Tritium and helium behavior in irradiated beryllium
Large quantities of Be (> 100 metric tons) are planned for use in the ITER blanket design to enhance tritium breeding and to act as a thermal barrier between coolant and breeder. Tritium retention/release and He-induced swelling are important issues in blanket design. The data base on tritium and helium behavior in Be is reviewed. New data on tritium retention/release and He bubble growth are presented for Be irradiated to 5 {times} 10{sup 22} n(E > 1 MeV)/cm{sup 2} at {approximately}75{degree}C and postirradiation-annealed for 700 hours at 500{degree}C. A model (diffusion/desorption) is proposed and tested against the data base to determine tritium diffusivity and the desorption rate constant. Similarly a model for He-induced swelling is developed and tested against the data base. The dependence of tritium retention and release on He content and impurities (e.g. BeO) is also explored. 11 refs., 6 figs
Thermodynamic analysis of black hole solutions in gravitating nonlinear electrodynamics
We perform a general study of the thermodynamic properties of static
electrically charged black hole solutions of nonlinear electrodynamics
minimally coupled to gravitation in three space dimensions. The Lagrangian
densities governing the dynamics of these models in flat space are defined as
arbitrary functions of the gauge field invariants, constrained by some
requirements for physical admissibility. The exhaustive classification of these
theories in flat space, in terms of the behaviour of the Lagrangian densities
in vacuum and on the boundary of their domain of definition, defines twelve
families of admissible models. When these models are coupled to gravity, the
flat space classification leads to a complete characterization of the
associated sets of gravitating electrostatic spherically symmetric solutions by
their central and asymptotic behaviours. We focus on nine of these families,
which support asymptotically Schwarzschild-like black hole configurations, for
which the thermodynamic analysis is possible and pertinent. In this way, the
thermodynamic laws are extended to the sets of black hole solutions of these
families, for which the generic behaviours of the relevant state variables are
classified and thoroughly analyzed in terms of the aforementioned boundary
properties of the Lagrangians. Moreover, we find universal scaling laws (which
hold and are the same for all the black hole solutions of models belonging to
any of the nine families) running the thermodynamic variables with the electric
charge and the horizon radius. These scale transformations form a one-parameter
multiplicative group, leading to universal "renormalization group"-like
first-order differential equations. The beams of characteristics of these

Evaluation of sleep, puberty and mental health in children with long-term melatonin treatment for chronic idiopathic childhood sleep onset insomnia
OBJECTIVES: To establish whether long-term use of melatonin influences pubertal development, sleep quality and mental health development in children as compared with the normal Dutch population of the same age. METHODS: This follow-up research study was conducted in children included in a previous melatonin dose-finding trial. Outcomes were measured using questionnaires (Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and Tanner Stages) adopted for Dutch children. Mean duration of therapy, persistence of effect, adverse events and (other) reasons leading to cessation of therapy were additional objectives of this study. RESULTS: Mean years of usage (n = 51) was 3.1 years (min 1.0 year, max 4.6 years), mean dose 2.69 mg (min 0.3 mg, max 10 mg). Mean SDQ score, mean CSHQ score and Tanner Stages standard deviation scores did not differ in a statistically significant way from published scores of the general Dutch population of the same age and sex. CONCLUSIONS: This follow-up study demonstrates that melatonin treatment in children can be sustained over a long period of time without substantial deviation of the development of children with respect to sleep quality, puberty development and mental health scores, as compared with the general Dutch population
Solitary waves in the Nonlinear Dirac Equation
In the present work, we consider the existence, stability, and dynamics of
solitary waves in the nonlinear Dirac equation. We start by introducing the
Soler model of self-interacting spinors, and discuss its localized waveforms in
one, two, and three spatial dimensions and the equations they satisfy. We
present the associated explicit solutions in one dimension and numerically
obtain their analogues in higher dimensions. The stability is subsequently
discussed from a theoretical perspective and then complemented with numerical
computations. Finally, the dynamics of the solutions is explored and compared
to its non-relativistic analogue, which is the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger
equation. A few special topics are also explored, including the discrete
variant of the nonlinear Dirac equation and its solitary wave properties, as
well as the PT-symmetric variant of the model
Is Aquatic Life Correlated with an Increased Hematocrit in Snakes?
