Optimum conditions for image quality contrast were studied with phantom method by means of MRI system (of constant conduction type ; 0.1-T) in order to detect tumor lesions of liver that show no distinct contrast by usual roentgeno-graphic methods. Signal intensity of liver, fat and muscle were maximally suppressed at 1000 ms of TR and 100 ms of TI by the short inversion time inversion recovery (STIR) method, resulting in distinct visualization of liver tumor with extremely good contrast. Clinical investigation with the usual T1- and T2- weighted images under the same conditions identified hepatocellular carcinoma in 22 out of 31 patients (37 of 58 nodules, 64%), cholangiocellular carcinoma 3 of 5 (3 of 6 nodules, 50%), metastatic liver cancer in 55 out of 68 (111 of 143 nodules, 78%), hepatic hemangioma in 32 out of 36 (41 of 47 nodules, 87%) and liver cyst in 8 out of 8 (100%). In contrast, hepatocellular carcinoma was visualized in 30 out of 31 patients (54 of 58 nodules, 93%), cholangiocellular carcinoma in 5 out of 5 (6 of 6 nodules, 100%), metastatic liver cancer in 66 out of 68 (139 of 143 nod-ules, 97%), hepatic hemangioma in 36 out of 36 (47 of 47 nodules, 100%) and liver cyst in 8 out of 8 (100%). The results suggest that STIR (TR : 1000 ms, TI : 100 ms, TE : 18 ms) is extremely useful in screening tumor lesions of the liver

he Large Helical Device (LHD) has been extending an operational regime of net-current free plasmas towardsthe fusion relevant condition with taking advantage of a net current-free heliotron concept and employing a superconducting coil system. Heating capability has exceeded 10 MW and the central ion and electron temperatureshave reached 7 and 10 keV, respectively. The maximum value of β and pulse length have been extended to 3.2% and 150 s, respectively. Many encouraging physical findings have been obtained. Topics from recent experiments, which should be emphasized from the aspect of theoretical approaches, are reviewed. Those are (1) Prominent features in the inward shifted configuration, i.e., mitigation of an ideal interchange mode in the configuration with magnetic hill, and confinement improvement due to suppression of both anomalous and neoclassical transport, (2) Demonstration ofbifurcation of radial electric field and associated formation of an internal transport barrier, and (3) Dynamics of magnetic islands and clarification of the role of separatrix

This report deals with clinical study on treatment of urinary tract infections with a new broadspectrum penicillin (Viccillin). Oral administration of Vic c illin, 1-1.5 gm a day for 3 to 10 days, was tried in 15 cases of cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, pyelitis and epididymitis caused by staphylococci, gonococci, escherichia coli, or mixed of them. The drug showed remarkab l e effects in clinical responses. Toxic signs were not observed with exception of 3 cases

Integration of Residue Attributes for Sequence Diversity Characterization of Terpenoid Enzymes

Progress in the “omics” fields such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics has engendered a need for innovative analytical techniques to derive meaningful information from the ever increasing molecular data. KNApSAcK motorcycle DB is a popular database for enzymes related to secondary metabolic pathways in plants. One of the challenges in analyses of protein sequence data in such repositories is the standard notation of sequences as strings of alphabetical characters. This has created lack of a natural underlying metric that eases amenability to computation. In view of this requirement, we applied novel integration of selected biochemical and physical attributes of amino acids derived from the amino acid index and quantified in numerical scale, to examine diversity of peptide sequences of terpenoid synthases accumulated in KNApSAcK motorcycle DB. We initially generated a reduced amino acid index table. This is a set of biochemical and physical properties obtained by random forest feature selection of important indices from the amino acid index. Principal component analysis was then applied for characterization of enzymes involved in synthesis of terpenoids. The variance explained was increased by incorporation of residue attributes for analyses
