AN EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE OF A DOUBLE-LEG CIRCLE ON A POMMEL HORSE, AND A DESIRABLE PERFOMANCE PROPOSAL

    Get PDF
For the evaluation of the performance of a double-leg circle on a pommel horse, we focused on the relation between the horizontal rotation of a body about the vertical axis in the center of a pommel horse and the hip rotation about the longitudinal axis of a body. Several gymnasts having different levels of skill were examined by using a motion capture system. The analysis shows that the horizontal rotation and the hip rotation are in good synchronization for the performance of a well-trained gymnast

The changes in treatment strategies in ABOi living donor liver transplantation for acute liver failure

Introduction. Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) using ABO-incompatible (ABOi) graft for acute liver failure (ALF) is a developing treatment modality. Methods. We reviewed the changes in our treatment strategies in applying ABOi LDLT for FH over our fourteen years of experience. Results. Five patients with ALF received LDLT in adults using ABOi grafts, with different but gradually renewed protocols. The etiologies for acute liver failure included autoimmune hepatitis (n=3) and unknown (n=2). The desensitization protocol for ABOi barrier included Case #1 ; local infusion (portal vein)+plasma exchange (PE), Case #2 ; local infusion (hepatic artery)+rituximab+PE, Case #3 and #4 ; rituximab+PE, and Case #5 ; rituximab+PE under high-flow continuous hemodiafiltration. Local infusion was abandoned since Case #3, because Case #1 had portal vein thrombosis resulting in graft necrosis and Case #2 had hepatic artery dissection. The patients (Case #2 and #3), who received rituximab within 7 days before LDLT, experienced antibody-mediated rejection. Thus, the most recent protocol for ABOi-LDLT is that rituximab is given 2 weeks before LDLT, followed by high-flow continuous hemodiafiltration to obstacle hepatic encephalopathy until LDLT. The four patients except Case #1 are doing well with good graft function over 3.8±3.7 years. Conclusion. Rituximab-based ABOi-LDLT, most-recently under high-flow hemodiafiltration for treating encephalopathy, is a feasible option for applying LDLT for ALF

Japonų kalba, kaip „Velnio kalba“ – Esė apie lingvistinius prietarus

    No full text
The paper begins with a personal account of the author’s encounter, first, with a puzzling picture on Japan exhibited in the Basque Ethnological Museum in Bayonne, France in 1977 and second, with an article entitled ‘The Devil’s Tongue’ in the special issue on Japan of the magazine Time in 1982, followed by an account of the author’s own research into the origin of the strange idea of ‘Japanese as the Devil’s language’. (The idea was ‘strange’, because Japan traditionally had nothing to do with the Christian Archenemy.) The paper then presents the author’s findings and the first part of the paper is concluded by referring, above all, to an insidious political plot nicely cloaked in the whole idea of ‘the Devil’s language’. The second part of the paper discusses, from the point of view of cognitive linguistics, the latest development in language research, how we, as speakers of different human languages, can most reasonably come to terms with the diversity of human languages (allegedly the aftermath of the abortive attempt to construct the Tower of Babel) without going to the extremes of insisting exclusively either on universalism (as in transformational- generative grammar) or on relativism (as in structural linguistics).Straipsnis prasideda autorės prisiminimais pirmiausia apie Baskų Etnologiniame muziejuje Bayonne mieste, Prancūzijoje, 1977 m. pamatytą eksponuojamą gluminantį paveikslą apie Japoniją ir, antra, apie straipsnį, pavadintą „Velnio kalba“, išspausdintą „Time“ žurnale, specialiame leidinyje apie Japoniją 1982 m.

Some insights into the application of contemporary language theories to advanced English education: Analysing PASSIVISATION as an archetypal model from multiple linguistic viewpoints

The aim of the present symposium is earnestly to pursue the theme of the 51st convention, that is, the way to apply contemporary language theories to practices of teaching/learning in advanced English education. Thus in the symposium, each panelist respectively makes a brief explanation of the given common linguistic phenomenon, passives/passivisation, as an archetypal model from his/her own views: Dabrowska’s paper on user-based grammar from a cognitive vewpoint, Roberts’s paper on Universal Grammar and language shift, Ikegami’s paper on a contrastive/typological approach to passives, and Toyota’s paper on stylistic analysis of linguistics features. As an organizer as well as a discussant, Omori’s task is to organize all these suggestions into a digestible form that can enhance the linguistic knowledge of participants/readers, which would lead to construction of a firm foundation for teaching. We report a case of invasive bladder cancer after cyclophosphamide administration for nephrotic syndrome, and briefly discuss the association of bladder cancer and cyclophosphamide. A 6-year-old boy, who was diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome, was treated with oral administration of prednisolone and cyclophosphamide for 4 years, receiving a total dose of 49.5 g cyclophosphamide. At age 27, a gross hematuria with bloody clots appeared and he presented with postrenal renal failure. He underwent a radical cystourethrectomy and ileal conduit for stage a pT3a pN0 M0 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. He was not given any adjuvant treatments because of his renal insufficiency, and he died from the disease 14 months after radical surgery
