Ordering in Heisenberg Spin Glasses
For five different Heisenberg spin glass systems, torque experiments were
performed in applied magnetic fields up to . The Dzyaloshinski-Moriya
random anisotropy strengths, the in-field torque onset temperatures, and the
torque relaxation were measured. Critical exponents were estimated
independently using a standard protocol. The data are strong evidence for a
true spin glass ordered state which survives under high applied magnetic
fields; they can be interpreted consistently in terms of a chiral ordering
model with replica symmetry breaking as proposed by Kawamura and coworkers.Comment: 4 pages 4 figures. Revised version accepted by PR
Dna2p Helicase/Nuclease Is a Tracking Protein, Like FEN1, for Flap Cleavage during Okazaki Fragment Maturation
During cellular DNA replication the lagging strand is generated as discontinuous segments called Okazaki fragments. Each contains an initiator RNA primer that is removed prior to joining of the strands. Primer removal in eukaryotes requires displacement of the primer into a flap that is cleaved off by flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1). FEN1 employs a unique tracking mechanism that requires the recognition of the free 5' terminus and then movement to the base of the flap for cleavage. Abnormally long flaps are coated by replication protein A (RPA), inhibiting FEN1 cleavage. A second nuclease, Dna2p, is needed to cleave an RPA-coated flap producing a short RPA-free flap, favored by FEN1. Here we show that Dna2p is also a tracking protein. Annealed primers or conjugated biotin-streptavidin complex block Dna2p entry and movement. Single-stranded binding protein-coated flaps inhibit Dna2p cleavage. Like FEN1, Dna2p can track over substrates with a non-Watson Crick base, such as a biotin, or a missing base within a chain. Unlike FEN1, Dna2p shows evidence of a "threading-like" mechanism that does not support tracking over a branched substrate. We propose that the two nucleases both track, Dna2p first and then FEN1, to remove initiator RNA via long flap intermediates
Prebiotic, Probiotic, and Synbiotic Supplementation in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Gut dysbiosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Restoring gut microbiota with prebiotic, probiotic, and synbiotic supplementation has emerged as a potential therapeutic intervention but has not been systematically evaluated in the CKD population. This is a systematic review. A structured search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the International Clinical Trials Register Search Portal was conducted for articles published since inception until July 2017. Included studies were randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of prebiotic, probiotic, and/or synbiotic supplementation (>1\ua0week) on uremic toxins, microbiota profile, and clinical and patient-centered outcomes in adults and children with CKD.Sixteen studies investigating 645 adults met the inclusion criteria; 5 investigated prebiotics, 6 probiotics, and 5 synbiotics. The quality of the studies (Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) ranged from moderate to very low. Prebiotic, probiotic, and synbiotic supplementation may have led to little or no difference in serum urea (9 studies, 345 participants: mean difference [MD] -0.30\ua0mmol/L, 95% confidence interval [CI] -2.20 to 1.61, P\ua0=\ua0.76, I\ua0=\ua053%), indoxyl sulfate (4 studies, 144 participants: MD -0.02\ua0mg/dL, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.05, P\ua0=\ua0.61, I\ua0=\ua00%), and p-cresyl sulfate (4 studies, 144 participants: MD -0.13\ua0mg/dL, 95% CI -0.41 to 0.15, P\ua0=\ua0.35, I\ua0=\ua00%). Prebiotic supplementation may have slightly reduced serum urea concentration (4 studies, 105 participants: MD -2.23\ua0mmol/L, 95% CI -3.83 to -0.64, P\ua0=\ua0.006, I\ua0=\ua011). Of the 2 studies investigating microbiota changes, synbiotic interventions significantly increased Bifidobacterium. Supplement effects on clinical outcomes were uncertain. There is limited evidence to support the use of prebiotics, probiotics, and/or synbiotics in CKD management

Rapid Manufacturing of Silicon Carbide Composites
From the earliest days of SFF technology development, a viable technique for the direct
manufacture of fully-functional parts has been a major technology goal. While direct metal
methods have been demonstrated for a variety of metals including aluminum, steel and titanium,
they have not reached wide commercial application due to processing speed, final material
properties and surface finish. In this paper the development of an SLS-based rapid
manufacturing (RM) platform is reviewed. The core of this platform is a thermosetting binder
system for preform parts in contrast to the thermoplastic materials currently available for SLS.
The preforms may include metal and/or ceramic powders. A variety of fully functional parts
can be prepared from different combinations of materials and post processing steps including
binder pyrolysis, free-standing alloy infiltration, room temperature polymer infiltration and
machining. The main issues of these steps are reviewed followed by a discussion about the
support of RM. This paper is an intermediate report additional materials, applications, process
models and product design strategies will be incorporated into the project in the next year.Mechanical Engineerin

SLS Materials Development Method for Rapid Manufacturing
As soon as SFF technology development began to make Rapid Prototyping possible the
interest in Rapid Manufacturing (RM) began to grow. The advantages in terms of
functional integration, elimination of tooling and fixtures and mass customization make a
compelling case for RM, leading some in the field to call it the next industrial revolution.
Yet without the materials properties necessary to provide the function and variety
currently available from mass production methods, the application of RM will remain
limited. Developing new materials for the SLS process, one immediate step toward a
larger portfolio of RM materials, is very challenging. The formation of high quality SLS
parts relies on appropriate powder characteristics, thermal cycles and sintering behavior.
Based on a brief examination of the key factors in SLS processing and a research project
to develop a new binder material for Silicon Carbide composites, a systematic materials
development method is proposed in this paper. The method provides guidance for
introducing new SLS materials, support for educating new SLS users and researchers and
direction for several future research projects.Mechanical Engineerin
