MeerKAT HI line observations of the nearby interacting galaxy pair NGC 1512/1510
We present MeerKAT HI line observations of the nearby interacting galaxy pair
NGC 1512/1510. The MeerKAT data yield high-fidelity image sets characterised by
an excellent combination of high angular resolution (~20") and and sensitivity
(~0.08 Msun/pc^2), thereby offering the most detailed view of this well-studied
system's neutral atomic hydrogen content, especially the HI co-located with the
optical components of the galaxies. The stellar bulge and bar of NGC 1512 are
located within a central HI depression where surface densities fall below 1
Msun/pc^2, while the galaxy's starburst ring coincides with a well-defined HI
annulus delimited by a surface density of 3 Msun/pc^2. In stark contrast, the
star-bursting companion, NGC 1510, has its young stellar population precisely
matched to the highest HI over-densities we measure (~12.5 Msun/pc^2). The
improved quality of the MeerKAT data warrants the first detailed measurements
of the lengths and masses of the system's tidally-induced HI arms. We measure
the longest of the two prominent HI arms to extend over ~27 kpc and to contain
more than 30% of the system's total HI mass. We quantitatively explore the
spatial correlation between HI and far-ultraviolet flux over a large range of
HI mass surface densities spanning the outer disk. The results indicate the
system's HI content to play an important role in setting the pre-conditions
required for wide-spread, high-mass star formation. This work serves as a
demonstration of the remarkable efficiency and accuracy with which MeerKAT can

Theory of Unconventional Spin Density Wave: A Possible Mechanism of the Micromagnetism in U-based Heavy Fermion Compounds
We propose a novel spin density wave (SDW) state as a possible mechanism of
the anomalous antiferromagnetism, so-called the micromagnetism, in URu_2Si_2
below 17.5[K]. In this new SDW, the electron-hole pair amplitude changes its
sign in the momentum space as in the case of the unconventional
superconductivity. It is shown that this state can be realized in an extended
Hubbard model within the mean field theory. We also examine some characteristic
properties of this SDW to compare with the experimental results. All these
properties well explain the unsolved problem of the micromagnetism.Comment: REVTeX v3.1, 4 pages, 5 figure
The Liberal Playground: Susan Isaacs, Psychoanalysis and Progressive Education in the Interwar Era
The Cambridge Malting House, an experimental school, serves here as a case study for investigating the tensions within 1920s liberal elites between their desire to abandon some Victorian and Edwardian sets of values in favour of more democratic ones, and at the same time their insistence on preserving themselves as an integral part of the English upper class. Susan Isaacs, the manager of the Malting House, provided the parents â some of whom were the most famous scientists and intellectuals of their age â with an opportunity to fulfil their âfantasyâ of bringing up children in total freedom. In retrospect, however, she deeply criticized those from their milieu for not fully understanding the real socio-cultural implications of their ideological decision to make independence and freedom the core values in their childrenâs education. Thus, 1920s progressive education is a paradigmatic case study of the cultural and ideological inner contradictions within liberal thought in the interwar era. The article also shows how psychoanalysis â which attracted many progressive educators â played a crucial role in providing liberals of all sorts with a new language to articulate their political visions, but, at the same time, explored the limits of the liberal discourse as a whole
Momentum-Resolved Charge Excitations in a Prototype One Dimensional Mott Insulator
We report momentum resolved charge excitations in a one dimensional (1-D)
Mott insulator studied using high resolution (~ 325 meV) inelastic x-ray
scattering over the entire Brillouin zone for the first time. Excitations at
the insulating gap edge are found to be highly dispersive (momentum
dependent)compared to excitations observed in two dimensional Mott insulators.
The observed dispersion in 1-D is consistent with charge excitations involving
holons which is unique to spin-1/2 quantum chain systems. These results point
to the potential utility of inelastic x-ray scattering in providing valuable
information about electronic structure of strongly correlated insulators.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Revised with minor change
Inflection point in the magnetic field dependence of the ordered moment of URu2Si2 observed by neutron scattering in fields up to 17 T
We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the ordered
antiferromagnetic moment and the magnetic excitations in the heavy-fermion
superconductor URu2Si2 for fields up to 17 Tesla applied along the tetragonal c
axis, using neutron scattering. The decrease of the magnetic intensity of the
tiny moment with increasing field does not follow a simple power law, but shows
a clear inflection point, indicating that the moment disappears first at the
metamagnetic transition at ~40 T. This suggests that the moment m is connected
to a hidden order parameter Phi which belongs to the same irreducible
representation breaking time-reversal symmetry. The magnetic excitation gap at
the antiferromagnetic zone center Q=(1,0,0) increases continuously with
increasing field, while that at Q=(1.4,0,0) is nearly constant. This field
dependence is opposite to that of the gap extracted from specific-heat data.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
What does touch tell us about emotions in touchscreen-based gameplay?

Not for redistribution.Nowadays, more and more people play games on touch-screen mobile phones. This phenomenon raises a very interesting question: does touch behaviour reflect the playerâs emotional state? If possible, this would not only be a valuable evaluation indicator for game designers, but also for real-time personalization of the game experience. Psychology studies on acted touch behaviour show the existence of discriminative affective profiles. In this paper, finger-stroke features during gameplay on an iPod were extracted and their discriminative power analysed. Based on touch-behaviour, machine learning algorithms were used to build systems for automatically discriminating between four emotional states (Excited, Relaxed, Frustrated, Bored), two levels of arousal and two levels of valence. The results were very interesting reaching between 69% and 77% of correct discrimination between the four emotional states. Higher results (~89%) were obtained for discriminating between two levels of arousal and two levels of valence
Antiferromagnetism and Its Relation to the Superconducting Phases of UPt3
Using magnetic x-ray and neutron diffraction in UPt3, we find that a suppression of the antiferromagnetic scattering intensity in the superconducting phase is due to a reduction in the magnitude of the staggered moment with no change in symmetry. The existence of the suppression as well as the magnetic correlation lengths are not affected by the presence or absence of a visible splitting in the superconducting transition. The simplest models wherein antiferromagnetic order provides the symmetry-breaking field for the splitting do not provide a compete explanation of our results
Dynamical density-density correlations in one-dimensional Mott insulators
The dynamical density-density correlation function is calculated for the
one-dimensional, half-filled Hubbard model extended with nearest neighbor
repulsion using the Lanczos algorithm for finite size systems and analytically
for large on site repulsion compared to hopping amplitudes. At the zone
boundary an excitonic feature exists for any finite nearest neighbor repulsion
and exhausts most of the spectral weight, even for parameters where no exciton
