Design of an External Waste Rock Dump in an Opencast Coal Mine Standing Against a Hill in Seismic Prone Area of India

    Get PDF
Landslides in external waste dump(i.e. waste rock material dumped outside the quarry) of Tikak opencast coal project, North Eastern Coalfield(NEC), (located in north eastern part of India) is a major hindrance to sustain coal production of 0.6-0.7 million ton per annum from NEC. The external dump is standing against a hill slope of 8 degree inclination and the quarry operation is going on the other side of the hill (Fig1). The present height of the external dump is 80metre which is planned to be increased to 180m. The project is situated in seismic zone – V of Indian seismic map with basic horizontal seismic co-efficient of 0.08 and the vibration co-efficient in the dump due to blast vibration in the quarry is 0.06. This study discusses the methodology to tackle the above problem of Slope Stability of external dump which is planned for 180m

Slope Stability Study of External Dump of Sonepur-Bazari Opencast Coal Mine, India — A Case Study

India has reached the forefront of the world coal scene, ranking third in the total coal production, largely due to rapid increase in production from its opencast coal mines. But with a very high density of population, India is in a very disadvantageous position in acquiring large tracts of land for open cast coal mining which involves handling of large volume of waste rock overburden, a portion of which is to be dumped outside the quarry in a convenient place considering the safety, environment and economical aspects. This waste material dumped outside the quarry is termed as external dump. This paper deals with a specific case study of Sonepur-Bazari opencast coal mine, (located in eastern part of India) which has experienced floor heaving near toe of 75metre high external dump standing above 15m thick clay strata fully saturated with water (Fig1). The methodology to tackle the problem of floor heaving by undertaking detailed Slope Stability study and its recommendation is discussed in this paper

APPLICATIONS OF GOLD NANOPARTICLES IN CLINICAL MEDICINE

    Get PDF
Gold based nanoparticles, owing to their unique optical properties at the nanoscale, biocompatibility, and rich surface chemistry, have attracted considerable attention from the material science and biomedical community. Although colloidal gold has been used since ancient times in various therapeutic applications, a better understanding of the physical attributes of nanosized gold has led to a burst of research activity in the past twenty years related to their synthesis and biomedical applications. Novel strategies for the synthesis of nanosized gold of various shapes and morphologies have been put forward, which includes nanospheres, nanorods, nanocages, nanoshells, etc. Both the absorption and scattering properties of nanosized gold, along with their facile conjugation with different biomolecules, has been exploited in the development of a number of bioanalytical assays and protocols, related to the quantification of nucleic acids, proteins, other small biomolecules, etc. In addition, gold nanoparticles are being increasingly used for in vivo imaging applications for the early diagnosis of cancer. Finally, gold nanoparticles are playing a significant role in nanotherapeutic applications, either as drug carriers or as the drug itself in light-activated photothermal therapy. Several gold-nanoparticle based Bioanalytical assays and therapeutic applications are in the active clinical development phase. This chapter will provide examples of the various biomedical applications of gold nanoparticles with potential for clinical translation. Keywords: Gold nanoparticles, Theranostics, SPR, Colorimetric biosensing, SERC, In vitro diagnostics, PTT, PD

Why doesn’t the BJP face greater resistance from lower castes in Gujarat? Part 2

In Part 1 of this post, LSE’s Dr Manali Desai (Department of Sociology) and Dr Indrajit Roy (Research Fellow at Queen Elizabeth House) ask why the BJP does not face greater resistance from the lower castes in Gujarat. Using a political subjectivity lens, they argue that the social engineering of consensus around the promise and premise of development has generated support for Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Here, they explore two other factors for support for Modi among constituencies that one might have expected to oppose him

LSE’s Dr Manali Desai (Department of Sociology) along with Dr Indrajit Roy (Research Fellow at Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford) recently conducted interviews across several communities in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as part of the Leverhulme research project Beyond Identity? Markets and Logics of Democratisation in India, 1991-Present. The interviews reveal the contested and ambivalent character of political subjectivities among certain communities in the state, raising questions about narratives of Hindutva in Gujarat
