Singularities of bi-Hamiltonian systems
We study the relationship between singularities of bi-Hamiltonian systems and
algebraic properties of compatible Poisson brackets. As the main tool, we
introduce the notion of linearization of a Poisson pencil. From the algebraic
viewpoint, a linearized Poisson pencil can be understood as a Lie algebra with
a fixed 2-cocycle. In terms of such linearizations, we give a criterion for
non-degeneracy of singular points of bi-Hamiltonian systems and describe their
types
The physiological effects of elevated intra-abdominal pressure following aneurysm repair
AbstractObjectives: elevated intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) may cause widespread organ dysfunction (abdominal compartment syndrome) through effects on the respiratory, cardiac, renal and gastro-intestinal systems. The aim of this study was to document IAP following aneurysm surgery, and to determine the effect of IAH on outcome. Design: prospective observational study. Setting: University Hospital. Subjects: the patient cohort comprised 75 patients undergoing infra-renal aneurysm repair (53 non-ruptured [40 conventional - 1 death, 13 endovascular] and 22 conventionally repaired ruptured AAA - 8 deaths). IAP was quantified by bladder manometry at the termination of the procedure and at 24 h intervals in patients who remained intubated. Physiological indices of organ function were recorded. Statistical analysis utilized the unpaired t-test, Fischer's exact test and Pearson's correlation. Results: IAP was significantly higher at abdominal closure following ruptured aneurysm repair (15.4 mmHg [SE 1.6]) than conventional (10.5 [0.89]) or endovascular elective repair (6.4 [1.0]) of non-ruptured AAA. The sensitivity and specificity of IAP to predict subsequent mortality was analysed using a receiver characteristic operating curve. This analysis demonstrated that a cut off of 15 mmHg was the most useful for indicating patients at risk (sensitivity 0.66, specificity 0.79). Physiological indices of organ dysfunction (pH[p = 0.027], base excess [p = 0.005], peak inspiratory pressure [p = 0.0015], CVP and urine output [p = 0.0029]) were significantly impaired in patients with IAP ≥ 15 mmHg, in comparison to patients with lower pressures. IAP correlated significantly with indices of cardiac (CVP p = 0.038), respiratory (PaO2/FiO2, p = 0.026), and renal function (urine output p = 0.046). Conclusions: these data suggest that the management of IAH may have a role following repair of ruptured AAA. High intra-abdominal pressures rarely complicate elective or endovascular aneurysm repair.Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 26, 293-298 (2003
Magnetic Flux of EUV Arcade and Dimming Regions as a Relevant Parameter for Early Diagnostics of Solar Eruptions - Sources of Non-Recurrent Geomagnetic Storms and Forbush Decreases
This study aims at the early diagnostics of geoeffectiveness of coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) from quantitative parameters of the accompanying EUV dimming
and arcade events. We study events of the 23th solar cycle, in which major
non-recurrent geomagnetic storms (GMS) with Dst <-100 nT are sufficiently
reliably identified with their solar sources in the central part of the disk.
Using the SOHO/EIT 195 A images and MDI magnetograms, we select significant
dimming and arcade areas and calculate summarized unsigned magnetic fluxes in
these regions at the photospheric level. The high relevance of this eruption
parameter is displayed by its pronounced correlation with the Forbush decrease
(FD) magnitude, which, unlike GMSs, does not depend on the sign of the Bz
component but is determined by global characteristics of ICMEs. Correlations
with the same magnetic flux in the solar source region are found for the GMS
intensity (at the first step, without taking into account factors determining
the Bz component near the Earth), as well as for the temporal intervals between
the solar eruptions and the GMS onset and peak times. The larger the magnetic
flux, the stronger the FD and GMS intensities are and the shorter the ICME
transit time is. The revealed correlations indicate that the main quantitative
characteristics of major non-recurrent space weather disturbances are largely
determined by measurable parameters of solar eruptions, in particular, by the
magnetic flux in dimming areas and arcades, and can be tentatively estimated in
advance with a lead time from 1 to 4 days. For GMS intensity, the revealed
dependencies allow one to estimate a possible value, which can be expected if
the Bz component is negative.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Changes in the firn structure of the western Greenland Ice Sheet caused by recent warming
Atmospheric warming over the Greenland Ice Sheet during the last 2 decades has increased the amount of surface meltwater production, resulting in the migration of melt and percolation regimes to higher altitudes and an increase in the amount of ice content from refrozen meltwater found in the firn above the superimposed ice zone. Here we present field and airborne radar observations of buried ice layers within the near-surface (0–20 m) firn in western Greenland, obtained from campaigns between 1998 and 2014. We find a sharp increase in firn-ice content in the form of thick widespread layers in the percolation zone, which decreases the capacity of the firn to store meltwater. The estimated total annual ice content retained in the near-surface firn in areas with positive surface mass balance west of the ice divide in Greenland reached a maximum of 74 ± 25 Gt in 2012, compared to the 1958–1999 average of 13 ± 2 Gt, while the percolation zone area more than doubled between 2003 and 2012. Increased melt and column densification resulted in surface lowering averaging −0.80 ± 0.39 m yr−1 between 1800 and 2800 m in the accumulation zone of western Greenland. Since 2007, modeled annual melt and refreezing rates in the percolation zone at elevations below 2100 m surpass the annual snowfall from the previous year, implying that mass gain in the region is retained after melt in the form of refrozen meltwater. If current melt trends over high elevation regions continue, subsequent changes in firn structure will have implications for the hydrology of the ice sheet and related abrupt seasonal densification could become increasingly significant for altimetry-derived ice sheet mass balance estimates
The first multi-wavelength campaign of AXP 4U 0142+61 from radio to hard X-rays
For the first time a quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign has been
performed on an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar from the radio to the hard X-ray band.
4U 0142+61 was an INTEGRAL target for 1 Ms in July 2005. During these
observations it was also observed in the X-ray band with Swift and RXTE, in the
optical and NIR with Gemini North and in the radio with the WSRT. In this paper
we present the source-energy distribution. The spectral results obtained in the
individual wave bands do not connect smoothly; apparently components of
different origin contribute to the total spectrum. Remarkable is that the
INTEGRAL hard X-ray spectrum (power-law index 0.79 +/- 0.10) is now measured up
to an energy of ~230 keV with no indication of a spectral break. Extrapolation
of the INTEGRAL power-law spectrum to lower energies passes orders of magnitude
underneath the NIR and optical fluxes, as well as the low ~30 microJy (2 sigma)
upper limit in the radio band.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. To be published in the proceedings of the

Coronal Shock Waves, EUV waves, and Their Relation to CMEs. I. Reconciliation of "EIT waves", Type II Radio Bursts, and Leading Edges of CMEs
We show examples of excitation of coronal waves by flare-related abrupt
eruptions of magnetic rope structures. The waves presumably rapidly steepened
into shocks and freely propagated afterwards like decelerating blast waves that
showed up as Moreton waves and EUV waves. We propose a simple quantitative
description for such shock waves to reconcile their observed propagation with
drift rates of metric type II bursts and kinematics of leading edges of coronal
mass ejections (CMEs). Taking account of different plasma density falloffs for
propagation of a wave up and along the solar surface, we demonstrate a close
correspondence between drift rates of type II bursts and speeds of EUV waves,
Moreton waves, and CMEs observed in a few known events.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures. Solar Physics, published online. The final

Simulations of the Static Friction Due to Adsorbed Molecules
The static friction between crystalline surfaces separated by a molecularly
thin layer of adsorbed molecules is calculated using molecular dynamics
simulations. These molecules naturally lead to a finite static friction that is
consistent with macroscopic friction laws. Crystalline alignment, sliding
direction, and the number of adsorbed molecules are not controlled in most
experiments and are shown to have little effect on the friction. Temperature,
molecular geometry and interaction potentials can have larger effects on
friction. The observed trends in friction can be understood in terms of a
simple hard sphere model.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure
What is the Nature of EUV Waves? First STEREO 3D Observations and Comparison with Theoretical Models
One of the major discoveries of the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope
(EIT) on SOHO were intensity enhancements propagating over a large fraction of
the solar surface. The physical origin(s) of the so-called `EIT' waves is still
strongly debated. They are considered to be either wave (primarily fast-mode
MHD waves) or non-wave (pseudo-wave) interpretations. The difficulty in
understanding the nature of EUV waves lies with the limitations of the EIT
observations which have been used almost exclusively for their study. Their
limitations are largely overcome by the SECCHI/EUVI observations on-board the
STEREO mission. The EUVI telescopes provide high cadence, simultaneous
multi-temperature coverage, and two well-separated viewpoints. We present here
the first detailed analysis of an EUV wave observed by the EUVI disk imagers on
December 07, 2007 when the STEREO spacecraft separation was .
Both a small flare and a CME were associated with the wave cadence, and single
temperature and viewpoint coverage. These limitations are largely overcome by
the SECCHI/EUVI observations on-board the STEREO mission. The EUVI telescopes
provide high cadence, simultaneous multi-temperature coverage, and two
well-separated viewpoints. Our findings give significant support for a
fast-mode interpretation of EUV waves and indicate that they are probably
triggered by the rapid expansion of the loops associated with the CME.Comment: Solar Physics, 2009, Special STEREO Issue, in pres
