Isolation and characterization of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive flavones from premna odorata blanco
Premna odorata Blanco (Verbenaceae) is a native tree of the Philippines where its leaves are used traditionally for vaginal irrigation and tuberculosis. It is one of the seven components of a commercialized Philippine herbal preparation called "Pito-Pito". Its medicinal uses, however, have not been scientifically validated. This tree is not commonly cultivated and thrive in the less accessible limestone forests of the Philippines. Solvent partitioning and fractionation of the ethanolic crude extract of the leaves isolated two yellow amorphous powders. The identities of these compounds were determined by LC/MS/MS and NMR spectroscopic analyses, and their spectra were compared with literature data. The isolates were flavone aglycones which were the widespread acacetin and the nonwidespread diosmetin. These flavones were isolated from the P. odorata for the first time ever. They had been reported by earlier studies to exhibit medicinal properties as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive. Thus, the current study has provided a scientific evidence of the medicinal properties of the leaves of P. odorata that could become the popular basis for the plant's sustainable use, conservation and cultivation. © 2011 Academic Journals.published_or_final_versio
Phononic band structure engineering for high-Q gigahertz surface acoustic wave resonators on lithium niobate
Phonons at gigahertz frequencies interact with electrons, photons, and atomic
systems in solids, and therefore have extensive applications in signal
processing, sensing, and quantum technologies. Surface acoustic wave (SAW)
resonators that confine surface phonons can play a crucial role in such
integrated phononic systems due to small mode size, low dissipation, and
efficient electrical transduction. To date, it has been challenging to achieve
high quality (Q) factor and small phonon mode size for SAW resonators at
gigahertz frequencies. Here, we present a methodology to design compact high-Q
SAW resonators on lithium niobate operating at gigahertz frequencies. We
experimentally verify out designs and demonstrate Q factors in excess of
at room temperature ( at 4 Kelvin) and mode area as
low as . This is achieved by phononic band structure
engineering, which provides high confinement with low mechanical loss. The
frequency-Q products (fQ) of our SAW resonators are greater than .
These high-fQ and small mode size SAW resonators could enable applications in
quantum phononics and integrated hybrid systems with phonons, photons, and
solid-state qubits
Very strong intrinsic supercurrent carrying ability and vortex avalanches in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting single crystals
We report that single crystals of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 with Tc = 32 K have a pinning
potential, U0, as high as 10^4 K, with U0 showing very little field
depend-ence. In addition, the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals become isotropic at
low temperatures and high magnetic fields, resulting in a very rigid vortex
lattice, even in fields very close to Hc2. The rigid vortices in the two
dimensional (Ba,K)Fe2As2 distinguish this compound from 2D high Tc cuprate
superconductors with 2D vortices, and make it being capable of cearrying very
high critical current.Flux jumping due to high Jc was also observed in large

Fabrication of FeSe1-x superconducting films with bulk properties
We have fabricated high-quality FeSe1-x superconducting films with a bulk Tc
of 11-12 K on different substrates, Al2O3(0001), SrTiO3(100), MgO(100), and
LaAlO3(100), by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. All the films were
grown at a high substrate temperature of 610 oC, and were preferentially
oriented along the (101) direction, the latter being to be a key to fabricating
of FeSe1-x superconducting thin films with high Tc. According to the energy
dispersive spectroscopy data, the Fe:Se composition ratio was 1:0.90+-0.02. The
FeSe1-x film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate showed the best quality with a high
upper critical magnetic field [Hc2(0)] of 56 T

Universal scaling of the Hall resistivity in MgB2 superconductors
The mixed-state Hall resistivity and the longitudinal resistivity in
superconducting MgB2 thin films have been investigated as a function of the
magnetic field over a wide range of current densities from 100 to 10000 A/cm^2.
We observe a universal Hall scaling behavior with a constant exponent of 2.0,
which is independent of the magnetic field, the temperature, and the current
density. This result can be interpreted well within the context of recent

Bio-psychosocial determinants of cardiovascular disease in a rural population on Crete, Greece: formulating a hypothesis and designing the SPILI-III study
Background: In 1988, the SPILI project was established in order to evaluate the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk
profile of the inhabitants of Spili, in rural Crete, Greece. The first reports from this project revealed that against the unfavourable risk factors’ profile observed, only a few men with a previous myocardial infarction were encountered. A follow-up study (SPILI II) was performed twelve years after the initial examination, and the unfavourable cardiovascular risk profile was re-confirmed.
Presentation of the Hypothesis: This paper presents a hypothesis formulated on the basis of previous research to
investigate if dynamic psycho-social determinants, including social coherence of the local community, religiosity and spirituality, are protective against the development of coronary heart disease in a well-defined population. Testing the Hypothesis: A follow-up examination of this Cretan cohort is currently being performed to assess the link between psychosocial factors and CVD. Psychosocial factors including sense of control, religiosity and spirituality are assessed in together with conventional CVD risk factors. Smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as dietary habits and activity levels are recorded. Oxidative stress and inflammatory markers, as well as ultrasound measurement of carotid intima media thickness, a preclinical marker of atherosclerosis, will also be measured. Implications of the hypothesis tested: The issue of the cardio-protective effect of psycho-social factors would be revisited based on the results of this Cretan cohort; nevertheless, further research is needed across different subpopulations in order to establish a definite relationship. A comprehensive approach based on the aspects of biosocial life may result in more accurate CVD risk management
Fluctuation Study of the Specific Heat of MgB2
The specific heat of polycrystalline MgB has been measured with
high resolution ac calorimetry from 5 to 45 K at constant magnetic fields. The
excess specific heat above T is discussed in terms of Gaussian
fluctuations and suggests that MgB is a bulk superconductor with
Ginzburg-Landau coherence length \AA . The transition-width
broadening in field is treated in terms of lowest-Landau-level (LLL)
fluctuations. That analysis requires that \AA . The underestimate
of the coherence length in field, along with deviations from 3D LLL
predictions, suggest that there is an influence from the anisotropy of B
