    Sparticle Spectrum Constraints

    The supersymmetric standard model with supergravity-inspired soft breaking terms predicts a rich pectrum of sparticles to be discovered at the SSC, LHC and NLC. Because there are more supersymmetric particles than unknown parameters, one can write down sum rules relating their masses. We discuss the pectrum of sparticles from this point of view. Some of the sum rules do not depend on the input parameters and can be used to test the consistency of the model, while others are useful in determining the input parameters of the theory. If supersymmetry is discovered but the sum rules turn out to be violated, it will be evidence of new physics beyond the minimal supersymmetric standard model with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking terms.Comment: 25 pages.     Extended Ensemble Monte Carlo

    ``Extended Ensemble Monte Carlo''is a generic term that indicates a set of algorithms which are now popular in a variety of fields in physics and statistical information processing. Exchange Monte Carlo (Metropolis-Coupled Chain, Parallel Tempering), Simulated Tempering (Expanded Ensemble Monte Carlo), and Multicanonical Monte Carlo (Adaptive Umbrella Sampling) are typical members of this family. Here we give a cross-disciplinary survey of these algorithms with special emphasis on the great flexibility of the underlying idea. In Sec.2, we discuss the background of Extended Ensemble Monte Carlo. In Sec.3, 4 and 5, three types of the algorithms, i.e., Exchange Monte Carlo, Simulated Tempering, Multicanonical Monte Carlo are introduced. In Sec.6, we give an introduction to Replica Monte Carlo algorithm by Swendsen and Wang. Strategies for the construction of special-purpose extended ensembles are discussed in Sec.7. We stress that an extension is not necessary restricted to the space of energy or temperature. Even unphysical (unrealizable) configurations can be included in the ensemble, if the resultant fast mixing of the Markov chain offsets the increasing cost of the sampling procedure. Multivariate (multi-component) extensions are also useful in many examples. In Sec.8, we give a survey on extended ensembles with a state space whose dimensionality is dynamically varying.     GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS OF NEWLY ISOLATED INDONESIAN MICROALGAE UNDER DIFFERENT SALINITY

    The aim of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of microalgae strains isolated from Kendari Bay and the Wanggu River estuary, Indonesia. The growth of the isolates, denoted as Kb1-2, Kb1-3, Kb1-5, and Kb2-6, were evaluated under controlled conditions. A batch culture experiment of these strains except Kb2-6 was conducted for 15 days under salinity levels of 20, 25, 30 and 35 gL-1. Tetraselmis chui, Tisochrysis lutea and Chaetocero sneogracile were also culture and used as the growth references. Cell density was measured every day and cell size was measured from 50 live cells during the logarithmic phase. The cell sizes of three of the four Indonesian microalgae ranged from 1.2-11.8 µm, considered suitable for shrimp larvae. The Indonesian strains started the logarithmic phase of growth at all salinities tested from day 0 to day 3 after inoculation except for Kb1-3 that started the phase after a 3-day lag. Increased cell density over the culture period and division rate of Indonesian microalgae during the logarithmic phase of growth were similar at all salinities tested and similar to T. chui, Ti. lutea and C. neogracile. However, the final biomasses after 15 days of culture of all microalgal strains were affected by culture salinities tested. Indonesian microalgal strains showed similar dry weight and ash free dry weight to smaller-cell strains, Ti. lutea and C. neogracile. Indonesian strains (other than Kb2-6) are suggested as suitable live food candidates for mass culture in shrimp hatcheries based on their cell size, ability to survive long culture periods, and wide salinity tolerance

    Ethnic differences in thromboprophylaxis for COVID-19 patients: should they be considered?

    © 2021, Japanese Society of Hematology. Thromboembolic events contribute to morbidity and mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As a result, thromboprophylaxis using low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is universally recommended for hospitalized patients based on multiple guidelines. However, ethnic differences with respect to thrombogenicity have been reported and the incidence of thromboembolic events is considered to be lower in the Asian population. Despite the importance of thromboprophylaxis, bleeding is also a side effect that should be considered. We examine the data relating to potential ethnic differences in thrombosis and bleeding in COVID-19. Although sufficient data is not yet available, current evidence does not oppose routine anticoagulant use and thromboprophylaxis using a standard dose of LMWH for admitted patients regardless of ethnicity based on our review

    Simulation of Lattice Polymers with Multi-Self-Overlap Ensemble

    A novel family of dynamical Monte Carlo algorithms for lattice polymers is proposed. Our central idea is to simulate an extended ensemble in which the self-avoiding condition is systematically weakened. The degree of the self-overlap is controlled in a similar manner as the multicanonical ensemble. As a consequence, the ensemble --the multi-self-overlap ensemble-- contains adequate portions of self-overlapping conformations as well as higher energy ones. It is shown that the multi-self-overlap ensemble algorithm reproduce correctly the canonical averages at finite temperatures of the HP model of lattice proteins. Moreover, it outperforms massively a standard multicanonical algorithm for a difficult example of a polymer with 8-stickers.     A high-throughput approach developing lithium-niobium-tantalum oxides as electrolyte/cathode interlayers for high-voltage all-solid-state lithium batteries

    The ever-increasing interest in sustainable mobility is driving the development of innovative batteries with increased energy densities relative to currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries. All-solid-state batteries using 5 V-class positive electrodes are one of those batteries due to their larger volumetric energy density and their superior durability. However, their power density tends to be limited by the large charge transfer resistance at their electrolyte/5 V-electrode interfaces; one explanation for this is the development of significant Li+ deficient layers at the interface. Here we propose a new interlayer material that would effectively resolve the Li+ deficient layers. The partially-crystallized Li56Nb22Ta22 oxide was identified using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) based high-throughput physical vapor deposition (HT-PVD) approach. Its higher ionic conductivity of 4.2 ?S cm?1 and higher permittivity of 165 when measured at 254 kHz, relative to those of conventional LiNbO3 interlayer (1.8 ?S cm?1 and 95, respectively) will be effective for fast charge transfer reactions at the electrolyte /cathode interfaces in 5 V-class all-solid-state batteries

    Prospects for Supersymmetry at LEP2

    Working within the framework of the minimal supergravity model with gauge coupling unification and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking (SUGRA), we map out regions of parameter space explorable by experiments at LEP2, for center of mass energy options of s=150, 175\sqrt{s}=150,\ 175, 190190 and 205 GeV. We compute signals from all accessible 2→22 \rightarrow 2 SUSY pair production processes using the ISAJET simulation program, and devise cuts that enhance the signal relative to Standard Model backgrounds, and which also serve to differentiate various supersymmetric processes from one another. We delineate regions of SUGRA parameter space where production of neutralino pairs, chargino pairs, slepton pairs and the production of the light Higgs scalar of SUSY is detectable above Standard Model backgrounds and distinguishable from other SUSY processes. In addition, we find small regions of SUGRA parameter space where \te\te, \tz_2\tz_2 and \tnu_L\tnu_L production yields spectacular events with up to four isolated leptons. The combined regions of parameter space explorable by LEP2 are compared with the reach of Tevatron Main Injector era experiments.