Background: Physiological adaptations that allow air-breathing vertebrates to remain underwater for long periods mainly involve modifications of the respiratory system, essentially through increased oxygen reserves. Physiological constraints on dive duration tend to be less critical for ectotherms than for endotherms because the former have lower mass-specific metabolic rates. Moreover, comparative studies between marine and terrestrial ectotherms have yet to show overall distinct physiological differences specifically associated with oxygen reserves. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used phylogenetically informed statistical models to test if habitat affects hematocrit (an indicator of blood oxygen stores) in snakes, a lineage that varies widely in habitat use. Our results indicate that both phylogenetic position (clade) and especially habitat are significant predictors of hematocrit. Our analysis also confirms the peculiar respiratory physiology of the marine Acrochordus granulatus. Conclusion/Significance: Contrary to previous findings, marine snakes have significantly–albeit slightly–elevated hematocrit, which should facilitate increased aerobic dive times. Genome-wide association study identifies the GLDC/IL33 locus associated with survival of osteosarcoma patients
Survival rates for osteosarcoma, the most common primary bone cancer, have changed little over the past three decades and are particularly low for patients with metastatic disease. We conducted a multi‐institutional genome‐wide association study (GWAS) to identify germline genetic variants associated with overall survival in 632 patients with osteosarcoma, including 523 patients of European ancestry and 109 from Brazil. We conducted a time‐to‐event analysis and estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using Cox proportional hazards models, with and without adjustment for metastatic disease. The results were combined across the European and Brazilian case sets using a random‐effects meta‐analysis. The strongest association after meta‐analysis was for rs3765555 at 9p24.1, which was inversely associated with overall survival (HR = 1.76; 95% CI 1.41–2.18, p = 4.84 × 10−7). After imputation across this region, the combined analysis identified two SNPs that reached genome‐wide significance. The strongest single association was with rs55933544 (HR = 1.9; 95% CI 1.5–2.4; p = 1.3 × 10−8), which localizes to the GLDC gene, adjacent to the IL33 gene and was consistent across both the European and Brazilian case sets. Using publicly available data, the risk allele was associated with lower expression of IL33 and low expression of IL33 was associated with poor survival in an independent set of patients with osteosarcoma. In conclusion, we have identified the GLDC/IL33 locus on chromosome 9p24.1 as associated with overall survival in patients with osteosarcoma. Further studies are needed to confirm this association and shed light on the biological underpinnings of this susceptibility locus
Investigation of three new mouse mammary tumor cell lines as models for transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and Neu pathway signaling studies: identification of a novel model for TGF-β-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition
INTRODUCTION: This report describes the isolation and characterization of three new murine mammary epithelial cell lines derived from mammary tumors from MMTV (mouse mammary tumor virus)/activated Neu + TβRII-AS (transforming growth factor [TGF]-β type II receptor antisense RNA) bigenic mice (BRI-JM01 and BRI-JM05 cell lines) and MMTV/activated Neu transgenic mice (BRI-JM04 cell line). METHODS: The BRI-JM01, BRI-JM04, and BRI-JM05 cell lines were analyzed for transgene expression, their general growth characteristics, and their sensitivities to several growth factors from the epidermal growth factor (EGF) and TGF-β families (recombinant human EGF, heregulin-β(1 )and TGF-β(1)). The BRI-JM01 cells were observed to undergo a striking morphologic change in response to TGF-β(1), and they were therefore further investigated for their ability to undergo a TGF-β-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) using motility assays and immunofluorescence microscopy. RESULTS: We found that two of the three cell lines (BRI-JM04 and BRI-JM05) express the Neu transgene, whereas, unexpectedly, both of the cell lines that were established from MMTV/activated Neu + TβRII-AS bigenic tumors (BRI-JM01 and BRI-JM05) do not express the TβRII-AS transgene. The cuboidal BRI-JM01 cells exhibit a short doubling time and are able to form confluent monolayers. The BRI-JM04 and BRI-JM05 cell lines are morphologically much less uniform, grow at a much slower rate, and do not form confluent monolayers. Only the BRI-JM05 cells can form colonies in soft agar. In contrast, all three cell lines form colonies in Matrigel, although the BRI-JM04 and BRI-JM05 cell lines do so more efficiently than the BRI-JM01 cell line. All three cell lines express the cell surface marker E-cadherin, confirming their epithelial character. Proliferation assays showed that the three cell lines respond differently to recombinant human EGF and heregulin-β(1), and that all are growth inhibited by TGF-β(1), but that only the BRI-JM01 cell line undergoes an EMT and exhibits increased motility upon TGF-β(1 )treatment. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the BRI-JM04 and BRI-JM05 cell lines can be used to investigate Neu oncogene driven mammary tumorigenesis, whereas the BRI-JM01 cell line will be useful for studying TGF-β(1)-induced EMT
A comparison of the Charlson comorbidity index derived from medical records and claims data from patients undergoing lung cancer surgery in Korea: a population-based investigation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Calculating the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) from medical records is a time-consuming and expensive process. The objectives of this study are to 1) measure agreement between medical record and claims data for CCI in lung cancer patients and 2) predict health outcomes of lung cancer patients based on CCIs from both data sources.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 392 patients who underwent surgery for pathologic stages I-III of lung cancer. The kappa value was used to measure the agreement between the 17 comorbidities of the CCI prevalence obtained from medical records and claims data. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationships between CCI and length of stay and reimbursement cost.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Out of 17 comorbidities identified in the Charlson comorbidity index, ten had a higher prevalence, four had a lower prevalence and three had a similar prevalence in claims data to those of medical records. The kappa values calculated from the two databases ranged from 0.093 to 0.473 for nine comorbidities. In predicting length of stay and reimbursement cost after surgical resection for lung cancer patients, the CCI scores derived from both the medical records and claims data were not statistically significant.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Poor agreement between medical record data and claims data may result from different motivations for collecting data. Further studies are needed to determine an appropriate method for predicting health outcomes based on these data sources.</p
