Comparing resolved-sideband cooling and measurement-based feedback cooling on an equal footing: analytical results in the regime of ground-state cooling
We show that in the regime of ground-state cooling, simple expressions can be
derived for the performance of resolved-sideband cooling --- an example of
coherent feedback control --- and optimal linear measurement-based feedback
cooling for a harmonic oscillator. These results are valid to leading order in
the small parameters that define this regime. They provide insight into the
origins of the limitations of coherent and measurement-based feedback for
linear systems, and the relationship between them. These limitations are not
fundamental bounds imposed by quantum mechanics, but are due to the fact that
both cooling methods are restricted to use only a linear interaction with the
resonator. We compare the performance of the two methods on an equal footing
--- that is, for the same interaction strength --- and confirm that coherent
feedback is able to make much better use of the linear interaction than
measurement-based feedback. We find that this performance gap is caused not by
the back-action noise of the measurement but by the projection noise. We also
obtain simple expressions for the maximal cooling that can be obtained by both

Structure of Polymer Brushes in Cylindrical Tubes: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation
Molecular Dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained bead-spring model of
flexible macromolecules tethered with one end to the surface of a cylindrical
pore are presented. Chain length and grafting density are varied
over a wide range and the crossover from ``mushroom'' to ``brush'' behavior is
studied for three pore diameters. The monomer density profile and the
distribution of the free chain ends are computed and compared to the
corresponding model of polymer brushes at flat substrates. It is found that
there exists a regime of and for large enough pore diameter where
the brush height in the pore exceeds the brush height on the flat substrate,
while for large enough and (and small enough pore diameters) the
opposite behavior occurs, i.e. the brush is compressed by confinement. These
findings are used to discuss the corresponding theories on polymer brushes at

Two types of electron events in solar flares
The fluxes and spectra of the flare electrons measured on board Venera-I3 and I4 space probes are compared with the parameters of the hard (E sub x approximately 55 keV) and thermal X-ray bursts. The electron flux amplitude has been found to correlate with flare importance in the thermal X-ray range (r approximately 0.8). The following two types of flare events have been found in the electron component of SCR. The electron flux increase is accompanied by a hard X-ray burst and the electron spectrum index in the approximately 25 to 200 keV energy range is gamma approximately 2 to 3. The electron flux increase is not accompanied by a hard X-ray burst and the electron spectrum is softer (Delta gamma approximately 0.7 to 1.0)
Astroglial-axonal interactions during early stages of myelination in mixed cultures using in vitro and ex vivo imaging techniques
<b>Background</b><p></p>
Myelination is a very complex process that requires the cross talk between various neural cell types. Previously, using cytosolic or membrane associated GFP tagged neurospheres, we followed the interaction of oligodendrocytes with axons using time-lapse imaging in vitro and ex vivo and demonstrated dynamic changes in cell morphology. In this study we focus on GFP tagged astrocytes differentiated from neurospheres and their interactions with axons.<p></p>
<b>Results</b><p></p>
We show the close interaction of astrocyte processes with axons and with oligodendrocytes in mixed mouse spinal cord cultures with formation of membrane blebs as previously seen for oligodendrocytes in the same cultures. When GFP-tagged neurospheres were transplanted into the spinal cord of the dysmyelinated shiverer mouse, confirmation of dynamic changes in cell morphology was provided and a prevalence for astrocyte differentiation compared with oligodendroglial differentiation around the injection site. Furthermore, we were able to image GFP tagged neural cells in vivo after transplantation and the cells exhibited similar membrane changes as cells visualised in vitro and ex vivo.<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b><p></p>
These data show that astrocytes exhibit dynamic cell process movement and changes in their membrane topography as they interact with axons and oligodendrocytes during the process of myelination, with the first demonstration of bleb formation in astrocytes
Stretching single polysaccharide molecules using AFM: A potential method for the investigation of the intermolecular uronate distribution of alginate?
Illustrative examples of the way in which the molecular force-extension behaviour of polysaccharides is governed by the nature of the linkage between their constituent pyranose rings are presented for a series of standard homopolymers. These results agree with previously proposed general hypotheses regarding the possibility of generating force-induced conformational transitions, and with the predictions of a model in which the inter-conversion of pyranose conformers is assumed to be an equilibrium process on the timescale of the molecular stretching. Subsequently, we investigate the potential of the technique in the characterisation of co-polymeric polysaccharides in which the nature of the glycan linkages is different between the two distinct residue types. Specifically, we explore the possibility that the ratio of mannuronic acid (M) to guluronic acid (G) in alginate chains will be reflected in their single molecule stretching behaviour, owing to their contrasting equatorial and axial linkages. Furthermore, as the technique described interrogates the sample one polymer at a time we outline the promise of, and the obstacles to, obtaining a new level of characterisation using this methodology where differences observed in the single molecule stretching curves obtained from single alginate samples reflectsomething of the real intermolecular distribution of the M / G ratio
