Not Alone: Tracing the Origins of Very Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs Through Multiplicity Studies
The properties of multiple stellar systems have long provided important
empirical constraints for star formation theories, enabling (along with several
other lines of evidence) a concrete, qualitative picture of the birth and early
evolution of normal stars. At very low masses (VLM; M <~ 0.1 M_sun), down to
and below the hydrogen burning minimum mass, our understanding of formation
processes is not as clear, with several competing theories now under
consideration. One means of testing these theories is through the empirical
characterization of VLM multiple systems. Here, we review the results of
various VLM multiplicity studies to date. These systems can be generally
characterized as closely separated (93% have projected separations Delta < 20
AU) and near equal-mass (77% have M_2/M_1 >= 0.8) occurring infrequently
(perhaps 10-30%). Both the frequency and maximum separation of stellar and
brown dwarf binaries steadily decrease for lower system masses, suggesting that
VLM binary formation and/or evolution may be a mass-dependent process. There is
evidence for a fairly rapid decline in the number of loosely-bound systems
below ~0.3 M_sun, corresponding to a factor of 10-20 increase in the minimum
binding energy of VLM binaries as compared to more massive stellar binaries.
This wide-separation ``desert'' is present among both field (~1-5 Gyr) and
older (> 100 Myr) cluster systems, while the youngest (<~10 Myr) VLM binaries,
particularly those in nearby, low-density star forming regions, appear to have
somewhat different systemic properties. We compare these empirical trends to
predictions laid out by current formation theories, and outline future
observational studies needed to probe the full parameter space of the lowest

Discovery of a 66 mas Ultracool Binary with Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics
We present the discovery of 2MASS J21321145+1341584AB as a closely separated
(0.066") very low-mass field dwarf binary resolved in the near-infrared by the
Keck II Telescope using laser guide star adaptive optics. Physical association
is deduced from the angular proximity of the components and constraints on
their common proper motion. We have obtained a near-infrared spectrum of the
binary and find that it is best described by an L5+/-0.5 primary and an
L7.5+/-0.5 secondary. Model-dependent masses predict that the two components
straddle the hydrogen burning limit threshold with the primary likely stellar
and the secondary likely substellar. The properties of this sytem - close
projected separation (1.8+/-0.3 AU) and near unity mass ratio - are consistent
with previous results for very low-mass field binaries. The relatively short
estimated orbital period of this system (~7-12 yr) makes it a good target for
dynamical mass measurements. Interestingly, the system's angular separation is
the tightest yet for any very low-mass binary published from a ground-based
telescope and is the tightest binary discovered with laser guide star adaptive

Substance P induces localization of MIF/α1-inhibitor-3 complexes to umbrella cells via paracellular transit through the urothelium in the rat bladder
BACKGROUND: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is released into the intraluminal fluid during bladder inflammation in the rat complexed to α1-inhibitor-3 (A1-I3; a rodent proteinase inhibitor in the α-macroglobulin family). The location of A1-I3 in the bladder had not been investigated. Therefore, we examined the location of A1-I3 and MIF/A1-I3 complexes in the bladder and changes due to experimental inflammation. METHODS: Anesthetized male rats had bladders removed with no treatment (intact) or were injected with Substance P (SP; s.c.; saline vehicle). After one hour intraluminal fluid was removed, bladder was excised and MIF and A1-I3 levels were determined using ELISA and/or western-blotting. MIF co-immunoprecipitation determined MIF/A1-I3 complexes in the bladder. Bladder sections were immunostained for A1-I3 and MIF/A1-I3. RESULTS: A1-I3 immunostaining was observed in interstitial spaces throughout the bladder (including submucosa) but not urothelium in intact and saline-treated rats. RT-PCR showed that the bladder does not synthesize A1-I3, therefore, A1-I3 in the interstitial space of the bladder must be plasma derived. In SP-treated rats, A1-I3 in the bladder increased and A1-I3 was observed traversing through the urothelium. Umbrella cells that do not show MIF and/or A1-I3 immunostaining in intact or saline-treated rats, showed co-localization of MIF and A1-I3 after SP-treatment. Western blotting demonstrated that in the bladder MIF formed non-covalent interactions and also binds covalently to A1-I3 to form high molecular weight MIF/A1-I3 complexes (170, 130 and 75-kDa, respectively, verified by co-immunoprecipitation). SP-induced inflammation selectively reduced 170-kDa MIF/A1-I3 in the bladder while increasing 170 and 130-kDa MIF/A1-I3 in the intraluminal fluid. CONCLUSION: A1-I3 and MIF/A1-I3 complexes are resident in bladder interstitium. During SP-induced inflammation, MIF/A1-I3 complexes are released from the bladder into the lumen. Binding of MIF/A1-I3 complexes to urothelial cells during inflammation suggests these complexes participate in the inflammatory reaction through activation of receptors for MIF and/or for A1-I3
