SN 2006bp: Probing the Shock Breakout of a Type II-P Supernova
HET optical spectroscopy and unfiltered ROTSE-III photometry spanning the
first 11 months since explosion of the Type II-P SN 2006bp are presented. Flux
limits from the days before discovery combined with the initial rapid
brightening suggest the supernova was first detected just hours after shock
breakout. Optical spectra obtained about 2 days after breakout exhibit narrow
emission lines corresponding to HeII 4200, HeII 4686, and CIV 5805 in the rest
frame, and these features persist in a second observation obtained 5 hours
later; however, these emission lines are not detected the following night nor
in subsequent observations. We suggest that these lines emanate from material
close to the explosion site, possibly in the outer layers of the progenitor
that have been ionized by the high energy photons released at shock breakout. A
P-Cygni profile is observed around 4450 A in the +2 and +3 day spectra.
Previous studies have attributed this feature to high velocity H-beta, but we
discuss the possibility that this profile is instead due to HeII 4687. Further
HET observations (14 nights in total) covering the spectral evolution across
the photometric plateau up to 73 days after breakout and during the nebular
phase around day +340 are presented, and expansion velocities are derived for
key features. The measured decay slope for the unfiltered light curve is 0.0073
+/- 0.0004 mag/day between days +121 and +335, which is significantly slower
than the decay of rate 56Co. We combine our HET measurements with published
X-ray, UV, and optical data to obtain a quasi-bolometric light curve through
day +60. We see a slow cooling over the first 25 days, but no sign of an early
sharp peak; any such feature from the shock breakout must have lasted less than

Measuring surface-area-to-volume ratios in soft porous materials using laser-polarized xenon interphase exchange NMR
We demonstrate a minimally invasive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
technique that enables determination of the surface-area-to-volume ratio (S/V)
of soft porous materials from measurements of the diffusive exchange of
laser-polarized 129Xe between gas in the pore space and 129Xe dissolved in the
solid phase. We apply this NMR technique to porous polymer samples and find
approximate agreement with destructive stereological measurements of S/V
obtained with optical confocal microscopy. Potential applications of
laser-polarized xenon interphase exchange NMR include measurements of in vivo
lung function in humans and characterization of gas chromatography columns.Comment: 14 pages of text, 4 figure
Open-Access, Low-Magnetic-Field MRI System for Lung Research
An open-access magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is being developed for use in research on orientational/gravitational effects on lung physiology and function. The open-access geometry enables study of human subjects in diverse orientations. This system operates at a magnetic flux density, considerably smaller than the flux densities of typical other MRI systems, that can be generated by resistive electromagnet coils (instead of the more-expensive superconducting coils of the other systems). The human subject inhales air containing He-3 or Xe-129 atoms, the nuclear spins of which have been polarized by use of a laser beam to obtain a magnetic resonance that enables high-resolution gas space imaging at the low applied magnetic field. The system includes a bi-planar, constant-current, four-coil electromagnet assembly and associated electronic circuitry to apply a static magnetic field of 6.5 mT throughout the lung volume; planar coils and associated circuitry to apply a pulsed magnetic-field-gradient for each spatial dimension; a single, detachable radio-frequency coil and associated circuitry for inducing and detecting MRI signals; a table for supporting a horizontal subject; and electromagnetic shielding surrounding the electromagnet coils

Actinomycosis of the parotid masquerading as malignant neoplasm.
BACKGROUND: Primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland is of rare occurrence and can mimic a malignant neoplasm both clinically as well as radiologically. CASE PRESENTATION: We present here a case of primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland presenting with a parotid mass lesion with erosion of skull bones. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical presentation of cervico-facial actinomycosis is characterized by the presence of a suppurative or indurative mass with discharging sinuses. The lesion demonstrates characteristic features on fine needle aspiration cytology and histology, however at times the findings are equivocal
Resonant nonlinear magneto-optical effects in atoms
In this article, we review the history, current status, physical mechanisms,
experimental methods, and applications of nonlinear magneto-optical effects in
atomic vapors. We begin by describing the pioneering work of Macaluso and
Corbino over a century ago on linear magneto-optical effects (in which the
properties of the medium do not depend on the light power) in the vicinity of
atomic resonances, and contrast these effects with various nonlinear
magneto-optical phenomena that have been studied both theoretically and
experimentally since the late 1960s. In recent years, the field of nonlinear
magneto-optics has experienced a revival of interest that has led to a number
of developments, including the observation of ultra-narrow (1-Hz)
magneto-optical resonances, applications in sensitive magnetometry, nonlinear
magneto-optical tomography, and the possibility of a search for parity- and

Meson exchange and nucleon polarizabilities in the quark model
Modifications to the nucleon electric polarizability induced by pion and
sigma exchange in the q-q potentials are studied by means of sum rule
techniques within a non-relativistic quark model. Contributions from meson
exchange interactions are found to be small and in general reduce the quark
core polarizability for a number of hybrid and one-boson-exchange q-q models.
These results can be explained by the constraints that the baryonic spectrum

A Low Protein Diet Increases the Hypoxic Tolerance in Drosophila
Dietary restriction is well known to increase the life span of a variety of organisms from yeast to mammals, but the relationships between nutrition and the hypoxic tolerance have not yet been considered. Hypoxia is a major cause of cell death in myocardial infarction and stroke. Here we forced hypoxia-related death by exposing one-day-old male Drosophila to chronic hypoxia (5% O(2)) and analysed their survival. Chronic hypoxia reduced the average life span from 33.6 days to 6.3 days when flies were fed on a rich diet. A demographic analysis indicated that chronic hypoxia increased the slope of the mortality trajectory and not the short-term risk of death. Dietary restriction produced by food dilution, by yeast restriction, or by amino acid restriction partially reversed the deleterious action of hypoxia. It increased the life span of hypoxic flies up to seven days, which represented about 25% of the life time of an hypoxic fly. Maximum survival of hypoxic flies required only dietary sucrose, and it was insensitive to drugs such as rapamycin and resveratrol, which increase longevity of normoxic animals.
