Some Remarks on Some Neoplatonic Discussions of Some Mathematical Concepts

    Get PDF
Despite their reverence for Plato, the Neoplatonists tended to associate mathematics very closely with the sensible. I here discuss two issues frequently raised in Neoplatonic discussions of the category of quantity. Both concern disputes about the relation of priority between two concepts, in one case quantity and quality, in the other the discrete and continuous

Building a quantum superposition of conscious states with integrated information theory

Could there be a quantum superposition of consciousness, as in the Wigner's friend thought experiment? The integrated information theory (IIT) of consciousness has turned this into a well-defined question. According to IIT, consciousness is a measurable physical quantity given by integrated information (Φ\Phi), such that the amount of consciousness in a system corresponds to its amount of Φ\Phi. We use the most recent IIT formalism (IIT4.0) to analyze the simplest non-zero Φ\Phi system known as a feedback dyad. We then propose a circuit that puts the dyad into a superposition of states which, according to IIT, would correspond to a superposition of conscious states. We refer to this as "Schr\"odinger's dyad". We therefore show that either IIT is false or the simple dyad is conscious and can easily be put into a superposition of conscious states. We then identify the simplest possible consciousness-collapse model, which predicts that this superposition is unstable and collapses at a rate determined by a measure of difference between the superposed conscious states. Our analysis will enable us to make a number of key observations about the general structure of integrated information theory (IIT2.0, IIT3.0, IIT4.0, and QIIT) and the general structure of consciousness-collapse models

Retrospective Analysis of Post-Operative Sepsis Rates, Stone Composition, and Ureteral Stent Duration after Ureteroscopy and Laser Lithotripsy During COVID-19

Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy is routinely used to remove stones but results in manipulation of the genitourinary mucosa and has a well-established relationship with post-operative sepsis under certain conditions. Postoperative sepsis represents a significant morbidity and mortality cost to patients and the healthcare system. Several studies to determine risk factors for sepsis after ureteroscopy have been completed. Such risk factors include positive preoperative urine cultures, female gender, prolonged preoperative stent time \u3e 1 month, and patients with sepsis at the time of initial stenting. To improve sepsis rates, procedural alterations such as the use of disposable ureteroscopes have been introduced, as there is some evidence that there may be residual bacteria on reusable ureteroscopes after sterilization. It is unclear how much this contributes to postoperative sepsis, as it may be an inflammatory response rather than true bacteremia. Stone type may also be associated with bacteriuria as certain stones, such as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) stones, form only in the presence of urease-producing bacteria such as Proteus, E. coli, and Enterococcus. However, this has been challenged with recent percutaneous nephrolithotomy studies suggesting that struvite stones are created during infections but could potentially be sterilized, while carbonate apatite stones retain imprints of bacteria. This investigation reviews if there were significant differences over the last three years in mean ureteral stent time, stone composition, or post-operative sepsis rates in patients who underwent ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, as well as if the COVID-19 pandemic had any significant impact on this data. Data has been shown that urological procedures has taken drastic decrease in number due to COVID-19 as elective cases were cancelled

The Uses of Argument in Mathematics

Stephen Toulmin once observed that `it has never been customary for philosophers to pay much attention to the rhetoric of mathematical debate'. Might the application of Toulmin's layout of arguments to mathematics remedy this oversight? Toulmin's critics fault the layout as requiring so much abstraction as to permit incompatible reconstructions. Mathematical proofs may indeed be represented by fundamentally distinct layouts. However, cases of genuine conflict characteristically reflect an underlying disagreement about the nature of the proof in question.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Taking Blockchain Seriously

    Get PDF
In the present techno-political moment it is clear that ignoring or dismissing the hype surrounding blockchain is unwise, and certainly for regulatory authorities and governments who must keep a grip on the technology and those promoting it, in order to ensure democratic accountability and regulatory legitimacy within the blockchain ecosystem and beyond. Blockchain is telling (and showing) us something very important about the evolution of capital and neoliberal economic reason, and the likely impact in the near future on forms and patterns of work, social organization, and, crucially, on communities and individuals who lack influence over the technologies and data that increasingly shape and control their lives. In this short essay I introduce some of the problems in the regulation of blockchain and offer counter-narratives aimed at cutting through the hype fuelling the ascendency of this most contemporary of technologies

Evaluation of the relative contribution of meteorological and oceanic forces to the drift of ice islands offshore Newfoundland

On 29 April 2015, four beacons were deployed onto an ice island in the Strait of Belle Isle to record positional data. The ice island later broke up into many fragments, four of which were tracked by the beacons. The relative influences of wind drag, current drag, Coriolis force, sea surface height gradient and sea-ice force on the drift of the tracked ice island fragments were analyzed. Using atmospheric and oceanic model outputs, the sea-ice force was calculated as the residual of the fragments' net forces and the sum of all other forces. This was compared against the force obtained through ice concentration-dependent relationships when sea ice was present. The sea-ice forces calculated from the residual approach and concentration-dependent relationships were significant only when sea ice was present at medium-high concentrations in the vicinity of the ice island fragments. The forces from ocean currents and sea surface tilt contributed the most to the drift of the

MicroRNAs and Their Impact on Radiotherapy for Cancer

Published version made available in accordance with publisher copyright policy.Resistance to radiation is considered to be an important reason for local failure after radiotherapy and tumor recurrence. However, the exact mechanisms of tumor resistance remain poorly understood. Current investigations of microRNAs as potential diagnostic and therapeutic tools for cancer treatment have shown promising results. With respect to radiotherapy resistance and response, there is now emerging evidence that microRNAs modulate key cellular pathways that mediate response to radiation. These data suggest that microRNAs might have significant potential as targets for the development of new therapeutic strategies to overcome radioresistance in cancer. This review summarizes the current literature pertinent to the influence of microRNAs in the response to radiotherapy for cancer treatment, with an emphasis on microRNAs as novel diagnostic and prognostic markers, as well as their potential to alter radiosensitivity