A detailed semiologic analysis of childhood psychogenic nonepileptic seizures
Purpose: Psychogenic nonepileptic seizure (PNES) is an important differential diagnostic problem in patients with or without epilepsy. There are many studies that have analyzed PNES in adults; currently, however, there is no systematic assessment of purely childhood PNES semiology. Our study based on a large pediatric video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring (VEM) cohort, provides a detailed analysis of childhood PNES and assesses the usability of the current classification system described in adults. Methods: Medical and video-EEG records of 568 consecutive children (younger than 18 years) who underwent video-EEG monitoring (VEM) at our hospital were reviewed. Aura, type of movement, anatomic distribution, synchrony, symmetry, eye movement, responsiveness, vocalization, hyperventilation, vegetative and emotional signs, presence of eyewitness, and duration of the event were recorded among children with the diagnosis of PNES. We also compared our data with those of earlier adult studies. Key Findings: Seventy-five archived PNES of 27 children (21 girls; age 8-18 years) were reanalyzed. Nine children (33%) had the diagnosis of epilepsy currently or in the past. Mean age at the time of PNES onset was 11.6 (standard deviation 3.2) years. Mean duration of PNES was longer (269 s) compared to seizures of the epileptic group (83 s; p = 0.002). Eyewitnesses (mostly parents) were present in 89% of cases. Eighty percent of PNES had an abrupt start, with 68% also ending abruptly. In only 15% of events were the patients eyes closed at the beginning of the attack. Patients were unresponsive in 34%. The most frequent motor sign was tremor (25%) with the upper, rather than lower limbs more frequently involved. Pelvic thrusting was seen in only two attacks. Emotional-mostly negative-signs were observed during 32 PNES (43%). Based on Seneviratne et al.'s classification, 18 events (24%) were classified as rhythmic motor PNES, only half the frequency of that previously described in adults. No hypermotor PNES was found. The frequency of complex motor PNES (13%) and mixed PNES (4%) showed similar frequency in children as in adults. Dialeptic PNES was found more frequently among younger children. All PNES belonged to the same semiologic type in 23 patients (85%). Significance: Because homogeneity of PNES within a patient was high in the pediatric population, we found it useful to classify PNES into different semiologic categories. Dialeptic PNES seems to be more frequent among younger children. Tremor is the most frequent motor sign and usually accompanied by preserved responsiveness in childhood. Negative emotion is commonly seen in pediatric PNES, but pelvic thrusting is a rare phenomenon. We, therefore, suggest a modification of the present classification system in which PNES with motor activity is divided into minor and major motor PNES, and the latter group is subdivided into synchron rhythmic motor and asynchron motor PNES. We believe that our study, a detailed analysis on the semiology and classification of purely childhood PNES might assist the early and precise diagnosis of nonepileptic paroxysmal events
Identifying Primordial Substructure in NGC 2264
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the young cluster
NGC2264. Observations at 24 micron with the Multiband Imaging Photometer has
enabled us to identify the most highly embedded and youngest objects in
NGC2264. This letter reports on one particular region of NGC2264 where bright
24 micron sources are spatially configured in curious linear structures with
quasi-uniform separations. The majority of these sources (~60% are found to be
protostellar in nature with Class I spectral energy distributions. Comparison
of their spatial distribution with sub-millimeter data from Wolf-Chase (2003)
and millimeter data from Peretto et al. (2005) shows a close correlation
between the dust filaments and the linear spatial configurations of the
protostars, indicating that star formation is occurring primarily within dense
dusty filaments. Finally, the quasi-uniform separations of the protostars are
found to be comparable in magnitude to the expected Jeans length suggesting

