High genetic diversity of measles virus, World Health Organization European region, 2005-2006

    Get PDF
During 2005-2006, nine measles virus (MV) genotypes were identified throughout the World Health Organization European Region. All major epidemics were associated with genotypes D4, D6, and B3. Other genotypes (B2, D5, D8, D9, G2, and H1) were only found in limited numbers of cases after importation from other continents. The genetic diversity of endemic D6 strains was low; genotypes C2 and D7, circulating in Europe until recent years, were no longer identified. The transmission chains of several indigenous MV strains may thus have been interrupted by enhanced vaccination. However, multiple importations from Africa and Asia and virus introduction into highly mobile and unvaccinated communities caused a massive spread of D4 and B3 strains throughout much of the region. Thus, despite the reduction of endemic MV circulation, importation of MV from other continents caused prolonged circulation and large outbreaks after their introduction into unvaccinated and highly mobile communities

IntroductionThe J Project (JP) physician education and clinical research collaboration program was started in 2004 and includes by now 32 countries mostly in Eastern and Central Europe (ECE). Until the end of 2021, 344 inborn errors of immunity (IEI)-focused meetings were organized by the JP to raise awareness and facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of patients with IEI.ResultsIn this study, meeting profiles and major diagnostic and treatment parameters were studied. JP center leaders reported patients’ data from 30 countries representing a total population of 506 567 565. Two countries reported patients from JP centers (Konya, Turkey and Cairo University, Egypt). Diagnostic criteria were based on the 2020 update of classification by the IUIS Expert Committee on IEI. The number of JP meetings increased from 6 per year in 2004 and 2005 to 44 and 63 in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The cumulative number of meetings per country varied from 1 to 59 in various countries reflecting partly but not entirely the population of the respective countries. Altogether, 24,879 patients were reported giving an average prevalence of 4.9. Most of the patients had predominantly antibody deficiency (46,32%) followed by patients with combined immunodeficiencies (14.3%). The percentages of patients with bone marrow failure and phenocopies of IEI were less than 1 each. The number of patients was remarkably higher that those reported to the ESID Registry in 13 countries. Immunoglobulin (IgG) substitution was provided to 7,572 patients (5,693 intravenously) and 1,480 patients received hematopoietic stem cell therapy (HSCT). Searching for basic diagnostic parameters revealed the availability of immunochemistry and flow cytometry in 27 and 28 countries, respectively, and targeted gene sequencing and new generation sequencing was available in 21 and 18 countries. The number of IEI centers and experts in the field were 260 and 690, respectively. We found high correlation between the number of IEI centers and patients treated with intravenous IgG (IVIG) (correlation coefficient, cc, 0,916) and with those who were treated with HSCT (cc, 0,905). Similar correlation was found when the number of experts was compared with those treated with HSCT. However, the number of patients treated with subcutaneous Ig (SCIG) only slightly correlated with the number of experts (cc, 0,489) and no correlation was found between the number of centers and patients on SCIG (cc, 0,174).Conclusions1) this is the first study describing major diagnostic and treatment parameters of IEI care in countries of the JP; 2) the data suggest that the JP had tremendous impact on the development of IEI care in ECE; 3) our data help to define major future targets of JP activity in various countries; 4) we suggest that the number of IEI centers and IEI experts closely correlate to the most important treatment parameters; 5) we propose that specialist education among medical professionals plays pivotal role in increasing levels of diagnostics and adequate care of this vulnerable and still highly neglected patient population; 6) this study also provides the basis for further analysis of more specific aspects of IEI care including genetic diagnostics, disease specific prevalence, newborn screening and professional collaboration in JP countries

There are about 466 million people (6.1% of global population) with hearing impairment registered in the world according to the data from WHO experts. Their number exceeds 13 million in Russian Federation, and more than 1 million are children. The results of the universal audiological screening program for newborns has shown that 1 child per 1000 newborns is born deaf, another 2–3 children grow deaf during the first years of life. The number of people with hearing impairment will reach 900 million people by 2050 according to the WHO forecasts. Prevention and early diagnosis of hearing loss and rehabilitation of children with such disorders are necessary for avoiding problems with social integration. This review presents the analysis of cognitive abilities development in children and adolescents with different types and degrees of hearing loss with regard to different approaches in their management and rehabilitation

Oxidative destruction of organic pollutants on the polypropylene fiber modified by nanodispersed iron

This study aims to solve the problem of deep destruction of organic pollutants in industrial effluents by creating new composite materials with prescribed functional properties. This paper researches the possibility of using composites based on a polypropylene fiber under conditions of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous and aqueous-organic media. Dye that are water soluble (eosin, brilliant green, rhodamine C) and fat-soluble (blue, yellow and red) have been chosen as organic contaminants. Composites based on the polypropylene fiber have been obtained by introducing nanodispersed iron onto the surface of the initial polymer, using ion implantation and super high frequency irradiation methods. The obtained composites are characterized, and their photocatalytic activity is studied with respect to the pollutants under study in the conditions of the Fenton-like system and visible radiation. The results show that the obtained composite materials are effective catalysts for oxidative photodestruction of organic dyes in aqueous and aqueous-organic media, and their decolorization degree reaches 80–100%

In this work, we present a brief overview of sapphire medical instruments. Sapphire demonstrates a unique combination of physical properties, such as high hardness and chemical inertness, biocompatibility and high thermal conductivity, high transparency in a wide spectral range that makes it suitable for various medical applications. We demonstrate the examples of scalpel, capillary needle for laser therapy, neuroprobe and applicator for cryosurgery. Each of them combines different modalities in one instrument. Among them are tissue resection, therapy via electromagnetic wave delivering, aspiration, diagnosis, and tissue freezing. Sapphire instruments can be accompanied with magnetic resonance imaging and allow multiple sterilization

Irrational Drug Therapy as One of the Reasons of Medical Errors

The number of criminal cases against doctors has increased in recent years. The major reason for them was failure in delivery of any medical services that resulted in harm to health or death of the patient. The legislation of the Russian Federation for the medical industry is imperfect, however, the health care delivery failure can be associated with doctors’ non-compliance to the action algorithms specified by regulatory acts. The review has collected up-to-date legislative information regarding polypharmacy, off-label drug administration, irrational antibiotic therapy, that are neglected by doctors. Although, these problems become more and more crucial and they arouse interest of investigation bodies

The connection between antisocial creativity and values of students of pedagogical specialties

Scholars study various aspects of creativity: features of a creative personality; the impact of creativity on society; mechanisms and conditions for the development of creativity. Creativity is productive, makes the life of a person and society better, as well as promotes progress. At the same time, the phenomenon of creativity is not so definite since scholars distinguish such a variety as antisocial creativity, in which a person uses one’s creative potential against society and other people. This is reflected in specific research concerned with this phenomenon. It emphasizes the negative influence of the antisocial creativity of teachers on the forming personality of students and the effectiveness of education. The study objective is to study the antisocial creativity of future teachers and its connection with values and basic beliefs. The methods of testing, polling, mathematical statistics (correlation analysis) were used in the course of the study. This empirical study has revealed strong links between antisocial creativity and the age of respondents. As a result, antisocial creativity is connected with such values of social groups as conformism, tradition (inverse correlation); self-direction, power and achievement (direct correlation). A negative correlation with the humor scale allows the authors to conclude that this type of antisocial creativity is a kind of defense. For the first time, this ascertaining study has considered the specifics of antisocial creativity of students of pedagogical specialties with due regard to their beliefs and values. The promising areas of research on the antisocial creativity of future teachers include identifying both personal and social determinants of this phenomenon
