Relative influence of shredders and fungi on leaf litter decomposition along a river altitudinal gradient
We compared autumn decomposition rates of European alder leaves at four sites along the LassetâHers River system, southern France, to test whether changes in litter decomposition rates from upstream (1,300 m elevation) to downstream (690 m) could be attributed to temperature-driven differences in microbial growth, shredder activity, or composition of the shredder community. Alder leaves lost 75â87% of original mass in 57 days, of which 46â67% could be attributed to microbial metabolism and 8â29% to shredder activity, with no trend along the river. Mass loss rates in both fine-mesh (excluding shredders) and coarse-mesh (including shredders) bags were faster at warm, downstream sites (mean daily temperature 7â8°C) than upstream (mean 1â2°C), but the differ- ence disappeared when rates were expressed in heat units to remove the temperature effect. Mycelial biomass did not correlate with mass loss rates. Faster mass loss rates upstream, after temperature correction, evidently arise from more efficient shredding by Nemourid stoneflies than by the Leuctra-dominated assemblage downstream. The influence of water temperature on decomposition rate is therefore expressed both directly, through microbial metabolism, and indirectly, through the structure of shredder commu- nities. These influences are evident even in cold water where temperature variation is small
Transmission patterns of smallpox: systematic review of natural outbreaks in Europe and North America since World War II
BACKGROUND: Because smallpox (variola major) may be used as a biological weapon, we reviewed outbreaks in post-World War II Europe and North America in order to understand smallpox transmission patterns. METHODS: A systematic review was used to identify papers from the National Library of Medicine, Embase, Biosis, Cochrane Library, Defense Technical Information Center, WorldCat, and reference lists of included publications. Two authors reviewed selected papers for smallpox outbreaks. RESULTS: 51 relevant outbreaks were identified from 1,389 publications. The median for the effective first generation reproduction rate (initial R) was 2 (range 0â38). The majority outbreaks were small (less than 5 cases) and contained within one generation. Outbreaks with few hospitalized patients had low initial R values (median of 1) and were prolonged if not initially recognized (median of 3 generations); outbreaks with mostly hospitalized patients had higher initial R values (median 12) and were shorter (median of 3 generations). Index cases with an atypical presentation of smallpox were less likely to have been diagnosed with smallpox; outbreaks in which the index case was not correctly diagnosed were larger (median of 27.5 cases) and longer (median of 3 generations) compared to outbreaks in which the index case was correctly diagnosed (median of 3 cases and 1 generation). CONCLUSION: Patterns of spread during Smallpox outbreaks varied with circumstances, but early detection and implementation of control measures is a most important influence on the magnitude of outbreaks. Pre-breeding blood urea nitrogen concentration and reproductive performance of Bonsmara heifers within different management systems
This study investigated the association between
pre-breeding blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and
reproductive performance of beef heifers within different
management systems in South Africa. Bonsmara heifers (n=
369) from five herds with different estimated levels of nitrogen
intake during the month prior to the commencement of the
breeding season were sampled in November and December
2010 to determine BUN concentrations. Body mass, age,
body condition score (BCS) and reproductive tract score
(RTS) were recorded at study enrolment. Trans-rectal ultrasound
and/or palpation was performed 4â8 weeks after a 3-
month breeding season to estimate the stage of pregnancy.
Days to pregnancy (DTP) was defined as the number of days
from the start of the breeding season until the estimated
conception date. Logistic regression and Cox proportional
hazards survival analysis were performed to estimate the
association of pre-breeding BUN concentration with subsequent
pregnancy and DTP, respectively. After stratifying for
herd and adjusting for age, heifers with relatively higher prebreeding
BUN concentration took longer to become pregnant
when compared to those with relatively lower BUN concentration
(P=0.011). In the herd with the highest estimated
nitrogen intake (n=143), heifers with relatively higher BUN
were less likely to become pregnant (P=0.013) and if they did,
it was only later during the breeding season (P=0.017), after
adjusting for body mass. These associations were not present
in the herd (n=106) with the lowest estimated nitrogen intake
(P>0.500). It is concluded that Bonsmara heifers with relatively
higher pre-breeding BUN concentration, might be at a
disadvantage because of this negative impact on reproductive performance, particularly when the production system includes
high levels of nitrogen intake.Faculty of

Differences in relative abundance and size structure of the sea stars Pisaster ochraceus and Evasterias troschelii among habitat types in Puget Sound, Washington, USA
We surveyed patterns in the relative abundance and size structure of the sea stars Pisaster ochraceus and Evasterias troschelii in five habitat types of varying structural complexity and prey availability (sand/cobble, boulder, and rocky intertidal; pilings; and floating docks) in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, Washington. For both species, small sea stars were most abundant in the most structurally complex habitat type (boulder), where they occurred almost exclusively under boulders during low tide. Larger individuals became more abundant as structural complexity decreased, occurring more frequently in open habitat types (rocky shores, pilings, and docks) known to have greater abundances of prey resources. Gull foraging observations and experiments demonstrated that exposed small sea stars of both species were highly vulnerable to predation, suggesting that small sea stars require structural complexity (crevice microhabitat) as a predation refuge. Large sea stars, once attaining a size refuge from predation, appear to migrate to more exposed habitat types with more abundant food resources. These results suggest parallel ontogenetic habitat shifts in two co-occurring consumer species related to a shared predation risk at early life stages and demonstrate how the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up processes may differ with ontogeny
