An analysis of correlation scores of factors which contribute to success in the study of algebra
For many years students have been placed in algebra and mathematics courses in the junior high schools of Santa Rosa on the basis of teacher judgment. intelligence test scores, achievement test scores, and prognostic test scores. Counselors have placed these students in the courses on the basis of their judgment of the above factors. Very little experimental evidence has been presented to weigh the relative importance of the factors which are of prime consideration in the placement of pupils
Bank capital structure, regulatory capital, and securities innovations
Although financial instruments that, in effect, permit corporations to treat preferred stock dividends as tax-deductible interest have been used by nonfinancial corporations since late 1993, bank holding companies (BHCs) did not issue these trust-preferred securities (TPS) until 1996, when the Federal Reserve qualified them as Tier-1 capital. We delineate and test hypotheses with 1) analyses of the stock-market reaction to the Fed’s ruling and to TPS filings and 2) comparisons of BHCs that issued TPS with those that did not. We conclude that regulatory capital requirements, tax savings, and uninsured sources of funds can have significant positive effects on BHCs’ demand for capital; growth and investment opportunities have an inconclusive effect; and transaction costs have a negative effect. Our results are not consistent with the moral-hazard hypothesis.Bank capital ; Bank holding companies ; Bank supervision ; Securities

Acquisition and Retention of Skilled Employees for Industries in Giles County, Tennessee
The U.S. manufacturing industry produces products that ship all over the world. Because of the shortage of skilled labor, some manufacturing human resource professionals lack the strategies and processes necessary to acquire and retain skilled employees. Guided by Maslow\u27s hierarchy of needs theory and Herzberg\u27s motivation-hygiene theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore the strategies and processes that manufacturing human resource professionals use to acquire and retain skilled employees. Data were gathered from a population of manufacturing human resource professionals in Giles County, Tennessee from individual interviews; focus group; and participants\u27 internal documents, public documents, and websites. Transcribed interview data and focus group data, along triangulated data from other gathered documents, were inductively coded following Yin\u27s approach to analysis. Six themes emerged as key strategies to acquire and retain skilled employees: company culture, succession, benefits, finding new employees, incentives, and employee attraction and retention. These findings may contribute to improving business practices in manufacturing industries or human resource management. The implications for positive social change include the potential for the community to become more attractive for other industries and improve the quality of life for individuals who reside in the community

The effect of surface gas injection on film boiling heat transfer
A database was developed for heat transfer from a horizontal plate with both film boiling and gas jetting occurring simultaneously, in a pool of water maintained at its saturation temperature. The effect of passing nitrogen through established film boiling is to increase the heat transfer from that surface. At the highest superficial gas velocity measured, approximately 8.5 cm/s, and for a constant surface temperature, the heat transfer increases by a factor of two over the heat transfer with no enhancement by gas flux. Further, as the superficial gas velocity approached zero, the data approach the stable film boiling asymptote. A semi-empirical model was developed and correlated to the database. The result is an equation which represents better than 90% of all the measured data within {plus_minus}15% bounds
Atomic and Molecular Opacities for Brown Dwarf and Giant Planet Atmospheres
We present a comprehensive description of the theory and practice of opacity
calculations from the infrared to the ultraviolet needed to generate models of
the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Methods for using
existing line lists and spectroscopic databases in disparate formats are
presented and plots of the resulting absorptive opacities versus wavelength for
the most important molecules and atoms at representative temperature/pressure
points are provided. Electronic, ro-vibrational, bound-free, bound-bound,
free-free, and collision-induced transitions and monochromatic opacities are
derived, discussed, and analyzed. The species addressed include the alkali
metals, iron, heavy metal oxides, metal hydrides, , , , ,
, , , and representative grains. [Abridged]Comment: 28 pages of text, plus 22 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical
