asymmetry in beliefs about entitlement and increased regifting

Microlensing induced spectral variability in Q2237+0305

We present both photometry and spectra of the individual images of the quadruple gravitational lens system Q2237+0305. Comparison of spectra obtained at two epochs, separated by ∼ 3 \sim~3\,years, shows evidence for significant changes in the emission line to continuum ratio of the strong ultraviolet CIV~λ\lambda1549, CIII]~λ\lambda1909 and MgII~λ\lambda2798 lines. The short, ∼ 1 \sim~1\,day, light--travel time differences between the sight lines to the four individual quasar images rule out any explanation based on intrinsic variability of the source. The spectroscopic differences thus represent direct detection of microlensing--induced spectroscopic differences in a quasar. The observations allow constraints to be placed on the relative spatial scales in the nucleus of the quasar, with the ultra--violet continuum arising in a region of \la~0.05~{\rm pc} in extent, while the broad emission line material is distributed on scales much greater than this.Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS. Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia in 57-year-old Woman with Borderline Serous Tumor of the Ovary: Real-Time Management of Common Pathways of Hemostatic Failure

    Get PDF
We present a case of a 57-year-old woman who underwent surgery for the removal of an ovarian mass but subsequently experienced microangioathic hemolytic anemia post-operatively, associated with fevers, renal insufficiency, hypertension, and hemolysis. While her clinical situations was initially suspicious for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), further sorting of clinical information led to other explanations of these findings, including a systemic inflammatory response. Multiple triggers of the coagulation system which can lead to a common pathway of hemostatic failure were considered, and specific criteria seen in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), TTP, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), catastrophic antiphospholipid anitbody syndrom (APS), all of which can seem to overlap when a physician is faced with distinguishing the diagnosis clinically. We propose a chronologic and strategic approach for the clinician to consider when approaching this diagnostic dilemma

IMPLICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL PREPARATION OF CADET MALE TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS: ANALYSIS OF THE 2013 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES FINAL

    Get PDF
The purpose of this case-study was to attain and describe data on the physical demands placed on elite Asian cadet male table tennis players in high-level competition. The 2013 Asian cadet singles final was notated live while the match was video recorded for further post-analysis. A typical point consisted of 4-5 shots with the player activated for 3.2 s, working for 3.3 s and resting for 17.8 s on average. The frequency of movement types was reported and typical footwork patterns were described for the most common movement types observed (step, linear jump, lateral jump and pivot). Typical footwork sequences were presented for the first two movements when serving and returning. This information could be used to inform a strength and conditioning programme for a developing cadet player seeking to replicate a playing style of an elite Asian cadet player

NOTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE CADET AND JUNIOR SINGLES TABLE TENNIS FINALS AT THE 2013 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The purpose of this paper was to provide a comparison between the two finals of the elite cadet and junior table tennis players. The 2013 Asian singles cadet and junior final matches were notated live and video recorded for further post-analysis. Junior players demonstrated a more variable serve placement strategy and favored the more aggressive topspin cross table return deep into the oppositions forehand. Work rate time was marginally greater per game in the junior finals (cadet vs. junior; 3.1s ± 1.7 3.3s ± 1.8) however junior players had a greater average rally length (5.3 s ± 2.6 and 4.4 ± 0.9) and greater number of high velocity top spin shots (21.5 ± 5.5 and 14.9 ± 5.6). Physicality and aggressive playing style increases with both age and ability level. These data provide a start to inform coaches of the progression between the top levels at both age groups

Using a complete spectroscopic survey to find red quasars and test the KX method

We present an investigation of quasar colour-redshift parameter space in order to search for radio-quiet red quasars and to test the ability of a variant of the KX quasar selection method to detect quasars over a full range of colour without bias. This is achieved by combining IRIS2 imaging with the complete Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey to probe parameter space unavailable to other surveys. We construct a new sample of 69 quasars with measured bJ - K colours. We show that the colour distribution of these quasars is significantly different from that of the Large Bright Quasar Survey's quasars at a 99.9% confidence level. We find 11 of our sample of 69 quasars have signifcantly red colours (bJ - K >= 3.5) and from this, we estimate the red quasar fraction of the K <= 18.4 quasar population to be 31%, and robustly constrain it to be at least 22%. We show that the KX method variant used here is more effective than the UVX selection method, and has less colour bias than optical colour-colour selection methods.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
