An Automated System for Epilepsy Detection using EEG Brain Signals based on Deep Learning Approach
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and for its detection, encephalography
(EEG) is a commonly used clinical approach. Manual inspection of EEG brain
signals is a time-consuming and laborious process, which puts heavy burden on
neurologists and affects their performance. Several automatic techniques have
been proposed using traditional approaches to assist neurologists in detecting
binary epilepsy scenarios e.g. seizure vs. non-seizure or normal vs. ictal.
These methods do not perform well when classifying ternary case e.g. ictal vs.
normal vs. inter-ictal; the maximum accuracy for this case by the
state-of-the-art-methods is 97+-1%. To overcome this problem, we propose a
system based on deep learning, which is an ensemble of pyramidal
one-dimensional convolutional neural network (P-1D-CNN) models. In a CNN model,
the bottleneck is the large number of learnable parameters. P-1D-CNN works on
the concept of refinement approach and it results in 60% fewer parameters
compared to traditional CNN models. Further to overcome the limitations of
small amount of data, we proposed augmentation schemes for learning P-1D-CNN
model. In almost all the cases concerning epilepsy detection, the proposed
system gives an accuracy of 99.1+-0.9% on the University of Bonn dataset.Comment: 18 page

Square Root Extended Kernel Recursive Least Squares Algorithm for Nonlinear Channel Equalization
Abstract: This study presents a square root version of extended kernel recursive least square algorithm. Basically main idea is to overcome the divergence phenomena arise in the computation of weights of the extended kernel recursive least squares algorithm. Numerically stable givens orthogonal transformations are used to obtain the next iteration of the algorithm. The usefulness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by discussing its application on the nonlinear multipath fading channel equalization based on Rayleigh distribution. Experiments are performed on slow fading Rayleigh channel with scattered signals
Misperception About Epilepsy Among Common Public in Balochistan
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Epilepsy is a treatable chronic neurological illness that is frequently associated with supernatural activity. The objectives of this study were to determine common myths and misperception about epilepsy by analysing a comprehensive panel of variables in our local population. Methods: We conducted a face-to-face questionnaire interview survey in three different shopping malls. One thousand people were randomly enrolled in this cross-sectional study at Quetta, Baluchistan, during the period of 21 august 2021 to 30 august 2021.
Results: A total of 1000 people were interviewed; among them 220(22%) were male and 780(78%) were female. Individuals between the age of 20 years and above were included in the study. Nine-hundred-eighty (98%) respondents had heard about epilepsy. Out of thousand people 419 (41.9%) thought that epilepsy was a brain disease, 488 (48.8%) responded that it was a ghost attack. Twenty-three (2.3%) believed it to be psychosis. The aspects of knowledge tested were on causes, types, and management of epilepsy. Forty-nine (4.9%) people believed that epilepsy was due to head trauma, 488 (48.8%) said it’s ghost attack, 67 (6.7%) said it’s because of evil eye, and 293 (29.3%) peoples believed that epilepsy was caused by black magic. Nine-hundred-twenty-eight (92.8%) people believed that home remedies such as sniffing shoes were effective in epilepsy.
Conclusion: This study revealed a lack of awareness about epilepsy in Balochistan, as well as the prevalence of both negative and favourable attitudes about epilepsy. This result was much surprising because in this era of modern medicine and technology, still superstitious beliefs prevail among large population. The study also emphasized to increase public awareness and epilepsy education initiatives to change public opinions and promote the use of standard epileptic treatment
Efficient PPA-SiO2-catalyzed synthesis of β-enaminones under solvent-free conditions
An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of β-enaminones under solvent-free reaction conditions using PPA-SiO2 as catalyst. The reaction yields were good to excellent (up to 90%). This methodology affords high selectivity and good tolerance of a variety of different functional groups present on both aromatic and aliphatic amines. In addition, the methodology is environmentally benign and cost-effective due to absence of solvent and easy work-up
An infrared, Raman, and X-ray database of battery interphase components
Further technological advancement of both lithium-ion and emerging battery
technologies can be catalyzed by an improved understanding of the chemistry and
working mechanisms of the solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) that form at
electrochemically active battery interfaces. However, collecting and
interpreting spectroscopy results of SEIs is difficult for several reasons,
including the chemically diverse composition of SEIs. To address this
challenge, we herein present a vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction
data library of ten suggested SEI chemical constituents relevant to both
lithium-ion and emerging battery chemistries. The data library includes
attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman
spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction data, collected in inert atmospheres
afforded by custom designed sample holders. The data library presented in this
work (and online repository) alleviates challenges with locating related work
that is either diffusely spread throughout the literature, or is non-existent,
and provides energy storage researchers streamlined access to vital
SEI-relevant data that can catalyse future battery research efforts.Comment: JML and RK jointly supervised this work. 26 pages, 8 figures, 8

Cytotoxicity, In vitro anti-Leishmanial and fingerprint HPLC- photodiode array analysis of the roots of Trillium govanianum.
Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don (Melanthiaceae alt. Trilliaceae), commonly known as 'nagchhatry' or 'teen patra', distributed from Pakistan to Bhutan about 2500-3800 m altitude is indigenous to Himalayas region. In folk medicine the plant has been reported for the treatment of wound healing, sepsis and in various sexual disorders. This paper reports, for the first time, to evaluate the cytotoxicity, in vitro anti-leishmanial (promastigotes) and fingerprint HPLC-photodiode array analysis of the MeOH extract of the roots of T. govanianum and its solid phase extraction fractions. Reverse phase HPLC-PDA based quantification revealed the presence of significant amount of quercetin, myrecetin and kaemferol ranging from 0.221to 0.528 μg/mg DW. MeOH extract revealed distinguishable protein kinase inhibitory activity against Streptomyces 85E strain with 18 mm bald phenotype. The remarkable toxicity profile against brine shrimps and leishmanial was manifested by MeOH extract with LC50 10 and 38.5 μg/mL, respectively
Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities and Phytochemical Analysis of Euphorbia wallichii Root Extract and its Fractions
Abstract Euphorbia wallichii a perennial herb growing mainly in Himalayas has been widely used in folk medicines for its medicinal properties. In the present study, the crude methanolic root extract (CME) and its fractions; n-Hexane Fraction (NHF), n-Butanol Fraction (NBF), Chloroform Fraction (CHF), Ethyl acetate Fraction (EAF) and Aqueous Fraction (AQF) of this plant specie were investigated for antioxidant and cytotoxic activities and phytochemical analysis. Antioxidant activity was determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH) and DNA protection assay performed on pBR322 plasmid DNA. In both these assays, promising results were obtained for CME as well as other fractions. The IC 50 values for DPPH assay were in a range of 7.89 to 63.35 µg/ml in which EAF showed the best antioxidant potential and almost all the tested samples showed certain level of DNA protection. The cytotoxic activity was assessed by using Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay on human cell lines; H157 (Lung Carcinoma) and HT144 (Malignant Melanoma). The IC 50 values of the tested samples ranged from 0.18 to 1.4 mg/mL against H157 cell line whereas against HT144 cell line the IC 50 values ranged from 0.46 to 17.88 mg/mL with NBF fraction showing maximum potential for both. Furthermore, the phytochemical analysis of CME and its fractions showed the presences of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoides and cardiac glycosides with varying concentrations
Design, synthesis and screening of indole acetic acid-based tri-azo moieties as antioxidants, anti-microbial and cytotoxic agents
Multidrug resistance and infectious disease have enormous spread despite drug discovery and development advancements. 1, 2, 4 -triazoles have been extensively studied, playing an imperative role in many pathologic conditions. A series of Schiff base triazoles; derived from Indole -3- acetic acid with substituted Benzaldehydes (5a-5g) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated through various Spectroanalytical techniques. SwissADME was used to assess physicochemical properties and pharmacokinetic drug-likeliness behavior. (5a-5g) were evaluated for their varied biological potential through antioxidant, antimicrobial, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxic evaluation. Schiff bases express drug-like nature as they follow Lipinski’s rule of five. 5b showed good antioxidant potential in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total reducing power (TRP) assays and was most active in the library in % free radical scavenging assay (%FRSA), showing 32% inhibition at 50 μg/mL concentration. Compounds showed antibacterial activity against various tested strains. 5e and 5f showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 3.12 μg/mL for P.aeruginosa and K.pneumoniae, respectively. In the antifungal assay, only 5e inhibited one strain with a zone of inhibition >6 mm. These synthetic molecules possess good cytotoxic potential in the Brine Shrimp Lethality screening; 5c, 5d, and 5f exhibited LC50 =5.7 μg/mL. In the protein kinase inhibition assay, 5a, 5b, and 5g demonstrated inhibitory potential, showcasing the zone of inhibition as 7.5–10.5 mm for the bald one and 6–7.5 for the clear zone. These findings suggest that the compounds have antibacterial and cytotoxic potential, and there is a chance for further research and development in this area
