From k-essence to generalised Galileons
We determine the most general scalar field theories which have an action that
depends on derivatives of order two or less, and have equations of motion that
stay second order and lower on flat space-time. We show that those theories can
all be obtained from linear combinations of Lagrangians made by multiplying a
particular form of the Galileon Lagrangian by an arbitrary scalar function of
the scalar field and its first derivatives. We also obtain curved space-time
extensions of those theories which have second order field equations for both
the metric and the scalar field. This provide the most general extension, under
the condition that field equations stay second order, of k-essence, Galileons,
k-Mouflage as well as of the kinetically braided scalars. It also gives the
most general action for a scalar classicalizer, which has second order field
equations. We discuss the relation between our construction and the Euler
hierachies of Fairlie et al, showing in particular that Euler hierachies allow
one to obtain the most general theory when the latter is shift symmetric. As a
simple application of our formalism, we give the covariantized version of the
conformal Galileon.Comment: 25 page
Reconstructing Images from Projections Using the Maximum-Entropy Method. Numerical Simulations of Low-Aspect Astrotomography
The reconstruction of images from a small number of projections using the
maximum-entropy method (MEM) with the Shannon entropy is considered. MEM
provides higher-quality image reconstruction for sources with extended
components than the Hogbom CLEAN method, which is also used in low-aspect
astrotomography. The quality of image reconstruction for sources with mixed
structure containing bright, compact features embedded in a comparatively weak,
extended base can be further improved using a difference-mapping method, which
requires a generalization of MEM for the reconstruction of sign-variable
functions. We draw conclusions based on the results of numerical simulations for
a number of model radio sources with various morphologies.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

Trace element mobility in cold desert alteration systems
Introduction: Alteration of rocks is a fundamental process that occurs in all environments across the solar system in different forms. Understanding the patterns of alteration, the formation of different products, the liberation of certain elements from minerals can inform us about environments billions of years old. They can give us information about quantities of water, temperatures, atmospheres and biology. This study focuses on cold desert environments and the geochemical fingerprints processes leave in some of the most abundant minerals in the solar system.
Specifically, this study looks at how trace elements move in cold weathering systems, using Antarctic ordinary chondrites as an analogue, and how weathering features of cold environments combine with little water to interact with rocks.</br
MERLIN/VLA imaging of the gravitational lens system B0218+357
Gravitational lenses offer the possibility of accurately determining the
Hubble parameter (H_0) over cosmological distances, and B0218+357 is one of the
most promising systems for an application of this technique. In particular this
system has an accurately measured time delay (10.5+/-0.4 d; Biggs et al. 1999)
and preliminary mass modelling has given a value for H_0 of 69 +13/-19
km/s/Mpc. The error on this estimate is now dominated by the uncertainty in the
mass modelling. As this system contains an Einstein ring it should be possible
to constrain the model better by imaging the ring at high resolution. To
achieve this we have combined data from MERLIN and the VLA at a frequency of 5
GHz. In particular MERLIN has been used in multi-frequency mode in order to
improve substantially the aperture coverage of the combined data set. The
resulting map is the best that has been made of the ring and contains many new
and interesting features. Efforts are currently underway to exploit the new
data for lensing constraints using the LensClean algorithm (Kochanek & Narayan
1992).Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 pages, 4 included PostScript

Directing Differentiation of Pluripotent Stem Cells Toward Retinal Pigment Epithelium Lineage
Development of efficient and reproducible conditions for directed differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into specific cell types is important not only to understand early human development but also to enable more practical applications, such as in vitro disease modeling, drug discovery, and cell therapies. The differentiation of stem cells to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in particular holds promise as a source of cells for therapeutic replacement in age-related macular degeneration. Here we show development of an efficient method for deriving homogeneous RPE populations in a period of 45 days using an adherent, monolayer system and defined xeno-free media and matrices. The method utilizes sequential inhibition and activation of the Activin and bone morphogenetic protein signaling pathways and can be applied to both human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells as the starting population. In addition, we use whole genome transcript analysis to characterize cells at different stages of differentiation that provides further understanding of the developmental dynamics and fate specification of RPE. We show that with the described method, RPE develop through stages consistent with their formation during embryonic development. This characterization- together with the absence of steps involving embryoid bodies, three-dimensional culture, or manual dissections, which are common features of other protocols-makes this process very attractive for use in research as well as for clinical applications. SIGNIFICANCE: This report describes a novel method of directed differentiation to generate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells from pluripotent stem cells. The employed method is based on adherent monolayer culture using xeno-free conditions and manipulation of the Activin and bone morphogenetic protein signaling pathway using small molecules and recombinant proteins. Whole genome microarray analysis was performed to characterize the differentiation process and understand the developmental path of RPE generation in vitro. This method can be applied for generation of RPE for research as well as for clinical applications
