Resonant tunneling of interacting electrons in a one-dimensional wire
We consider the conductance of a one-dimensional wire interrupted by a
double-barrier structure allowing for a resonant level. Using the
electron-electron interaction strength as a small parameter, we are able to
build a non-perturbative analytical theory of the conductance valid in a broad
region of temperatures and for a variety of the barrier parameters. We find
that the conductance may have a non-monotonic crossover dependence on
temperature, specific for a resonant tunneling in an interacting electron
system.Comment: 4 pages. 2 figure
Current perpendicular to plane Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) in laminated nanostructures
We theoretically studied spin dependent electron transport
perpendicular-to-plain (CPP) in magnetic laminated multilayered structures by
using Kubo formalism. We took into account not only bulk scattering, but the
interface resistance due to both specular and diffuse reflection and also spin
conserving and spin-flip processes. It was shown that spin-flip scattering at
interfaces substantially reduces the value of GMR. This can explain the
experimental observations that the CPP GMR ratio for laminated structures only
slightly increases as compared to non-laminated ones despite lamination induces
a significant increase in CPP resistance.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Nonlinear screening and ballistic transport in a graphene p-n junction
We study the charge density distribution, the electric field profile, and the
resistance of an electrostatically created lateral p-n junction in graphene. We
show that the electric field at the interface of the electron and hole regions
is strongly enhanced due to limited screening capacity of Dirac quasiparticles.
Accordingly, the junction resistance is lower than estimated in previous
literature.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. (v1) Original version (v2) Introduction largely

Quantum Hall line junction with impurities as a multi-slit Luttinger liquid interferometer
We report on quantum interference between a pair of counterpropagating
quantum Hall edge states that are separated by a high quality tunnel barrier.
Observed Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are analyzed in terms of resonant tunneling
between coupled Luttinger liquids that creates bound electronic states between
pairs of tunnel centers that act like interference slits. We place a lower
bound in the range of 20-40 m for the phase coherence length and directly
confirm the extended phase coherence of quantum Hall edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Zero-bias Anomaly of Tunneling into the Edge of a 2D Electron System
We investigate the electron tunneling into the edge of a clean weakly
interacting two-dimensional electron gas. It is shown that the corresponding
differential conductance has a cusp at zero bias, and is characterized
by a universal slope at . This singularity originates from the
electron scattering on the Friedel oscillation caused by the boundary of the
system.Comment: 10 pages, uuencoded compressed Postscript file, to appear in Phys.

Magnetically-controlled impurities in quantum wires with strong Rashba coupling
We investigate the effect of strong spin-orbit interaction on the electronic
transport through non-magnetic impurities in one-dimensional systems. When a
perpendicular magnetic field is applied, the electron spin polarization becomes
momentum-dependent and spin-flip scattering appears, to first order in the
applied field, in addition to the usual potential scattering. We analyze a
situation in which, by tuning the Fermi level and the Rashba coupling, the
magnetic field can suppress the potential scattering. This mechanism should
give rise to a significant negative magnetoresistance in the limit of large
barriers.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Hydrogenic Spin Quantum Computing in Silicon: A Digital Approach
We suggest an architecture for quantum computing with spin-pair encoded
qubits in silicon. Electron-nuclear spin-pairs are controlled by a dc magnetic
field and electrode-switched on and off hyperfine interaction. This digital
processing is insensitive to tuning errors and easy to model. Electron
shuttling between donors enables multi-qubit logic. These hydrogenic spin
qubits are transferable to nuclear spin-pairs, which have long coherence times,
and electron spin-pairs, which are ideally suited for measurement and
initialization. The architecture is scalable to highly parallel operation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; refereed and published version with improved

Cascade of Quantum Phase Transitions in Tunnel-Coupled Edge States
We report on the cascade of quantum phase transitions exhibited by
tunnel-coupled edge states across a quantum Hall line junction. We identify a
series of quantum critical points between successive strong and weak tunneling
regimes in the zero-bias conductance. Scaling analysis shows that the
conductance near the critical magnetic fields is a function of a single
scaling argument , where the exponent .
This puzzling resemblance to a quantum Hall-insulator transition points to
importance of interedge correlation between the coupled edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Microlensing Binaries with Candidate Brown Dwarf Companions
Brown dwarfs are important objects because they may provide a missing link between stars and planets, two populations that have dramatically different formation histories. In this paper, we present the candidate binaries with brown dwarf companions that are found by analyzing binary microlensing events discovered during the 2004-2011 observation seasons. Based on the low mass ratio criterion of q < 0.2, we found seven candidate events: OGLE-2004-BLG-035, OGLE-2004-BLG-039, OGLE-2007-BLG-006, OGLE-2007-BLG-399/MOA-2007-BLG-334, MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172, MOA-2011-BLG-149, and MOA-201-BLG-278/OGLE-2011-BLG-012N. Among them, we are able to confirm that the companions of the lenses of MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149 are brown dwarfs by determining the mass of the lens based on the simultaneous measurement of the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured masses of the brown dwarf companions are 0.02 ± 0.01 M_☉ and 0.019 ± 0.002 M_☉ for MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149, respectively, and both companions are orbiting low-mass M dwarf host stars. More microlensing brown dwarfs are expected to be detected as the number of lensing events with well-covered light curves increases with new-generation searches
