Religions et spiritualités dans les prisons en Suisse

L’univers carcéral suisse présente des spécificités quant à la place faite au religieux et au spirituel, de par les mutations du paysage religieux ces dernières décennies ainsi que le système fédéral qui offre une marge de manœuvre à chaque canton dans leur gestion du phénomène religieux. D’une part, le processus de sécularisation de la société suisse, c’est-à-dire la perte d’importance des Eglises reconnues (catholique et réformée) dans le quotidien et l’organisation de la société, a eu des impacts considérables sur leur rôle et leur statut au sein des établissements pénitentiaires. D’autres part, le pluralisation religieuse, favorisée notamment par les flux migratoires, pose d’importants défis aux aumôneries et aux directions des prisons qui doivent répondre aux demandes d’un public toujours plus diversifié sur le plan religieux et culturel. Ce chapitre entend décortiquer les particularités du cas helvétiques dans ses dimensions historiques, démographiques et légales, tout en offrant une place importante à des analyses de cas empiriques

The contribution on prisons summarizes the research done on the historical role of religion for penitentiary institutions, on religious practices of inmates, as well as on various forms of spiritual care and the power issues at work

Institutional Resistance to Religious Diversity in Prisons: Comparative Reflections Based on Studies in Eastern Germany, Italy and Switzerland

This article explores the way in which prison institutions resist to religious diversity in three national contexts: Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The author observes a phenomenon which contributes to this resistance and that she calls ‘institutional neutralisation of Christianity'. Although they are secular state institutions, prisons' profound Christian heritage impacts at a variety of levels beyond their chaplaincies. With the help of Durkheim's and Foucault's contributions on punishment, the author identifies in the punishment-rehabilitation complex a mediator of this Christian heritage contributing to its institutional neutralisation. An illustration of these theoretical insights by empirical observation concludes the article
