    Performance of Wood Products as Media for Culture of Anthuriums

    A study was conducted on Anthurium andraeanum Andre cv. Kozohara Red testing wood bark, wood chips, redwood bark, and bagasse media with fertilizer levels of 100, 200, and 400lb N-P205 -K20/A/year. Media ranking from best to poorest for flower production, flower stem length, and flower size were wood bark > wood chips > bagasse = redwood bark. Flower production and flower size increased linearly with increase in fertilizer rate. Flower stem length was not affected by fertilizer rate. Fertilizer response was similar on all media

    Insulin-like growth factor 1 prevents neuronal cell death and paraplegia in the rabbit model of spinal cord ischemia

    AbstractObjective: Insulin-like growth factor 1 has been shown to be cytoprotective against ischemia-reperfusion injury in various organs. However, spinal cord protection by insulin-like growth factor 1 has not been tested. We have therefore examined the effect of insulin-like growth factor 1 on neuronal cell death and motor function after spinal cord ischemia. Methods: Japanese white rabbits were subjected to spinal cord ischemia by clamping the abdominal aorta for 15 minutes. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (0.3 mg/kg) at a dose equipotent to insulin (0.3 IU/kg) in lowering blood glucose level or the control (phosphate-buffered saline solution as a vehicle) was administered intravenously 30 minutes before the aortic clamp. Results: Hind-limb motor function had recovered normally 48 hours after the operation in all the rabbits (n = 8) treated with insulin-like growth factor 1. In contrast, all the control-treated (n = 8) and all but one of the insulin-treated (n = 6) rabbits had deteriorated to paraplegia by 48 hours after the operation. Histopathologic sections in the involved spinal cord segment showed that a significantly (P <.0001) greater number of motor neuron cells were preserved in the rabbits treated with insulin-like growth factor 1 (17.9 ± 4.8 per section) than in those treated with the control (8.0 ± 2.1). Although insulin was equipotent to insulin-like growth factor 1 in preserving the number of motor neuron cells (18.5 ± 2.7), the percentage of motor neuron cells positive for terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase–mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick-end labeling were significantly (P <.01) smaller in the rabbits treated with insulin-like growth factor 1 (6.0 ± 4.6) compared with those treated with the control (54.6 ± 33.8) and insulin (26.2 ± 11.7). Immunohistochemical studies revealed that insulin-like growth factor 1 increased expression of the antiapoptotic Bcl-xL protein and inhibited expression of the proapoptotic Bax protein in motor neuron cells 24 and 48 hours after the operation. In contrast, expression of only Bax was increased after the operation in other groups of rabbits subjected to spinal cord ischemia. Conclusions: These results suggest that insulin-like growth factor 1, but not insulin with a conventional dose, protects motor neuron cells from ischemic spinal cord injury associated with differential regulation of Bcl-xL and Bax protein.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2001;122:136-4

    High-Speed Tactile Sensing for Array-Type Tactile Sensor and Object Manipulation Based on Tactile Information

    We have developed a universal robot hand with tactile and other sensors. An array-type tactile sensor is crucial for dexterous manipulation of objects using a robotic hand, since this sensor can measure the pressure distribution on finger pads. The sensor has a very high resolution, and the shape of a grasped object can be classified by using this sensor. The more the number of measurement points provided, the higher the accuracy of the classification, but with a corresponding lengthening of the measurement cycle. In this paper, the problem of slow response time is resolved by using software for an array-type tactile sensor with high resolution that emulates the human sensor system. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through experiments

    Ghost D-branes

    We define a ghost D-brane in superstring theories as an object that cancels the effects of an ordinary D-brane. The supergroups U(N|M) and OSp(N|M) arise as gauge symmetries in the supersymmetric world-volume theory of D-branes and ghost D-branes. A system with a pair of D-brane and ghost D-brane located at the same location is physically equivalent to the closed string vacuum. When they are separated, the system becomes a new brane configuration. We generalize the type I/heterotic duality by including n ghost D9-branes on the type I side and by considering the heterotic string whose gauge group is OSp(32+2n|2n).     Features of and Mechanisms Underlying Insulitis In aly/aly Male Mice as an Animal Model of Autoimmune Pancreatitis: Activation of CD11c+, CD4+, and Th2 Cells and Predominant Destruction of β-cells

    Diabetes mellitus (DM) is observed in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). The development of DM in AIP is believed to be due to blood flow obstruction of the endocrine gland that accompanies pancreatitis, as well as injury to the islets caused by inflammation. The latter is called insulitis and the detailed mechanisms underlying its development are not yet clear. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the development of insulitis in AIP using aly mice as an animal model of AIP: results in aly/aly male mice, as the AIP group, were compared with those inaly/+ male mice as a control group. Mice in both groups were killed between 16 and 48 weeks of age, and pancreatitis and insulitis were evaluated histologically. Inflammatory and endocrine cells were evaluated by immunofluorescence staining with anti-CD4, anti-CD8, anti-CD11b, and anti-CD11c antibodies, as well as immunohistochemical analyses using insulin and glucagon antibodies. Plasma levels and the pancreatic content of interferon (IFN)-γ (as a Th1-secreted cytokine) and interleukin (IL)-4 (as a Th2-secreted cytokine) were determined. Pancreatitis was seen in aly/aly mice from 16 weeks of age and it developed gradually thereafter. Insulitis also developed gradually and was seen in mice after 24 weeks of age in association with a decrease in the number of islets. CD11c+ cells and CD4+ T cells were seen to infiltrate into the islets. Although the number of β-cells decreased with time, the number of α-cells was maintained until mice were 48 weeks of age. IFN-γ content peaked in mice at 16 weeks of age and declined rapidly from 20 weeks. There were two peaks in IL-4 content, one at 16 weeks and the other at 32 weeks, suggesting an association between IL-4 content and advanced insulitis after 32 weeks. In conclusion, the results suggest that insulitis in AIP is induced predominantly by the infiltration of CD11c+ cells and CD4+ T cells into the islets, and progression is facilitated by the imbalance of the activation of Th2 rather than Th1.
