Leading tone alignment in occitan disapproval statements
L'accent nuclear ascendent-descendent de les oracions expressant desacord en occità consta de tres tons: LH+L*. En comptes de precedir el to asterisc ("starred tone") a un interval fix en temps normalitzat (Pierrehumbert & Beckman 1989), els tons menadors ("leading tones") L i H s'alineen amb determinats punts d'ancoratge de la cadena de segments: les fronteres dreta i esquerra de la síl·laba pretònica, respectivament. El model de Grice (1995b) per a l'estructura dels accents tonals permet donar compte d'aquest patró d'alineació incloent els tons menadors en un node diferent que precedeix el que domina to seguidor ("trailing tone") i to asterisc.The rising-falling nuclear pitch accent of Occitan disapproval statements consists in three tonal targets: LH+L*. Instead of leading the starred tone at a fixed interval in normalized time (Pierrehumbert and Beckman 1989), the two L and H leading tone targets align with determinate anchoring points in the segmental stream, namely the left and right edges of the preaccentual syllable, respectively. Grice's (1995b) model for pitch accent structure allows accounting for this alignment pattern since it includes leading tones within a different node that precedes the one that dominates starred and trailing tones
An improvement of the Berry--Esseen inequality with applications to Poisson and mixed Poisson random sums
By a modification of the method that was applied in (Korolev and Shevtsova,
2009), here the inequalities

are proved for the
uniform distance between the standard normal distribution
function and the distribution function of the normalized sum of an
arbitrary number of independent identically distributed random
variables with zero mean, unit variance and finite third absolute moment
. The first of these inequalities sharpens the best known version of
the classical Berry--Esseen inequality since
by virtue of
the condition , and 0.4785 is the best known upper estimate of the
absolute constant in the classical Berry--Esseen inequality. The second
inequality is applied to lowering the upper estimate of the absolute constant
in the analog of the Berry--Esseen inequality for Poisson random sums to 0.3051
which is strictly less than the least possible value of the absolute constant
in the classical Berry--Esseen inequality. As a corollary, the estimates of the
rate of convergence in limit theorems for compound mixed Poisson distributions

Nonlinear DC-response in Composites: a Percolative Study
The DC-response, namely the - and - charateristics, of a variety
of composite materials are in general found to be nonlinear. We attempt to
understand the generic nature of the response charactersistics and study the
peculiarities associated with them. Our approach is based on a simple and
minimal model bond percolative network. We do simulate the resistor network
with appropritate linear and nonlinear bonds and obtain macroscopic nonlinear
response characteristics. We discuss the associated physics. An effective

The Electrical-Thermal Switching in Carbon Black-Polymer Composites as a Local Effect
Following the lack of microscopic information about the intriguing well-known
electrical-thermal switching mechanism in Carbon Black-Polymer composites, we
applied atomic force microscopy in order to reveal the local nature of the
process and correlated it with the characteristics of the widely used
commercial switches. We conclude that the switching events take place in
critical interparticle tunneling junctions that carry most of the current. The
macroscopic switched state is then a result of a dynamic-stationary state of

Piezoresistivity and conductance anisotropy of tunneling-percolating systems
Percolating networks based on interparticle tunneling conduction are shown to
yield a logarithmic divergent piezoresistive response close to the critical
point as long as the electrical conductivity becomes nonuniversal. At the same
time, the piezoresistivity or, equivalently, the conductivity anisotropy
exponent remains universal also when the conductive exponent is not,
suggesting a purely geometric origin of . We discuss our results in
relation to the nature of transport for a variety of materials such as
carbon-black--polymer composites and RuO_2-glass systems which show
nonuniversal transport properties and coexistence between tunneling and

