Physico-chemical characteristics of main pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cultivars grown in Dalmatia region of Croatia
Consumers are increasingly expecting the fruits to be tasty and attractive while being safe and healthful. We determined the external and internal fruit quality properties of main pomegranate cultivars widely grown in Croatia. Of the three cultivars, ‘Pastun’ produced the biggest fruits (460 g) followed by ‘Konjski zub’ as 309 g and ‘Ciparski’ as 341 g. Cultivars exhibited a range of fl avor (from sour to sweet) and acidity (0.9 to 4.3% in juice). Aril colour of ‘Ciparski’ and ‘Pastun’ were red while ‘Konjski zub’ had light pink aril colour. ‘Pastun’ had the highest soluble solids and acidity in both fruit juice and peel. ‘Ciparski’ was in high for total anthocyanins content (12.8 mg of cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside equivalents per 100 g of fresh mass) while ‘Pastun’ is high for total phenolics content (144.7 mg gallic acid equivalent per 100 g fresh mass) in juice. Our results indicated that there were important quality differences among pomegranate cultivars grown in Croatia
CHOICE OF PLANTS FOR ROOF GARDENS
A shallow growing medium, draught, wind, high temperatures and bad drainage are conditions in which only rare plant species can grow. The goal of this paper is to highlight and describe plant species that can survive and grow on roofs and match criteria of maintenance and aesthetics at the same time
Anthropogenetical Analysis of Abnormal Human -globin Gene Cluster Arrangement on Chromosome 16*
An earlier study of human globin gene polymorphism in two Adriatic islands of Olib and Silba showed an abnormal arrangement of _ -globin genes in two different individuals. The next step was to determine the degree of the kinship relationship between the two probands, one with a deleted and another with triplicated _ -globin gene on the island Silba, and to determine the stability of this disorder through generations. We reviewed the parish registers (Status Animarum) of the island of Silba, dating from the year 1527, and constructed family trees for the two probands. Restriction endonuclease mapping was performed to study the arrangement of the _ -globin genes in the offspring of our probands. A total of 183 ancestors completed the two family trees. The kinship relationship between them was established in the 5th, 6th, and 7th generation. The analysis of _ -globin genes in the offspring of our probands showed the triplicated _ -globin genes in two persons. We also found _ -globin gene triplication in other three relatives. We did not find any deleted _ -globin genes. We determined the kinship relationship between the two probands, one with deleted and the other with triplicated _ -globin genes. This finding enabled us to determine the stability of this gene disarrangement through generations. It also showed new possibilities in anthropogenetic research, by combining the analyses of parish registers with those of modern genetic methods, such as restriction endonuclease mapping
Heat shock protein gp96 and CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocytes expression as prognostic factors in various molecular types of invasive breast carcinoma
Breast carcinoma shows extensive clinical and molecular heterogenicity. Glycoprotein gp96 is considered a negative prognostic and predictive factor. Controversy exists over the prognostic role of tumor lymphocytic infiltrates. The goal of this study is to illustrate differences in gp96 and CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocytes expression among all immunohistochemical groups of breast carcinoma in relation to the clinical course and outcome of the disease. A retrospective observational study was conducted through processing and analysis of 152 female patient tissue samples previously classified by immunohistochemistry. After immunohistochemical processing, the samples were microscopically analyzed and positive cells were manually calculated in the entire biopsy sample for each patient. In the group of patients with triple negative carcinoma, a significantly higher number of CD4 positive cells in patients with no local recurrence were proven, as well as a significant correlation between a smaller number of CD4 positive cells with a lethal outcome. In the group of patients with Luminal B HER2+ carcinoma, a significantly higher proportion of CD8+ cells in patients with local recurrence were demonstrated. The highest glycoprotein gp96 expression was demonstrated in the group of patients with triple negative carcinoma, while the lowest in patients with Luminal A and Luminal B HER2– carcinoma. This study has shown significantly higher gp96 expression and higher extent of tumor lymphocytic infiltrate in more malignant types of breast carcinoma and represents a significant contribution in affirmation of the prognostic role of these variables
