    New CMB Power Spectrum Constraints from MSAMI

    We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10 square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2 icm to 20 icm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of our analysis methods, compare the results from the three flights, derive new constraints on the CMB power spectrum from the combined data and reduce the data to total-power Wiener-filtered maps of the CMB. A key feature of this new analysis is a determination of the amplitude of CMB fluctuations at ℓ∼400\ell \sim 400.     Precision reconstruction of the cold dark matter-neutrino relative velocity fromN-body simulations

    Discovering the mass of neutrinos is a principle goal in high energy physics and cosmology. In addition to cosmological measurements based on two-point statistics, the neutrino mass can also be estimated by observations of neutrino wakes resulting from the relative motion between cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrinos. Such a detection relies on an accurate reconstruction of the CDM-neutrino relative velocity which is affected by nonlinear structure growth and galaxy bias. We investigate our ability to reconstruct this relative velocity using large N-body simulations where we evolve neutrinos as distinct particles alongside the CDM. We find that the CDM velocity power spectrum is overpredicted by linear theory whereas the neutrino velocity power spectrum is underpredicted. The magnitude of the relative velocity observed in the simulations is found to be lower than what is predicted in linear theory. Since neither the CDM nor the neutrino velocity fields are directly observable from galaxy or 21 cm surveys, we test the accuracy of a reconstruction algorithm based on halo density fields and linear theory. Assuming prior knowledge of the halo bias, we find that the reconstructed relative velocities are highly correlated with the simulated ones with correlation coefficients of 0.94, 0.93, 0.92 and 0.88 for neutrinos of mass 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 eV.     MSAM1-94: repeated measurement of medium-scale anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation

    The second flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-94) observed the same field as the first flight (MSAM1-92) to confirm our earlier measurement of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropy. This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of \pm40\arcmin, and simultaneously measures single and double differenced sky signals. We observe in four spectral channels centered at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, providing sensitivity to the peak of the CMBR and to thermal emission from interstellar dust. The dust component correlates well with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR observations in our double difference channel correlate well with the earlier observations, but the single difference channel shows some discrepancies. We obtain a detection of fluctuations in the MSAM1-94 dataset that match CMBR in our spectral bands of \Delta T/T = 1.9^{+1.3}_{-0.7}\times 10^{-5} (90\% confidence interval, including calibration uncertainty) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg3, using the double difference demodulation

    A Measurement of the Medium-Scale Anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

    Observations from the first flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM) are analyzed to place limits on Gaussian fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR). This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of \pm40\arcmin; the resulting data is analyzed in statistically independent single and double difference datasets. We observe in four spectral channels at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, allowing the separation of interstellar dust emission from CMBR fluctuations. The dust component is correlated with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR component has two regions where the signature of an unresolved source is seen. Rejecting these two source regions, we obtain a detection of fluctuations which match CMBR in our spectral bands of 0.6×10−5<ΔT/T<2.2×10−50.6 \times 10^{-5} < \Delta T/T < 2.2 \times 10^{-5} (90\% CL interval) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg5, using the single difference demodulation. For the double difference demodulation, the result is 1.1×10−5<ΔT/T<3.1×10−51.1 \times 10^{-5} < \Delta T/T < 3.1 \times 10^{-5} (90\% CL interval) at a correlation angle of 0\fdg3.Comment: 13 pages + 3 figures (included), LaTeX + AASTeX v3.

    An On-the-Road Comparison of In-Vehicle Navigation Assistance Systems

    We compared system performance and driver opinion of 3 in-vehicle navigation aids - two advanced traveler information systems (ATISs; Ali-Scout and TetraStar) and written instructions - when used on the road concurrently under identical conditions. Few drivers in the study had difficulty finding initial routes or became lost. Users of Ali-Scout, an ATIS that utilizes traffic information in routing, drove longer-distance routes, got lost more frequently, and gave their system less positive ratings than did TetraStar users. Users of the 2 ATISs traversed routes that were significantly shorter in duration than those driven by users of written instructions. The time savings benefit of the advanced technology systems over written instructions was greatest during peak traffic conditions. Drivers who were familiar with the road network, overall, had less difficulty finding destinations and drove shorter-duration routes than drivers who were unfamiliar with the road network.     The effect of high dose antibiotic impregnated cement on rate of surgical site infection after hip hemiarthroplasty for fractured neck of femur : a protocol for a double-blind quasi randomised controlled trial

    Background: Mortality following hip hemiarthroplasty is in the range of 10-40% in the first year, with much attributed to post-operative complications. One such complication is surgical site infection (SSI), which at the start of this trial affected 4.68% of patients in the UK having this operation. Compared to SSI rates of elective hip surgery, at less than 1%, this figure is elevated. The aim of this quasi randomised controlled trial (RCT) is to determine if high dose antibiotic impregnated cement can reduce the SSI in patients at 12-months after hemiarthroplasty for intracapsular fractured neck of femur. Methods: 848 patients with an intracapsular fractured neck of femur requiring a hip hemiarthroplasty are been recruited into this two-centre double-blind quasi RCT. Participants were recruited before surgery and quasi randomised to standard care or intervention group. Participants, statistician and outcome assessors were blind to treatment allocation throughout the study. The intervention consisted of high dose antibiotic impregnated cement consisting of 1 gram Clindamycin and 1 gram of Gentamicin. The primary outcome is Health Protection Agency (HPA) defined deep surgical site infection at 12 months. Secondary outcomes include HPA defined superficial surgical site infection at 30 days, 30 and 90-day mortality, length of hospital stay, critical care stay, and complications. Discussion: Large randomised controlled trials assessing the effectiveness of a surgical intervention are uncommon, particularly in the speciality of orthopaedics. The results from this trial will inform evidence-based recommendations for antibiotic impregnated cement in the management of patients with a fractured neck of femur undergoing a hip hemiarthroplasty. If high dose antibiotic impregnated cement is found to be an effective intervention, implementation into clinical practice could improve long-term outcomes for patients undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty
