    An enamel-painted glass bottle from a “Turkish pit” in Buda

    The fragments of a high quality, enamel painted, blue glass bottle with the date 1671 on its shoulder were found in the Castle District of Buda, in a huge pit dated to the period of the Ottoman occupation. The shape of the object shows eastern influences, while its decoration is clearly western. The origin of the bottle is probably Transylvanian, based on its characteristics and a small group of parallels

    The AdHOC study of older adults’ adherence to medication in 11 countries

    BACKGROUND: Compared with the resources expended developing, evaluating and making clinical decisions about prescribing medication, we know little about what determines whether people take it. Older adults are prescribed more medication than any other group. Poor adherence is a common reason for nonresponse to medication. OBJECTIVES: To investigate cross-nationally the impact of demographic, psychiatric (including cognitive), physical health, behavioural and medication factors on adherence to medication in older adults. METHODS: Researchers interviewed 3881 people over 65 who receive home care services using a structured interview at participants’ places of residence in eleven countries. The main outcome measure was the percentage participants not adherent to medication. RESULTS: 12.5% (n= 456) of people reported they were not fully adherent to medication. Non-adherence was predicted by problem drinking (OR=3.6), not having a doctor review medication (OR=3.3), dementia (OR=1.4 for every one point increase in impairment), good physical health (OR=1.2), resisting care (OR=2.1) being married (OR=2.3) and living in the Czech Republic (OR=4.7) or Germany (OR=1.4). CONCLUSION: People, who screen positive for problem drinking and with dementia, often undiagnosed are less likely to adhere to medication. Therefore doctors should consider dementia and problem drinking when prescribing for older adults. Interventions to improve adherence in older adults might be more effective if 4 targeted at these groups. It is possible that medication review enhances adherence, by improving the patient-doctor relationship, or by emphasising the relevance of medications

    Advanced digital technologies broadly penetrate self-activities, such as algorithms, machine learning, or artificial intelligence. This trend is most evident on social media, where contents, attitudes and evaluative judgments meet on technology-driven platforms. Moreover, human networks also started communicating with social bots or conversational interfaces. All these challenges can trigger a redesign of self-concept via technology. Therefore, the paper investigates how social media machines affect self-concept-related academic research. First, pioneers of the field are presented. Second, the self-concept research in digital technology and social media is summarised. Topic networks illustrate critical research fields with the latest trends and future implications. Last but not least, we also investigate how emerging media phenomena affect academic trends in the case of social bots or fake news. The study aims to support the connected research in psychology, business, management, education, political science, medicine and media studies with an understanding of the latest trends. The additional goal is to highlight the potential of market-based research cooperation with academia supporting significant developments and funding

    Nanocomposite-based dual enzyme system for broad-spectrum scavenging of reactive oxygen species

    A broad-spectrum reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging hybrid material (CASCADE) was developed by sequential adsorption of heparin (HEP) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL) polyelectrolytes together with superoxide dismutase (SOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) antioxidant enzymes on layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoclay support. The synthetic conditions were optimized so that CASCADE possessed remarkable structural (no enzyme leakage) and colloidal (excellent resistance against salt-induced aggregation) stability. The obtained composite was active in decomposition of both superoxide radical anions and hydrogen peroxide in biochemical assays revealing that the strong electrostatic interaction with the functionalized support led to high enzyme loadings, nevertheless, it did not interfere with the native enzyme conformation. In vitro tests demonstrated that ROS generated in human cervical adenocarcinoma cells were successfully consumed by the hybrid material. The cellular uptake was not accompanied with any toxicity effects, which makes the developed CASCADE a promising candidate for treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases

    IP3 receptor isoforms differently regulate ER-mitochondrial contacts and local calcium transfer

    Contact sites of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria locally convey calcium signals between the IP3 receptors (IP3R) and the mitochondrial calcium uniporter, and are central to cell survival. It remains unclear whether IP3Rs also have a structural role in contact formation and whether the different IP3R isoforms have redundant functions. Using an IP3R-deficient cell model rescued with each of the three IP3R isoforms and an array of super-resolution and ultrastructural approaches we demonstrate that IP3Rs are required for maintaining ER-mitochondrial contacts. This role is independent of calcium fluxes. We also show that, while each isoform can support contacts, type 2 IP3R is the most effective in delivering calcium to the mitochondria. Thus, these studies reveal a non-canonical, structural role for the IP3Rs and direct attention towards the type 2 IP3R that was previously neglected in the context of ER-mitochondrial calcium signaling
