    Limitations of light delay and storage times in EIT experiments with condensates

    We investigate the limitations arising from atomic collisions on the storage and delay times of probe pulses in EIT experiments. We find that the atomic collisions can be described by an effective decay rate that limits storage and delay times. We calculate the momentum and temperature dependence of the decay rate and find that it is necessary to excite atoms at a particular momentum depending on temperature and spacing of the energy levels involved in order to minimize the decoherence effects of atomic collisions.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 figures.     Dynamically turning off interactions in a two component condensate

    We propose a mechanism to change the interaction strengths of a two component condensate. It is shown that the application of pi/2 pulses allows to alter the effective interspecies interaction strength as well as the effective interaction strength between particles of the same kind. This mechanism provides a simple method to transform spatially stable condensates into unstable once and vice versa. It also provides a means to store a squeezed spin state by turning off the interaction for the internal states and thus allows to gain control over many body entangled states.Comment: 7 pages 5 figures, symbols changed, minor changes, to appear in Phys.     Quantum Corrections to Dilute Bose Liquids

    It was recently shown (A. Bulgac. Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 050402 (2002)) that an entirely new class of quantum liquids with widely tunable properties could be manufactured from bosons (boselets), fermions (fermilets) and their mixtures (ferbolets) by controlling their interaction properties by the means of a Feshbach resonance. We extend the previous mean--field analysis of these quantum liquids by computing the lowest order quantum corrections to the ground state energy and the depletion of the Bose--Einstein condensate and by estimating higher order corrections as well. We show that the quantum corrections are relatively small and controlled by the diluteness parameter n∣a∣3≪1\sqrt{n|a|^3} \ll 1, even though strictly speaking in this case there is no low density expansion.Comment: final published version, typos corrected, updated references and added one referenc

    Early detection and prevention of delirium in older patients with cancer

    Delirium poses a common and multifactorial complication in older patients with cancer. Delirium independently contributes to poorer clinical outcomes and impedes communication between patients with cancer, their family and health care providers. Because of its clinical impact and potential reversibility, efforts for prevention, early recognition or prompt treatment are critical. However, nurses and other health care providers often fail to recognize delirium or misattribute its symptoms to dementia, depression or old age. Yet, failure to determine an individual's risk for delirium can initiate the cascade of negative events causing additional distress for patients, family and health care providers alike. Therefore, parameters for determining an individual's risk for delirium and guidelines for the routine and systematic assessment of cognitive functioning are provided to form a basis for the prompt and accurate diagnosis of delirium. Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of delirium are also discussed
