Immunocytochemical localization of casein kinase II during interphase and mitosis
We have developed specific antibodies to synthetic peptide antigens that react with the individual subunits of casein kinase II (CKII). Using these antibodies, we studied the localization of CKII in asynchronous HeLa cells by immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy. Further studies were done on HeLa cells arrested at the G1/S transition by hydroxyurea treatment. Our results indicate that the CKII alpha and beta subunits are localized in the cytoplasm during interphase and are distributed throughout the cell during mitosis. Further electron microscopic investigation revealed that CKII alpha subunit is associated with spindle fibers during metaphase and anaphase. In contrast, the CKII alpha' subunit is localized in the nucleus during G1 and in the cytoplasm during S. Taken together, our results suggest that CKII may play significant roles in cell division control by shifting its localization between the cytoplasm and nucleus
Confirmation of Parity Violation in the Gamma Decay of
This paper reports measurements using the technique of On Line Nuclear
Orientation (OLNO) which reexamine the gamma decay of isomeric Hf and specifically the 501 keV 8 -- 6
transition. The irregular admixture of E2 to M2/E3 multipolarity in this
transition, deduced from the forward-backward asymmetry of its angular
distribution, has for decades stood as the prime evidence for parity mixing in
nuclear states. The experiment, based on ion implantation of the newly
developed mass-separated Hf beam at ISOLDE, CERN into an
iron foil maintained at millikelvin temperatures, produces higher degrees of
polarization than were achieved in previous studies of this system. The value
found for the E2/M2 mixing ratio, = -0.0324(16)(17), is in close
agreement with the previous published average value = - 0.030(2), in
full confirmation of the presence of the irregular E2 admixture in the 501 keV
transition. The temperature dependence of the forward-backward asymmetry has
been measured over a more extended range of nuclear polarization than
previously possible, giving further evidence for parity mixing of the 8 and 8 levels and the deduced E2/M2 mixing ratio.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Self-interacting Elko dark matter with an axis of locality
This communication is a natural and nontrivial continuation of the 2005 work
of Ahluwalia and Grumiller on Elko. Here we report that Elko breaks Lorentz
symmetry in a rather subtle and unexpected way by containing a `hidden'
preferred direction. Along this preferred direction, a quantum field based on
Elko enjoys locality. In the form reported here, Elko offers a mass dimension
one fermionic dark matter with a quartic self-interaction and a preferred axis
of locality. The locality result crucially depends on a judicious choice of

Measurement of quasi-elastic 12C(p,2p) scattering at high momentum transfer
We measured the high-momentum quasi-elastic 12C(p,2p) reaction (at center of
mass angle near 90 degrees) for 6 and 7.5 GeV/c incident protons. The
three-momentum components of both final state protons were measured and the
missing energy and momentum of the target proton in the nucleus were
determined.
The validity of the quasi-elastic picture was verified up to Fermi momenta of
about 450 MeV/c, where it might be questionable. Transverse and longitudinal
Fermi momentum distributions of the target proton were measured and compared to
independent particle models which do not reproduce the large momentum tails. We
also observed that the transverse Fermi distribution gets wider as the
longitudinal component increases in the beam direction, in contrast to a simple
Fermi gas model.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figure
Alternative Signature of TeV Strings
In string theory, it is well known that any hard scattering amplitude
inevitably suffers exponential suppression. We demonstrate that, if the string
scale is M_s < 2TeV, this intrinsically stringy behavior leads to a dramatic
reduction in the QCD jet production rate with very high transverse momenta p_T
> 2TeV at LHC. This suppression is sufficient to be observed in the first year
of low-luminosity running. Our prediction is based on the universal behavior of
string theory, and therefore is qualitatively model-independent. This signature
is alternative and complementary to conventional ones such as Regge resonance

Noncyclic geometric phase for neutrino oscillation
We provide explicit formulae for the noncyclic geometric phases or
Pancharatnam phases of neutrino oscillations. Since Pancharatnam phase is a
generalization of the Berry phase, our results generalize the previous findings
for Berry phase in a recent paper [Phys. Lett. B, 466 (1999) 262]. Unlike the
Berry phase, the noncyclic geometric phase offers distinctive advantage in
terms of measurement and prediction. In particular, for three-flavor mixing,
our explicit formula offers an alternative means of determining the
CP-violating phase. Our results can also be extended easily to explore
geometric phase associated with neutron-antineutron oscillations
On the phenomenology of a Z' coupling only to third-family fermions
The phenomenology of an additional U(1) neutral gauge boson Z' coupled to the
third family of fermions is discussed. One might expect such a particle to
contribute to processes where taus, b and t quarks are produced. Precision data
from LEP1 put severe constraints on the mixing and heavy-boson mass. We find
that the effects of such a particle could not be observed at hadronic
colliders, be it at the Tevatron or the LHC, because of the QCD background. At
LEP2 and future e^+e^- linear colliders, one could instead hope to observe such
