Simplifying the Development, Use and Sustainability of HPC Software
Developing software to undertake complex, compute-intensive scientific
processes requires a challenging combination of both specialist domain
knowledge and software development skills to convert this knowledge into
efficient code. As computational platforms become increasingly heterogeneous
and newer types of platform such as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud
computing become more widely accepted for HPC computations, scientists require
more support from computer scientists and resource providers to develop
efficient code and make optimal use of the resources available to them. As part
of the libhpc stage 1 and 2 projects we are developing a framework to provide a
richer means of job specification and efficient execution of complex scientific
software on heterogeneous infrastructure. The use of such frameworks has
implications for the sustainability of scientific software. In this paper we
set out our developing understanding of these challenges based on work carried

The re-discovery of contemplation through science : with Tom McLeish, âThe Re-Discovery of Contemplation through Science: Boyle Lecture 2021â; Rowan Williams, âThe Re-Discovery of Contemplation through Science: A Response to Tom McLeishâ; Fraser Watts, âDiscussion of the Boyle Lecture 2021â; and Tom McLeish, âResponse to Boyle Lecture 2021 Panel and Participant Discussion.â
Some of the early-modern changes in the social framing of science, while often believed to be essential, are shown to be contingent. They contribute to the flawed public narrative around science today, and especially to the misconceptions around science and religion. Four are examined in detail, each of which contributes to the demise of the contemplative stance that science both requires and offers. They are: (1) a turn from an immersed subject to the pretense of a pure objectivity, (2) a turn from imagination as a legitimate pathway to knowledge, (3) a turn from shared and participative science to a restricted professionalism, and (4) an overprosaic reading of the metaphor of the âBook of Nature.â All four, but especially the imperative to consider reading nature as poetry, and a deeper examination of the entanglements between poetry and theoretical science, draw unavoidably on theological ideas, and contribute to a developing âtheology of science.â
The Science Performance of JWST as Characterized in Commissioning
This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb
Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period.
We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments,
and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch
expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of
achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the
board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases,
JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite
have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range
that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite

TextGrid, TEXTvre, and DARIAH: Sustainability of Infrastructures for Textual Scholarship
A variety of initiatives for developing virtual research environments, research infrastructures, and cyberinfrastructures have been funded in recent years. The systems produced vary considerably, but they all face the issue of sustainability, namely how to ensure the continued existence of a resource once the project that created it has finished. This paper addresses the sustainability issues faced by the TextGrid and TEXTvre virtual research environments for textual scholarship, examining the inter-project collaboration and cross-fertilization that took place, and investigating how the projects benefited from this exchange. It also examines how their sustainability is being facilitated by the more general-purpose DARIAH infrastructure, and conversely how their existing collaboration can serve as a model for future collaborations within the DARIAH community
