Epigenetics is a branch of genetics that focuses on the heritable changes of DNA or associated proteins, other than DNA sequence variations, which carry information content during cell division [1,2]. These heritable changes are ascribed to chromatin, which constitutes the ultrastructure of DNA and whose modifications affect the genetic material functionality. Differences in chromatin structure have been associated to transcription regulation [3-5] and chromosome stability [6,7], affecting both gene’s information, expression and heritability. Noteworthy, these epigenetic modifications are involved in both transcriptional activation and repression, indicating their widespread role as modulators of gene expression in numerous biological processes [8,9]. Chromatin is subjected to numerous modifications roughly classified in two groups: DNA and histone post-translational modifications (histone-PTMs). DNA methylation is the most studied epigenetic modification of DNA and corresponds to the covalent addition of a methyl (CH3) group to the nucleotide cytosine within CG dinucleotides or CNG trinucleotides where N can be C, A, G or T. Usually, DNA methylation induces decreased protein-DNA binding of transcription factors and leads to the repression of gene expression [10]. DNA “methylable” sequences are not uniform across the human genome but restricted in CpG rich DNA regions termed CpG islands (CGI). CGI are localized at repetitive sequences, heavy methylated, to prevent the reactivation of endoparasitic sequences such as transposons, and at gene promoter sequences, which are normally refractory to methylation in normal somatic cells [8,11].</br

Collective behavior of oscillating electric dipoles

The present work reports about the dynamics of a collection of randomly distributed, and randomly oriented, oscillators in 3D space, coupled by an interaction potential falling as 1/r31/r^3, where r stands for the inter-particle distance. This model schematically represents a collection of identical biomolecules, coherently vibrating at some common frequency, coupled with a 1/r31/r^3 potential stemming from the electrodynamic interaction between oscillating dipoles. The oscillating dipole moment of each molecule being a direct consequence of its coherent (collective) vibration. By changing the average distance among the molecules, neat and substantial changes in the power spectrum of the time variation of a collective observable are found. As the average intermolecular distance can be varied by changing the concentration of the solvated molecules, and as the collective variable investigated is proportional to the projection of the total dipole moment of the model biomolecules on a coordinate plane, we have found a prospective experimental strategy of spectroscopic kind to check whether the mentioned intermolecular electrodynamic interactions can be strong enough to be detectable, and thus to be of possible relevance to biology.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

Dynamics for Systems of Screw Dislocations

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is the analytical validation of a model of Cermelli and Gurtin for an evolution law for systems of screw dislocations under the assumption of antiplane shear. The motion of the dislocations is restricted to a discrete set of glide directions, which are properties of the material. The evolution law is given by a "maximal dissipation criterion", leading to a system of differential inclusions. Short time existence, uniqueness, cross-slip, and fine cross-slip of solutions are proved.Comment: 35 pages, 5 figure

Thanks to archeology , prehistory has been documented in a number of elements to investigate past devoid of writing. The lithic industry and later wood and ivory objects will studied in the early cultures of humanity. With the arrival of the metallurgy, objects become more complex, more enduring and turn show the number of changes in both societies economically and culturally or socially. From a spearhead culture will develop And Middle Bronze Age in Northern Europe. The cult of cars Bronze Final will be used to analyze the culture of urnfields Central Europe. The Villanovan , Hallstatt culture and skyline orientalizante that took place during the First Iron Age be studied from a shopping Bisenzio, Prince of the couch Hochdorf , urn of Sopron and Benvenuti situla . Finally , the culture of Second La Tène Iron Age will be investigated starting from a series of brooches and Holcombe mirror

Supernova neutrino physics with xenon dark matter detectors: A timely perspective

    Get PDF
Dark matter detectors that utilize liquid xenon have now achieved tonne-scale targets, giving them sensitivity to all flavours of supernova neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. Considering for the first time a realistic detector model, we simulate the expected supernova neutrino signal for different progenitor masses and nuclear equations of state in existing and upcoming dual-phase liquid xenon experiments. We show that the proportional scintillation signal (S2) of a dual-phase detector allows for a clear observation of the neutrino signal and guarantees a particularly low energy threshold, while the backgrounds are rendered negligible during the supernova burst. XENON1T (XENONnT and LZ; DARWIN) experiments will be sensitive to a supernova burst up to 25 (35; 65) kpc from Earth at a significance of more than 5 sigma, observing approximately 35 (123; 704) events from a 27 Msun supernova progenitor at 10 kpc. Moreover, it will be possible to measure the average neutrino energy of all flavours, to constrain the total explosion energy, and to reconstruct the supernova neutrino light curve. Our results suggest that a large xenon detector such as DARWIN will be competitive with dedicated neutrino telescopes, while providing complementary information that is not otherwise accessible.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. Studying the funding principles for integrating Asset Management in Operations: an empirical research in production companies

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to investigate Asset Management (AM) implementation as a business process within production systems to contribute to operational excellence. The main fundamentals to be considered to properly implement AM within production companies according to the existing literature and standards are identified and they are: two dimensions - i.e., the asset life cycle (Beginning of Life, Middle of Life, End of Life phases) and the hierarchical level of the asset-control activities (strategic level, tactical level, operational level) - and four funding principles - i.e., life cycle orientation, system orientation, risk orientation and asset-centric orientation. An empirical investigation is then developed through multiple case-study involving eight production companies in Italy, in order to assess the level of orientation towards those funding principles within production companies as it is nowadays, in order to identify existing gaps and areas for improvements
