Da Califórnia a São Paulo é um estudo da casa paulista moderna, situando-a em relação à arquitetura norte-americana, especialmente a que teve origem na Costa Oeste. A conexão entre os projetos de São Paulo e as inovações surgidas na Califórnia, propagadas pelo mundo afora ao fim da Segunda Guerra, é uma vertente ainda não abordada. Ela pode ajudar a reconhecer os princípios que estimularam certas modificações na tipologia da casa paulista. No estudo da relação entre a casa moderna paulista e a americana convergem três referências simultâneas. Além da Califórnia, com seu programa das Case Study Houses, é preciso considerar a obra de Marcel Breuer, na Costa Leste, e a Escola de Sarasota, na Florida, representada por Paul Rudolph e Ralph Twitchell. A casa torna-se o centro das atenções nos Estados Unidos do Segundo Pós-guerra. Em São Paulo, cidade aberta às diversas tendências internacionais, o exemplo americano é acompanhado com atenção. A modernização torna-se sinônimo de americanização.From California to São Paulo is an investigation about the modern Paulist house, comparing it to North American architecture, specially that from the West Coast. A connection between São Paulo projects and the innovations coming from California and spreading abroad at the end of the 2nd World War, is an aspect that has not yet been investigated. It can help to recognize the reasons that encouraged certain modifications in the typology of Paulist houses. In studying the relationship between the modern Paulist house and the American one, three simultaneous references can be found. Besides California - with its Case Study Houses Program it is necessary to consider Marcel Breuers work in the East coast and Sarasota School in Florida, represented by Paul Rudolph and Ralph Twitchell. the house becomes the center of attention in Post War United States. In São Paulo, a city open to different international tendencies, the American example is observed with attention. Modernization becomes synonymous with Americanization

Frank Lloyd Wright and Brazil

A historiografia contribuiu para a consolidação de uma narrativa que fez da linha corbusieriana o sinônimo de arquitetura brasileira. Essa opção minimizou o valor dos fatos que não se enquadravam dentro da corrente predominante. Este trabalho resgata um desses aspectos: a conexão entre Frank Lloyd Wright e a arquitetura moderna brasileira. Enfoca três aspectos do vínculo entre Wright e o Brasil. Presença trata da visita que Wright realizou ao Rio de Janeiro em 1931, examinando os pormenores da viagem e sua repercussão, assim como as possíveis conseqüências de sua passagem pelo país. Polêmica revisita as controvérsias que acompanharam a trajetória de Wright e seus reflexos no Brasil, desde o debate em torno do conceito de abstração até a rivalidade entre racionalismo e organicismo que sobreveio à publicação das teorias de Bruno Zevi em fins da Segunda Guerra. Finalmente, Legado aprofundo a relação entre a obra de Frank Lloyd Wright e a arquitetura de São Paulo. A atenção está centrada no período 1937/1946 da obra de João Batista Vilanova Artigas e inclui sua permanência nos Estados Unidos, para onde viajou com uma bolsa de estudos da Fundação Guggenheim .Historiography has contributed to the consolidation of a narrative that has made the corbusierian way a synonym of Brazilian architecture. Presença is concerned with the visit Wright has made to Rio de Janeiro in 1931, discussing details and repercussions of his travel, and the possible consequences of his stay in the country. Polêmica reviews the controversies Which will follow Wright\'s pathway and its echoes in Brazil as well, from the debate about the concept of abstraction until the rivalry between rationalism and organicism that happened after the publication of Bruno Zevi\'s theories in the end of World War II.
