Simulated X-ray Cluster Temperature Maps
Temperature maps are presented of the 9 largest clusters in the mock
catalogues of Muanwong et al. for both the Preheating and Radiative models. The
maps show that clusters are not smooth, featureless systems, but contain a
variety of substructure which should be observable. The surface brightness
contours are generally elliptical and features that are seen include cold
clumps, hot spiral features, and cold fronts. Profiles of emission-weighted
temperature, surface brightness and emission-weighted pressure across the
surface brightness discontinuities seen in one of the bimodal clusters are
consistent with the cold front in Abell 2142 observed by Markevitch et al.Comment: Submitted to Monthly Notices Royal Astronomical Societ
Nonlinear surface impurity in a semi-infinite 2D square lattice
We examine the formation of localized states on a generalized nonlinear
impurity located at, or near the surface of a semi-infinite 2D square lattice.
Using the formalism of lattice Green functions, we obtain in closed form the
number of bound states as well as their energies and probability profiles, for
different nonlinearity parameter values and nonlinearity exponents, at
different distances from the surface. We specialize to two cases: impurity
close to an "edge" and impurity close to a "corner". We find that, unlike the
case of a 1D semi-infinite lattice, in 2D, the presence of the surface helps

Multi-disciplinary Investigation of the Windows of John Thornton, focusing on the Great East Window of York Minster
Twenty-seven samples of glass from panel 2e of John Thornton’s Great East Window (1405–1408) at York Minster have been analyzed using energy dispersive x-ray analysis in the scanning electron microscope. This paper highlights our findings. Inserts and replacements of early modern and medieval glass have been identifi ed. White (colorless) and colored medieval glass differ significantly in composition, suggesting diff erent sources. Eleven samples of white glass original to the window are identical within analytical error, suggesting they came from the same batch, but the head of Christ is from another panel. Blue and flashed red glass were each the product of more than one batch of melting. Primarily, the condition of the glass is dependent upon silica content. Further investigations of other panels from the Great East Window, and of other windows by Thornton, are ongoing
Spontaneous creation of non-zero angular momentum modes in tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate Bose gases
We investigate the dynamics of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate
Bose gases. The reduced dimensionality of the clouds enables us to excite
specific angular momentum modes by tuning the coupling strength, thereby
creating striking patterns in the atom density profile. The extreme sensitivity
of the system to the coupling and initial phase difference results in a rich
variety of subsequent dynamics, including vortex production, complex
oscillations in relative atom number and chiral symmetry breaking due to
counter-rotation of the two clouds.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Meteorological satellite data: A tool to describe the health of the world's agriculture
Local area coverage data acquired aboard the TIROS-N satellite family by the advanced very high resolution radiometer systems was examined to determine the agricultural information current. Albedo differences between channel 2 and channel 1 of the advanced very high resolution radiometer LAC (called EVI) are shown to be closely correlated to the Ashburn vegetative index produced from LANDSAT multispectral scanner data which have been shown to vary in response to "greenness", soil moisture, and crop production. The statistical correlation between the EVI and the Ashburn Vegetative Index (+ or - 1 deg) is 0.86
High-Symmetry Polarization Domains in Low-Symmetry Ferroelectrics
We present experimental evidence for hexagonal domain faceting in the
ferroelectric polymer PVDF-TrFE films having the lower orthorhombic
crystallographic symmetry. This effect can arise from purely electrostatic
depolarizing forces. We show that in contrast to magnetic bubble shape domains
where such type of deformation instability has a predominantly elliptical
character, the emergence of more symmetrical circular harmonics is favored in
ferroelectrics with high dielectric constant
Transmission and Reflection of Bose-Einstein Condensates Incident on a Gaussian Potential Barrier
We investigate how Bose-Einstein condensates, whose initial state is either
irrotational or contains a single vortex, scatter off a one-dimensional
Gaussian potential barrier. We find that for low atom densities the vortex
structure within the condensate is maintained during scattering, whereas at
medium and high densities, multiple additional vortices can be created by the
scattering process, resulting in complex dynamics and disruption of the atom
cloud. This disruption originates from two different mechanisms associated
respectively with the initial rotation of the atom cloud and the interference
between the incident and reflected matter waves. We investigate how the
reflection probability depends on the vorticity of the initial state and on the
incident velocity of the Bose-Einstein condensate. To interpret our results, we
derive a general analytical expression for the reflection coefficient of a
rotating Bose-Einstein condensate that scatters off a spatially-varying

Calculating the mass fraction of primordial black holes
We reinspect the calculation for the mass fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs) which are formed from primordial perturbations, finding that performing the calculation using the comoving curvature perturbation c in the standard way vastly overestimates the number of PBHs, by many orders of magnitude. This is because PBHs form shortly after horizon entry, meaning modes significantly larger than the PBH are unobservable and should not affect whether a PBH forms or not - this important effect is not taken into account by smoothing the distribution in the standard fashion. We discuss alternative methods and argue that the density contrast, Δ, should be used instead as super-horizon modes are damped by a factor k2. We make a comparison between using a Press-Schechter approach and peaks theory, finding that the two are in close agreement in the region of interest. We also investigate the effect of varying the spectral index, and the running of the spectral index, on the abundance of primordial black holes
