Phonon downconversion to suppress correlated errors in superconducting qubits
Quantum error correction can preserve quantum information in the presence of
local errors, but correlated errors are fatal. For superconducting qubits,
high-energy particle impacts from background radioactivity produce energetic
phonons that travel throughout the substrate and create excitations above the
superconducting ground state, known as quasiparticles, which can poison all
qubits on the chip. We use normal metal reservoirs on the chip back side to
downconvert phonons to low energies where they can no longer poison qubits. We
introduce a pump-probe scheme involving controlled injection of pair-breaking
phonons into the qubit chips. We examine quasiparticle poisoning on chips with
and without back-side metallization and demonstrate a reduction in the flux of
pair-breaking phonons by over a factor of 20. We use a Ramsey interferometer
scheme to simultaneously monitor quasiparticle parity on three qubits for each
chip and observe a two-order of magnitude reduction in correlated poisoning due

Chemical variability of artificial stone powders in relation to their health effects
The occurrence of highly severe silica-related diseases among the resin- and silica-based artificial stone workers was claimed, associated to an extremely short latency. High levels of exposure and intrinsic properties of AS are thought to modulate the development of silicosis and auto-immune diseases. This study compares parent materials and processed dusts, to shed light on changes of AS occurring in the manufacturing process, through an XRF, EPR and XAS investigation. We point out the extremely wide variability of the materials, the occurrence of chemical signatures impressed by the processing techniques, and the unprecedented generation of stable radicals associated to the lysis of the Si-O chemical bond inside the resin coated respirable crystalline silica. These results suggest that the AS processing in industrial stone workshops can create respirable dusts with peculiar physical and chemical properties, to be correlated to the observed clinical evidences

Viene segnalata una serie di casi di tumori maligni del naso e dei seni accessori osservata tra lavoratori calzaturieri (11 casi) e nel settore conciario (8 casi) del comprensorio del cuoio in Toscana nel periodo 1990-2002. Si rafforza l'ipotesi che i tannini possano svolgere un ruolo eziologico per questo tipo di neoplasia sia nell'industria delle pelli sia in quella del legno
Physiological and performance effects of generic versus specific aerobic training in soccer players
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of specific (small-sided games) vs. generic (running) aerobic interval training on physical fitness and objective measures of match performance in soccer. Forty junior players were randomly assigned to either generic (n=20) or specific (n=20) interval training consisting of 4 bouts of 4 min at 90-95 % of maximum heart rate with 3 min active rest periods, completed twice a week. The following outcomes were measured at baseline (Pre), after 4 weeks of pre-season training (Mid), and after a further 8 weeks of training during the regular season (Post): maximum oxygen uptake, lactate threshold (Tlac), running economy at Tlac, a soccer-specific endurance test (Ekblom's circuit), and indices of physical performance during soccer matches (total distance and time spent standing, walking, and at low- and high-intensity running speed). Training load, as quantified by heart rate and rating of perceived exertion, was recorded during all training sessions and was similar between groups. There were significant improvements in aerobic fitness and match performance in both groups of soccer players, especially in response to the first 4 weeks of pre-season training. However, no significant differences between specific and generic aerobic interval training were found in any of the measured variables including soccer specific tests. The results of this study showed that both small-sided games and running are equally effective modes of aerobic interval training in junior soccer players
