    Review of Factors Contributing to Nodular Goiter and Thyroid Carcinoma

    WOS: 000513157200001PubMed: 31542786There is an increased incidence of thyroid nodules and cancer. in this article, the reasons for this increase are evaluated and discussed. the factors causing increases in the incidence of nodules are the same as those causing increases in thyroid cancer. There are publications from all over the world regarding the rising incidence of thyroid cancer; it is especially associated with papillary cancer. the literature was reviewed and evaluated with regard to this significant phenomenon. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is the main mitotic factor. Any agent that elevates TSH will stimulate nodule formation. Therefore, the incidence of thyroid nodules is high in endemic goiter regions due to iodine deficiency. This paper has described many of the factors causing this higher incidence. of note, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are important factors associated with the increased incidence of nodular goiter and papillary thyroid cancer today. However, these data must be confirmed by other studies in the future

    Evaluation of Lower Urinary Tract Functions in Diabetic Patients

    WOS: 000461022400010Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of diabetes-related metabolic changes and chronic complications on lower urinary tract (LUT) functions. Materials and Methods: The study included 286 adult patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). All patients' demographic data, diabetes-specific history, laboratory and physical examination findings were recorded. All the data were compared with uroflowmetric parameters and the scores of questionnaires used for evaluation of LUT symptoms and functions. Results: In the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), average urinary flow rate (Q(ave)) International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) score and the Overactive Bladder-questionnaire Short Form (OAB-q SF) score were significantly affected. In the presence of stage 3 or over diabetic nephropathy (DN), ICIQ-SF score was significantly higher. Also, in elderly group,Q(ave) and OAB-q SF score were significantly affected. The Q(ave) was lower both in patients who underwent any surgery due to diabetic complications and in patients with DM-related diseases. Q(ave), and OAB-q SF score were significantly lower in males. Type 2 DM was associated with postvoid residual (PVR) increase and Q(ave) decrease. Poor glycemic control was associated with lower OAB-q SF score. Finally, vitamin D deficiency was found to be associated with an increase in PVR volume. Conclusion: The present study showed that DPN, stage 3 or over DN, aging, DM-related diseases and surgeries, male gender, type 2 DM, poor glycemic control and vitamin D deficiency cause a tendency to develop any kind of LUT dysfunction

    WOS: 000452210500006Obesity that has represented defense and warfare in the stone age and beauty, success, authority, and welfare in the middle ages, has now turned into a chronic and undesirable low-grade inflammatory disease that adversely affects the lifespan and quality of life. It results in serious complications such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer and is considered a pandemic all over the world. Chronic inflammation in obesity is attributed to an increase in the release of pro-inflammatory factors. This makes it a risk factor for many types of cancers, such as colon, gastric, breast, and prostate carcinomas, suggesting a cause and effect relationship between obesity and cancer. These pro-inflammatory factors act as signal transducers for tumor growth and progression. In recent years, animal studies have shown that adipocyte hypoxia can result in tumor growth in adipocytes and stromal vascular tissue. However, the mechanisms associated with obesity and cancer are still not completely understood. In the present study, we discussed the relationship between inflamed adipose tissue and cancer in obese patients, together with the contribution of interaction between hormones, cytokines, growth factors, and angiogenesis
