Management system requirements for wireless systems beyond 3G
This paper presents a comprehensive description of various management system requirements for systems beyond 3G, which have been identified as a result of the Software Based Systems activities within the Mobile VCE Core 2 program. Specific requirements for systems beyond 3G are discussed and potential technologies to address them proposed. The analysis has been carried out from network, service and security viewpoints
Exobiology in Earth orbit: The results of science workshops held at NASA, Ames Research Center
The Workshops on Exobiology in Earth Orbit were held to explore concepts for orbital experiments of exobiological interest and make recommendations on which classes of experiments should be carried out. Various observational and experimental opportunities in Earth orbit are described including those associated with the Space Shuttle laboratories, spacecraft deployed from the Space Shuttle and expendable launch vehicles, the Space Station, and lunar bases. Specific science issues and technology needs are summarized. Finally, a list of recommended experiments in the areas of observational exobiology, cosmic dust collection, and in situ experiments is presented
Non-linear photonic crystals as a source of entangled photons
Non-linear photonic crystals can be used to provide phase-matching for
frequency conversion in optically isotropic materials. The phase-matching
mechanism proposed here is a combination of form birefringence and phase
velocity dispersion in a periodic structure. Since the phase-matching relies on
the geometry of the photonic crystal, it becomes possible to use highly
non-linear materials. This is illustrated considering a one-dimensional
periodic AlGaAs / air structure for the generation of 1.5
m light. We show that phase-matching conditions used in schemes to create
entangled photon pairs can be achieved in photonic crystals.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Mortality associated with avian reovirus infection in a free-living magpie (Pica pica) in Great Britain
Avian reoviruses (ARVs) cause a range of disease presentations in domestic, captive and free-living bird species. ARVs have been reported as a cause of significant disease and mortality in free-living corvid species in North America and continental Europe. Until this report, there have been no confirmed cases of ARV-associated disease in British wild birds
Restrictive antibiotic stewardship associated with reduced hospital mortality in gram-negative infection
Introduction: Antimicrobial stewardship has an important role in the control of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) and antibiotic resistance. An important component of UK stewardship interventions is the restriction of broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics and promotion of agents associated with a lower risk of CDI such as gentamicin. Whilst the introduction of restrictive antibiotic guidance has been associated with improvements in CDI and antimicrobial resistance evidence of the effect on outcome following severe infection is lacking.
Methods: In 2008, Glasgow hospitals introduced a restrictive antibiotic guideline. A retrospective before/after study assessed outcome following gram-negative bacteraemia in the 2-year period around implementation.
Results: Introduction of restrictive antibiotic guidelines was associated with a reduction in utilisation of ceftriaxone and co-amoxiclav and an increase in amoxicillin and gentamicin. 1593 episodes of bacteraemia were included in the study. The mortality over 1 year following gram-negative bacteraemia was lower in the period following guideline implementation (RR 0.852, P = 0.045). There was no evidence of a difference in secondary outcomes including ITU admission, length of stay, readmission, recurrence of bacteraemia and need for renal replacement therapy. There was a fall in CDI (RR 0.571, P = 0.014) and a reduction in bacterial resistance to ceftriaxone and co-amoxiclav but no evidence of an increase in gentamicin resistance after guideline implementation.
Conclusion: Restrictive antibiotic guidelines were associated with a reduction in CDI and bacterial resistance but no evidence of adverse outcomes following gram-negative bacteraemia. There was a small reduction in one year mortality
Aggregates of two-dimensional vesicles: Rouleaux and sheets
Using both numerical and variational minimization of the bending and adhesion
energy of two-dimensional lipid vesicles, we study their aggregation, and we
find that the stable aggregates include an infinite number of vesicles and that
they arrange either in a columnar or in a sheet-like structure. We calculate
the stability diagram and we discuss the modes of transformation between the
two types of aggregates, showing that they include disintegration as well as

Magnonic Charge Pumping via Spin-Orbit Coupling
The interplay between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom has led to
the development of spintronic devices like spin-torque oscillators, spin-logic
devices, and spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memories. In this
development spin pumping, the process where pure spin-currents are generated
from magnetisation precession, has proved to be a powerful method for probing
spin physics and magnetisation dynamics. The effect originates from direct
conversion of low energy quantised spin-waves in the magnet, known as magnons,
into a flow of spins from the precessing magnet to adjacent normal metal leads.
The spin-pumping phenomenon represents a convenient way to electrically detect
magnetisation dynamics, however, precessing magnets have been limited so far to
pump pure spin currents, which require a secondary spin-charge conversion
element such as heavy metals with large spin Hall angle or multi-layer layouts
to be detectable. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge
pumping in which a precessing ferromagnet pumps a charge current, demonstrating
direct conversion of magnons into high-frequency currents via the relativistic
spin-orbit interaction. The generated electric current, differently from spin
currents generated by spin-pumping, can be directly detected without the need
of any additional spin to charge conversion mechanism and amplitude and phase
information about the relativistic current-driven magnetisation dynamics. The
charge-pumping phenomenon is generic and gives a deeper understanding of the
recently observed spin-orbit torques, of which it is the reciprocal effect and
which currently attract interest for their potential in manipulating magnetic
information. Furthermore, charge pumping provides a novel link between
magnetism and electricity and may find application in sourcing alternating

Mediatization of Emotion on Social Media: Forms and Norms in Digital Mourning Practices
This article provides the theoretical background for this Special Issue which explores the mediatization of emotion on social media as attested in different digital mourning practices. The overview discusses the affective and emotional turn alongside the mediatic turn in relation to key trends and foci in the study of affect/emotion. Our discussion points to a shift in conceptualizations of affect/emotion from mediated to mediatized practice, embedded in other social practices and subject to media and social media logics, affordances, and frames, which are worthy of empirical investigation. The article also presents key insights offered in the four articles of this Special Issue and foregrounds current and future directions in the study of mediatization, emotional sharing, and digital mourning practices