Effect of Piezoelectric Polarization on Phonon group velocity in Wurtzite Nitrides
We have investigated the effect of piezoelectric (PZ) polarization property
on group velocity of phonons in binary as well as in ternary wurtzite nitrides.
It is found that with the presence of PZ polarization property, the phonon
group velocity is modified. The change in phonon group velocity due to PZ
polarization effect directly depends on piezoelectric tensor value. Using
different piezoelectric tensor values recommended by different workers in the
literature, percent change in group velocities of phonons has been estimated.
The Debye temperatures and frequencies of binary nitrides GaN, AlN and InN are
also calculated using the modified group velocities. For ternary nitrides
AlxGa(1-x)N, InxGa(1-x)N and InxAl(1-x)N, the phonon group velocities have been
calculated as a functions of composition. A small positive bowing is observed
in phonon group velocities of ternary alloys. Percent variations in phonon
group velocities are also calculated for a straightforward comparison among
ternary nitrides. The results are expected to show a change in phonon
relaxation rates and thermal conductivity of III-nitrides when piezoelectric

Growth and cycles of the Italian economy since 1861: the new evidence
Based on a newly-available large set of historical national accounts, the paper revisits the main features of economic growth and cycles in Italy for the post-Unification period 1861-2011. Alongside the structural changes in growth dynamics, the main sources of output and productivity growth are identified. As regards the analysis of the underlying cyclical component, a business cycle chronology is first established and then both the specific patterns of individual cycles and the co-movements of output with key macroeconomic variables are investigated. In the 150 years since its political Unification, Italy's economic growth was mainly propelled by consumption and investments, whereas on the supply side the industry and services sectors were by far the main contributors, also because of the positive effect of labour reallocation to nonfarm activities. Over the same period, Italy experienced approximately 20 business cycles of varying duration and amplitude. Output fluctuations were dominated by the short-term variability of agricultural production before World War II and by fluctuations of the industry sector thereafter. The cyclical behaviour exhibited by aggregate demand components conforms quite well to that evidenced in the standard international business cycle literature, although some exceptions arise in the pre-World War II years
Tracking the spatial diffusion of influenza and norovirus using telehealth data: A spatiotemporal analysis of syndromic data
Background: Telehealth systems have a large potential for informing public health authorities in
an early stage of outbreaks of communicable disease. Influenza and norovirus are common viruses
that cause significant respiratory and gastrointestinal disease worldwide. Data about these viruses
are not routinely mapped for surveillance purposes in the UK, so the spatial diffusion of national
outbreaks and epidemics is not known as such incidents occur. We aim to describe the
geographical origin and diffusion of rises in fever and vomiting calls to a national telehealth system,
and consider the usefulness of these findings for influenza and norovirus surveillance.
Methods: Data about fever calls (5- to 14-year-old age group) and vomiting calls (≥ 5-year-old age
group) in school-age children, proxies for influenza and norovirus, respectively, were extracted
from the NHS Direct national telehealth database for the period June 2005 to May 2006. The
SaTScan space-time permutation model was used to retrospectively detect statistically significant
clusters of calls on a week-by-week basis. These syndromic results were validated against existing
laboratory and clinical surveillance data.
Results: We identified two distinct periods of elevated fever calls. The first originated in the
North-West of England during November 2005 and spread in a south-east direction, the second
began in Central England during January 2006 and moved southwards. The timing, geographical
location, and age structure of these rises in fever calls were similar to a national influenza B
outbreak that occurred during winter 2005–2006. We also identified significantly elevated levels of
vomiting calls in South-East England during winter 2005–2006.
Conclusion: Spatiotemporal analyses of telehealth data, specifically fever calls, provided a timely
and unique description of the evolution of a national influenza outbreak. In a similar way the tool
may be useful for tracking norovirus, although the lack of consistent comparison data makes this
more difficult to assess. In interpreting these results, care must be taken to consider other
infectious and non-infectious causes of fever and vomiting. The scan statistic should be considered
for spatial analyses of telehealth data elsewhere and will be used to initiate prospective geographical
surveillance of influenza in England.
