    Topological Test Spaces

    A test space is the set of outcome-sets associated with a collection of experiments. This notion provides a simple mathematical framework for the study of probabilistic theories -- notably, quantum mechanics -- in which one is faced with incommensurable random quantities. In the case of quantum mechanics, the relevant test space, the set of orthonormal bases of a Hilbert space, carries significant topological structure. This paper inaugurates a general study of topological test spaces. Among other things, we show that any topological test space with a compact space of outcomes is of finite rank. We also generalize results of Meyer and Clifton-Kent by showing that, under very weak assumptions, any second-countable topological test space contains a dense semi-classical test space.Comment: 12 pp., LaTeX 2e.     Plasma Cross-Gestational Sphingolipidomic Analyses Reveal Potential First Trimester Biomarkers of Preeclampsia

    Introduction Preeclampsia (PE) is a gestational disorder, manifested in the second half of pregnancy by maternal hypertension, proteinuria and generalized edema. PE is a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, accounting for nearly 40% of all premature births worldwide. Bioactive sphingolipids are emerging as key molecules involved in etiopathogenesis of PE, characterized by maternal angiogenic imbalance and symptoms of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to compare the cross-gestational profile of circulating bioactive sphingolipids in maternal plasma from preeclamptic (PE) versus normotensive control (CTL) subjects with the goal of identifying sphingolipids as candidate first trimester biomarkers of PE for early prediction of the disease. Methods A prospective cohort of patients was sampled at the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy for each patient (11–14, 22–24, and 32–36 weeks´ gestation). A retrospective stratified study design was used to quantify different classes of sphingolipids in maternal plasma. We used a reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) approach for determining different sphingolipid molecular species (sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), dihydro-sphingosine-1-phosphate (DH-S1P), sphingomyelins (SM) and ceramides (Cer)) in cross-gestational samples of human plasma from PE (n = 7, 21 plasma samples across pregnancy) and CTL (n = 7, 21 plasma samples across pregnancy) patients. Results Plasma levels of angiogenic S1P did not change significantly in control and in preeclamptic patients´ group across gestation. DH-S1P was significantly decreased in second trimester plasma of PE patients in comparison to their first trimester, which could contribute to reduced endothelial barrier observed in PE. The major ceramide species (Cer 16:0 and Cer 24:0) tended to be up-regulated in plasma of control and PE subjects across gestation. The levels of a less abundant plasma ceramide species (Cer 14:0) were significantly lower in first trimester plasma of PE patients when compared with their gestational-matched control samples (p = 0.009). Major plasma sphingomyelin species (SM 16:0, SM 18:1 and SM 24:0) tended to be higher in control pregnancies across gestation. However, in PE patients, SM 16:0, SM 18:0 and SM 18:1 showed significant up-regulation across gestation, pointing to atherogenic properties of the sphingomyelins and particularly the potential contribution of SM 18:0 to the disease development. In addition, two major sphingomyelins, SM 16:0 and SM 18:0, were significantly lower in first trimester plasma of PE patients versus first trimester samples of respective controls (p = 0.007 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusions Cross-gestational analysis of maternal plasma of preeclamptic and normotensive women identifies differences in the biochemical profile of major sphingolipids (DH-S1P, sphingomyelins and ceramides) between these two groups. In addition, first trimester maternal plasma sphingolipids (Cer 14:0, SM 16:0 and SM 18:0) may serve in the future as early biomarkers of PE occurrence and development

    Fetal programming and gestational diabetes mellitus

    Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined by new-onset glucose intolerance during pregnancy. About 2–5% of all pregnant women develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancies and the prevalence has increased considerably during the last decade. This metabolic condition is manifested when pancreatic β-cells lose their ability to compensate for increased insulin resistance during pregnancy, however, the pathogenesis of the disease remains largely unknown. Gestational diabetes is strongly associated with adverse pregnancy outcome as well as with long-term adverse effects on the offspring which likely occurs due to epigenetic modifications of the fetal genome. In the current review we address gestational diabetes and the short and long term complications for both mothers and offspring focusing on the importance of fetal programming in conferring risk of developing diseases in adulthood

    Exergy cost assessment of solar trigeneration plant based on a concentrated solar power plant as the prime mover

    An exergy cost assessment of solar trigeneration plant to generate electricity, fresh-water, and heat is carried out in order to study the process of exergy cost formation, to determine the key components that contribute to the cost of each product, and to establish the best configuration in term of unit exergy cost. The solar trigeneration plants evaluated consist of a concentrated solar power (CSP), a multi-effect distillation plant, and a process heat module, in which the CSP plant is the prime mover. The methodology includes modeling and evaluating the performance of standalone and trigeneration plants using the symbolic exergoeconomic methodology. Results show that the best configuration, in terms of exergy cost, is when the multi-effect distillation plant replaces the power cycle condenser. Regarding the costs formation, the key components which could be improved in their design are: solar collectors, evaporator, re-heater, dissipative systems, and productive subsystems

    Effects of a sugar-sweetened beverage tax on prices and affordability of soft drinks in Chile : A time series analysis