Further evidence for increased macrophage migration inhibitory factor expression in prostate cancer
BACKGROUND: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a cytokine associated with prostate cancer, based on histologic evidence and circulating (serum) levels. Recent studies from another laboratory failed to document these results. This study's aims were to extend and confirm our previous data, as well as to define possible mechanisms for the discrepant results. Additional aims were to examine MIF expression, as well as the location of MIF's receptor, CD74, in human prostatic adenocarcinoma compared to matched benign prostate. METHODS: MIF amounts were determined in random serum samples remaining following routine PSA screening by ELISA. Native, denaturing and reducing polyacrylamide gels and Western blot analyses determined the MIF form in serum. Prostate tissue arrays were processed for MIF in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for MIF and CD74. MIF released into culture medium from normal epithelial, LNCaP and PC-3 cells was detected by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Median serum MIF amounts were significantly elevated in prostate cancer patients (5.87 ± 3.91 ng/ml; ± interquartile range; n = 115) compared with patients with no documented diagnosis of prostate cancer (2.19 ± 2.65 ng/ml; n = 158). ELISA diluent reagents that included bovine serum albumin (BSA) significantly reduced MIF serum detection (p < 0.01). MIF mRNA was localized to prostatic epithelium in all samples, but cancer showed statistically greater MIF expression. MIF and its receptor (CD74) were localized to prostatic epithelium. Increased secreted MIF was detected in culture medium from prostate cancer cell lines (LNCaP and PC-3). CONCLUSION: Increased serum MIF was associated with prostate cancer. Diluent reagents that included BSA resulted in MIF serum immunoassay interference. In addition, significant amounts of complexed MIF (180 kDa under denaturing conditions by Western blot) found in the serum do not bind to the MIF capture antibody. Increased MIF mRNA expression was observed in prostatic adenocarcinoma compared to benign tissue from matched samples, supporting our earlier finding of increased MIF gene expression in prostate cancer
Discovery of 9 New Companions to Nearby Young M Stars with the Altair AO System
We present results of a high-resolution, near-infrared survey of 41 nearby,
young (<~300 Myr) M0-M5.0 dwarfs using the Altair natural guide star adaptive
optics system at the Gemini North telescope. Twelve of the objects appear to be
binaries, 7 of which are reported here for the first time. One triple system
was discovered. Statistical properties are studied and compared with earlier (F
to K) and later (>= M6 very low-mass, VLM) populations. We find that the
separation distribution of the binaries in this sample peaks at 13+14-9 AU,
which is consistent with previous measurements of early-M binaries. Hence,
early-M binaries seem to occur in--on average--tighter systems than G binaries.
At the same time they are significantly wider than field VLM binary stars. The
distribution of mass ratios q of primary and secondary stars was found to show
an intermediate distribution between the strongly q-->1 peaked distribution of
field VLM systems and the almost flat distribution of earlier-type stars.
Consequently, we show evidence for relatively young, early-M binaries
representing a transition between the well known earlier star distributions and
the recently examined field VLM population characteristics. Despite the fact
that this survey was dedicated to the search for faint brown dwarf and
planetary mass companions, all planetary mass candidates were background
objects. We exclude the existence of physical companions with masses greater
than 10 Jupiter masses (M_Jup) at separations of >~40 AU and masses greater
than 24 M_Jup for separations >~10 AU around 37 of the 41 observed objects.Comment: To appear in the January 1, 2007 issue of the Astrophysical Journal,

Spitzer 24 micron Survey of Debris Disks in the Pleiades
We performed a 24 micron 2 Deg X 1 Deg survey of the Pleiades cluster, using
the MIPS instrument on Spitzer. Fifty four members ranging in spectral type
from B8 to K6 show 24 micron fluxes consistent with bare photospheres. All Be
stars show excesses attributed to free-free emission in their gaseous
envelopes. Five early-type stars and four solar-type stars show excesses
indicative of debris disks. We find a debris disk fraction of 25 % for B-A
members and 10 % for F-K3 ones. These fractions appear intermediate between
those for younger clusters and for the older field stars. They indicate a decay
with age of the frequency of the dust-production events inside the planetary
zone, with similar time scales for solar-mass stars as have been found
