Large Extra Dimension effects through Light-by-Light Scattering at the CERN LHC
Observing light-by-light scattering at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has
received quite some attention and it is believed to be a clean and sensitive
channel to possible new physics. In this paper, we study the diphoton
production at the LHC via the process through graviton exchange in the Large Extra
Dimension (LED) model. Typically, when we do the background analysis, we also
study the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) of production. We
compare its production in the quark-quark collision mode to the gluon-gluon
collision mode and find that contributions from the gluon-gluon collision mode
are comparable to the quark-quark one. Our result shows, for extra dimension
, with an integrated luminosity at the
14 TeV LHC, that diphoton production through graviton exchange can probe the
LED effects up to the scale for the forward

More evidence for a one-to-one correlation between Sprites and Early VLF perturbations
Past studies have shown a correlation between sprites and early VLF perturbations, but the reported correlation varies widely from ?50% to 100%. The present study resolves these large discrepancies by analyzing several case studies of sprite and narrowband VLF observations, in which multiple transmitter-receiver VLF pairs with great circle paths (GCPs) passing near a sprite-producing thunderstorm were available. In this setup, the multiple paths act in a complementary way that makes the detection of early VLF perturbations much more probable compared to a single VLF path that can miss several of them, a fact that was overlooked in past studies. The evidence shows that visible sprite occurrences are accompanied by early VLF perturbations in a one-to-one correspondence. This implies that the sprite generation mechanism may cause also sub-ionospheric conductivity disturbances that produce early VLF events. However, the one-to-one visible sprite to early VLF event correspondence, if viewed conversely, appears not to be always reciprocal. This is because the number of early events detected in some case studies was considerably larger than the number of visible sprites. Since the great majority of the early events not accompanied by visible sprites appeared to be caused by positive cloud to ground (+CG) lightning discharges, it is possible that sprites or sprite halos were concurrently present in these events as well but were missed by the sprite-watch camera detection system. In order for this option to be resolved we need more studies using highly sensitive optical systems capable of detecting weaker sprites, sprite halos and elves.</p
Myeloid-Specific Rictor Deletion Induces M1 Macrophage Polarization and Potentiates In Vivo Pro-Inflammatory Response to Lipopolysaccharide
The phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) axis plays a central role in attenuating inflammation upon macrophage stimulation with toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands. The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) relays signal from PI3K to Akt but its role in modulating inflammation in vivo has never been investigated. To evaluate the role of mTORC2 in the regulation of inflammation in vivo, we have generated a mouse model lacking Rictor, an essential mTORC2 component, in myeloid cells. Primary macrophages isolated from myeloid-specific Rictor null mice exhibited an exaggerated response to TLRs ligands, and expressed high levels of M1 genes and lower levels of M2 markers. To determine whether the loss of Rictor similarly affected inflammation in vivo, mice were either fed a high fat diet, a situation promoting chronic but low-grade inflammation, or were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which mimics an acute, severe septic inflammatory condition. Although high fat feeding contributed to promote obesity, inflammation, macrophage infiltration in adipose tissue and systemic insulin resistance, we did not observe a significant impact of Rictor loss on these parameters. However, mice lacking Rictor exhibited a higher sensitivity to sceptic shock when injected with LPS. Altogether, these results indicate that mTORC2 is a key negative regulator of macrophages TLR signalling and that its role in modulating inflammation is particularly important in the context of severe inflammatory challenges. Magnetar outbursts: an observational review
Transient outbursts from magnetars have shown to be a key property of their
emission, and one of the main way to discover new sources of this class. From
the discovery of the first transient event around 2003, we now count about a
dozen of outbursts, which increased the number of these strongly magnetic
neutron stars by a third in six years. Magnetar outbursts might involve their
multi-band emission resulting in an increased activity from radio to hard
X-ray, usually with a soft X-ray flux increasing by a factor of 10-1000 with
respect to the quiescent level. A connected X-ray spectral evolution is also
often observed, with a spectral softening during the outburst decay. The flux
decay times vary a lot from source to source, ranging from a few weeks to
several years, as also the decay law which can be exponential-like, a power-law
or even multiple power-laws can be required to model the flux decrease. We
review here on the latest observational results on the multi-band emission of
magnetars, and summarize one by one all the transient events which could be

Anthropogenic Space Weather
Anthropogenic effects on the space environment started in the late 19th
century and reached their peak in the 1960s when high-altitude nuclear
explosions were carried out by the USA and the Soviet Union. These explosions
created artificial radiation belts near Earth that resulted in major damages to
several satellites. Another, unexpected impact of the high-altitude nuclear
tests was the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that can have devastating effects
over a large geographic area (as large as the continental United States). Other
anthropogenic impacts on the space environment include chemical release ex-
periments, high-frequency wave heating of the ionosphere and the interaction of
VLF waves with the radiation belts. This paper reviews the fundamental physical
process behind these phenomena and discusses the observations of their impacts.Comment: 71 pages, 35 figure
Search for electromagnetic properties of the neutrinos at the LHC
Exclusive production of neutrinos via photon-photon fusion provides an
excellent opportunity to probe electromagnetic properties of the neutrinos at
the LHC. We explore the potential of processes pp-> p gamma gamma p -> p nu
anti-nu p and pp -> p gamma gamma p -> p nu anti-nu Z p to probe
neutrino-photon and neutrino-two photon couplings. We show that these reactions
provide more than seven orders of magnitude improvement in neutrino-two photon

Comparisons of environmental effects and productivity by road construction machines in forest areas in Turkey
In this study, forest road construction techniques, environmental damages, cross sections and productivity by using hydraulic excavator and bulldozer were investigated in forested lands in Antalya and Eskisehir region in Turkey. Maximum length of fill slope for bulldozer and excavator were found 17 m on 80% slope gradient and 11 m on same slope gradient, respectively. The costs of forest roads for bulldozer and excavator were calculated to be 21.8 US dollars/m and 8.5 US dollars/m, respectively. Productivity of bulldozer and excavator were found to be 105.8 and 66.2 m3/h, respectively. The types of environmental damages on trees were determined and found to be wounded, bending and crushing. In this study, 23% of trees under the forest road construction by excavator are damaged and 40% of trees by bulldozer are damaged for 45 - 90% ground slope.Key words: Hydraulic excavator, bulldozer, forest road, road construction, environmental damage, construction cost