    Chile is one of several countries that recently implemented a fiscal policy to reduce soft drink (SD) intake and obesity. In 2014 the government increased the existing ad-valorem tax on high-sugar SD by 5% and decreased by 3% the tax on low-sugar SD, based on a 6.25gr/100 ml sugar threshold. This study aims to evaluate the tax modification passed-on to consumers through prices, and to calculate changes in affordability of SDs. We analysed nationally representative consumer price index data of 41 soft drinks within 6 beverage categories between 2009 and 2016. Price change post-tax implementation was estimated for different categories (carbonates, juices, concentrates, waters and energy-sport drinks), using time-series analyses. In addition, changes in affordability were evaluated by estimating the changes in prices relative to wages. The price of carbonates increased by 5.60% (CI 95% 3.18–8.03%) immediately after the tax was implemented. A sustained increase in the prices of concentrates was observed after the implementation. Unexpectedly, a smaller increase was also seen for the price of bottled water – a category that saw no tax change. There were no effects for juices and energy-sports drinks. There was a reduction in affordability for carbonates, concentrates and waters. Overall, the fiscal policy was effective in increasing prices and there are some signs of reduced affordability. Results varied substantially among categories directly affected by the tax policy. While for carbonates the price increase exceeded the tax change (‘over-shifting’), in other categories subject to a tax cut, a price reduction was expected but the opposite occurred. As the effect of the tax on prices differed between categories, the effects of the tax policy on consumption patterns are likely to be mixed. Our findings underline the need to better understand and anticipate price setting behaviour of firms in response to a tax

    First report on knockdown resistance mutations in wild populations of Aedes aegypti from Argentina determined by a novel multiplex high-resolution melting polymerase chain reaction method

    Background: The mosquito Aedes aegypti is an urban vector of dengue and other arboviruses. During epidemics of these viruses, pyrethroid insecticides are used for the control of adult mosquitoes. The worldwide resistance of Ae. aegypti to these insecticides is a cause of failure of vector control campaigns. The primary target of pyrethroids is the voltage-gated sodium channel. Point mutations in the gene coding for this channel, called knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations, are associated with pyrethroid resistance. Two kdr mutations, V1016I and F1534C, have increased in frequency in natural populations of Ae. aegypti in the Americas during the last decade. Their association with pyrethroid resistance has been largely demonstrated in field populations throughout the Americas, and in in vitro assays. Diagnostics for kdr polymorphism allow early detection of the spread of insecticide resistance, which is critical for timely decisions on vector management. Given the importance of resistance management, high-throughput methods for kdr genotyping are valuable tools as they can be used for resistance monitoring programs. These methods should be cost-effective, to allow regional-scale surveys. Despite the extensive presence of Ae. aegypti and incidence of dengue in Argentina, the presence, abundance, and distribution of kdr mutations in populations of this mosquito have yet to be reported for the country. Methods: Aedes aegypti samples were collected as immature stages or adults from Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and northern localities of Tartagal (Salta Province) and Calilegua (Jujuy Province). Immature stages were maintained in the laboratory until they developed into adults. A high-resolution melting assay, based on an analysis of melting temperatures, was developed for the simultaneous genotyping of V1016I and F1534C kdr mutations. We used this method to infer the presence and frequencies of kdr alleles in 11 wild populations from Argentina. Results: We demonstrated the presence of kdr mutations in Ae. aegypti in Argentina in regions where this species is under different selection pressures due to the use of pyrethroids. The populations under analysis are located in geographically distant regions of the species’ distribution in Argentina: the northern provinces of Salta and Jujuy and the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Higher frequencies of resistant-associated alleles were detected in the northern region. We report a multiplex high-throughput assay based on a high-resolution melting polymerase chain reaction method for the simultaneous genotyping of V1016I and F1534C kdr mutations. This assay was shown to be cost-effective, and thus provides an interesting molecular tool for kdr genotyping in A. aegypti control campaigns. Conclusions: We report, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, the presence of kdr mutations in populations of Ae. aegypti from geographically distant locations of Argentina that differ with respect to their epidemiological situation and history of mosquito control. We have developed a high-throughput method for the genotyping of kdr mutations in Ae. aegypti from the Americas. Given its affordability and short running time, this method can be used in control campaigns to monitor the presence and spread of kdr alleles.     Spin resonance under topological driving fields

    We study the dynamics of a localized spin-1/2 driven by a time-periodic magnetic field that undergoes a topological transition. Despite the strongly non-adiabatic effects dominating the spin dynamics, we find that the field's topology appears clearly imprinted in the Floquet spin states through an effective Berry phase emerging in the quasienergy. This has remarkable consequences on the spin resonance condition suggesting a whole new class of experiments to spot topological transitions in the dynamics of spins and other two-level systems, from nuclear magnetic resonance to strongly-driven superconducting qubits.España, Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad FIS2014-53385-

    Maternal exposure to a high-magnitude earthquake during pregnancy influences pre-reading skills in early childhood

    Exposure to an adverse prenatal environment can influence fetal development and result in long-lasting changes in the offspring. However, the association between maternal exposure to stressful events during pregnancy and the achievement of pre-reading skills in the offspring is unknown. Here we examined the association between prenatal exposure to the Chilean high-magnitude earthquake that occurred on February 27th, 2010 and the development of early reading precursors skills (listening comprehension, print knowledge, alphabet knowledge, vocabulary, and phonological awareness) in children at kindergarten age. This multilevel retrospective cohort study including 3280 children, of whom 2415 were unexposed and 865 were prenatally exposed to the earthquake shows substantial evidence that maternal exposure to an unambiguously stressful event resulted in impaired pre-reading skills and that a higher detrimental effect was observed in those children who had been exposed to the earthquake during the first trimester of gestation. In addition, females were more significantly affected by the exposure to the earthquake than their male peers in alphabet knowledge; contrarily, males were more affected than females in print knowledge skills. These findings suggest that early intervention programs for pregnant women and/or children exposed to prenatal stress may be effective strategies to overcome impaired pre-reading skills in children
