A comparative study of populations of Ectopleura crocea and Ectopleura ralphi (Hydrozoa, Tubulariidae) from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean

Ectopleura crocea (L. Agassiz, 1862) and Ectopleura ralphi (Bale, 1884) are two of the nominal tubulariid species re-corded for the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWAO), presumably with wide but disjunct geographical ranges and similar morphologies. Our goal is to bring together data from morphology, histology, morphometry, cnidome, and molecules (COI and ITS1+5.8S) to assess the taxonomic identity of two populations of these nominal species in the SWAO. We have ob-served no significant difference or distributional patterns between the so-called Brazilian E. ralphi and Argentine E. cro-cea for both morphological and molecular data. Therefore, SWAO populations of Ectopleura belong to the same species. In a broader view, it is difficult to find decisive character distinguishing E. crocea from E. ralphi, and both species have indeed recently been synonymized, with the binomen E. crocea having nomenclatural priority. Geographically broader genetic analysis should be carried out in order to test the validity of this synonymy because taxonomical procedures such as studying type specimens and documenting broad phenotypic variability have not yet been conducted.Fil: Antunes Imazu, Mauricio. Multi-Layer Distributed Storage of LHD Plasma Diagnostic Database

    Get PDF
At the end of LHD experimental campaign in 2003, the amount of whole plasma diagnostics raw data had reached 3.16 GB in a long-pulse experiment. This is a new world record in fusion plasma experiments, far beyond the previous value of 1.5 GB/shot. The total size of the LHD diagnostic data is about 21.6 TB for the whole six years of experiments, and it continues to grow at an increasing rate. The LHD diagnostic database and storage system, i.e. the LABCOM system, has a completely distributed architecture to be sufficiently flexible and easily expandable to maintain integrity of the total amount of data. It has three categories of the storage layer: OODBMS volumes in data acquisition servers, RAID servers, and mass storage systems, such as MO jukeboxes and DVD-R changers. These are equally accessible through the network. By data migration between them, they can be considered a virtual OODB extension area. Their data contents have been listed in a “facilitator” PostgreSQL RDBMS, which now contains about 6.2 million entries, and informs the optimized priority to clients requesting data. Using the “glib” compression for all of the binary data and applying the three-tier application model for the OODB data transfer/retrieval, an optimized OODB read-out rate of 1.7 MB/s and effective client access speed of 3?25 MB/s have been achieved. As a result, the LABCOM data system has succeeded in combination of the use of RDBMS, OODBMS, RAID, and MSS to enable a virtual and always expandable storage volume, simultaneously with rapid data access

Study on Susceptibilities of Superconductors BaPtSb and BaPtAs with Honeycomb Structure

The low-energy electronic properties of the new superconductors BaPtSb and BaPtAs with an ordered honeycomb network are investigated in the normal phase, where the former compound is a candidate for time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductors. By means of the first-principles calculation, we show that there exist two-dimensional cylinder-like Fermi surfaces around the kz axis and one outer spherelike Fermi surface around the K and K' points in both compounds, which are mainly composed of Pt 5d and Sb 5p/As 4p electrons. We construct low-energy effective models, which are well described by using three bands consisting of two Pt 5d orbitals and one Sb 5p/As 4p orbital. By evaluating susceptibilities using effective models, we find that dominant contributions to those susceptibilities result from the outer spherelike Fermi surface. Whereas out-of-plane fluctuations are enhanced in both compounds in the higher-temperature region, in-plane fluctuations become dominant in the very low-temperature region in BaPtSb owing to a better nesting condition in the k_z=0 plane from the outer spherelike Fermi surface. These fluctuations yield instabilities to ordered states, such as superconductivity, and might be associated with the occurrence of the superconducting state with time-reversal symmetry breaking in BaPtSb.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

Emergency medical support system for visualizing locations and vital signs of patients in Mass Casualty Incident

PerNEM 2012 : Pervasive Networks for Emergency Management , Mar 23, 2012 , Lugano, SwitzerlandThe triage tag is used in Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) to check the priority of patients treatments and conditions. However, it is difficult to grasp a change in the patient's information since it is a paper tag. In this paper, we propose a system using the electronic triage tag (eTriage) that facilitates emergency medical technicians to grasp patients locations and conditions through visualization. This system provides the following three views of the patients information: (1) Inter-site view which shows on a map an overview of the latest status in multiple first-aid stations including the number of technicians and patients of each triage category; (2) Intra-site view which shows detailed status of each first-aid station including the location, triage category, and vital signs of each patient on a 3D map created based on the environment mapping technique; and (3) Individual view which shows vital information of patients on a tablet PC according to its orientation using the augmented reality technique. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the proposed system with some preliminary evaluation results

If a person has learning difficulties due to developmental disabilities or other reasons, learning may be facilitated by using tablets or other devices to add phonetic cues above kanji characters, to use text-to-speech, and/or to enlarge the image of materials. In the“ Survey and Research on Efficient Production Methods for Audio Teaching/Learning Materials” of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology-Japan, six organizations have been entrusted with the project and are providing the teaching materials to children. One of such organizations is Hiroshima University. We used to call the teaching material “e-Pat” until 2021. It came with functions of viewing pages as they read the textbooks (original mode) and reading aloud on the text-only screen (reflow mode). To aim for efficient production and effective dissemination of the e-Pat, the users’ school officials and parents/guardians were given questionnaires on the method of providing the material, how well users learned using the material, and additional functions desired for such materials. The e-Pat was most frequently used during classroom lessons, especially in normal classes. Many also felt the e-Pat application process (applied by schools) to be easy. Many also felt that the e-Pat helped them read sentences and Kanji characters. Many also requested to add text-to-speech functions and phonetic cues above Kanji characters in the original mode. Improved text-to-speech materials according to the needs of users are desired.本研究はJPSP 科研費JP21H00888の助成を受けたものです
