A balanced homodyne detector for high-rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state quantum key distribution
We discuss excess noise contributions of a practical balanced homodyne
detector in Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) quantum key distribution
(QKD). We point out the key generated from the original realistic model of GMCS
QKD may not be secure. In our refined realistic model, we take into account
excess noise due to the finite bandwidth of the homodyne detector and the
fluctuation of the local oscillator. A high speed balanced homodyne detector
suitable for GMCS QKD in the telecommunication wavelength region is built and
experimentally tested. The 3dB bandwidth of the balanced homodyne detector is
found to be 104MHz and its electronic noise level is 13dB below the shot noise
at a local oscillator level of 8.5*10^8 photon per pulse. The secure key rate
of a GMCS QKD experiment with this homodyne detector is expected to reach
Mbits/s over a few kilometers.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure
Implementation of two-party protocols in the noisy-storage model
The noisy-storage model allows the implementation of secure two-party
protocols under the sole assumption that no large-scale reliable quantum
storage is available to the cheating party. No quantum storage is thereby
required for the honest parties. Examples of such protocols include bit
commitment, oblivious transfer and secure identification. Here, we provide a
guideline for the practical implementation of such protocols. In particular, we
analyze security in a practical setting where the honest parties themselves are
unable to perform perfect operations and need to deal with practical problems
such as errors during transmission and detector inefficiencies. We provide
explicit security parameters for two different experimental setups using weak
coherent, and parametric down conversion sources. In addition, we analyze a

Distorted HI Gas in the Widely Separated LIRG Arp 256
We present new interferometric HI and CO (1-0) observations of the luminous
infrared source, Arp 256. Arp 256 consists of two spiral galaxies in an early
stage of merging, with a projected nuclear separation of 29 kpc (54") and an
infrared luminosity of 2.0E11 L_sun. Despite the large separation of the
galaxies' nuclei and mildly disrupted stellar components, the HI disks are
found to be strongly disrupted, and the southern galaxy in Arp 256 shows an
elevated star formation efficiency, which is consistent with a nuclear
starburst. Both of these results run contrary to expectations, posing
interesting questions on the physical mechanisms involved in stimulating star

The Megamaser Cosmology Project. III. Accurate Masses of Seven Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galaxies with Circumnuclear Megamaser Disks
Observations of HO masers from circumnuclear disks in active galaxies for
the Megamaser Cosmology Project allow accurate measurement of the mass of
supermassive black holes (BH) in these galaxies. We present the Very Long
Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) images and kinematics of water maser emission in
six active galaxies: NGC~1194, NGC~2273, NGC~2960 (Mrk~1419), NGC~4388,
NGC~6264 and NGC~6323. We use the Keplerian rotation curves of these six
megamaser galaxies, plus a seventh previously published, to determine accurate
enclosed masses within the central pc of these galaxies, smaller than
the radius of the sphere of influence of the central mass in all cases. We also
set lower limits to the central mass densities of between 0.12 and 60 ~pc. For six of the seven disks, the high central
densities rule out clusters of stars or stellar remnants as the central
objects, and this result further supports our assumption that the enclosed mass
can be attributed predominantly to a supermassive black hole. The seven BHs
have masses ranging between 0.76 and 6.510. The BH mass
errors are \%, dominated by the uncertainty of the Hubble constant.
We compare the megamaser BH mass determination with other BH mass measurement
techniques. The BH mass based on virial estimation in four galaxies is
consistent with the megamaser BH mass given the latest empirical value of
, but the virial mass uncertainty is much greater. MCP
observations continue and we expect to obtain more maser BH masses in the

High Resolution Studies of Star-Forming Molecular Clouds
Observations of star formation sites in a number of molecular clouds, including NGC 7538, NGC 2071, Cepheus A and K3-50A, have been made using the Owens Valley millimeter wave interferometer. The measurements of ^(12)CO, ^(13)CO, CS and continuum emission are at resolutions of order 7″. Continuum emission at 2.7 mm is detected from all the cloud cores and, in general, the ^(12)CO interferometer maps reveal the presence of high velocity, bipolar outflows within 10″ of these continuum sources. Thus, the origins of the outflows are readily identifiable; the flows themselves appear to remain collimated on scales of less than 10^(17) cm. The orientations of the flows are similar to those seen at lower resolution, except in Cepheus A, where the interferometer is capable of distinguishing between two outflows which are confused in single telescope maps
Transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolic changes in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves after the onset of illumination
BACKGROUND: Light plays an important role in plant growth and development. In this study, the impact of light on physiology of 20-d-old Arabidopsis leaves was examined through transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic analysis. Since the energy-generating electron transport chains in chloroplasts and mitochondria are encoded by both nuclear and organellar genomes, sequencing total RNA after removal of ribosomal RNAs provides essential information on transcription of organellar genomes. The changes in the levels of ADP, ATP, NADP(+), NADPH and 41 metabolites upon illumination were also quantified. RESULTS: Upon illumination, while the transcription of the genes encoded by the plastid genome did not change significantly, the transcription of nuclear genes encoding different functional complexes in the photosystem are differentially regulated whereas members of the same complex are co-regulated with each other. The abundance of mRNAs and proteins encoded by all three genomes are, however, not always positively correlated. One such example is the negative correlation between mRNA and protein abundances of the photosystem components, which reflects the importance of post-transcriptional regulation in plant physiology. CONCLUSION: This study provides systems-wide datasets which allow plant researchers to examine the changes in leaf transcriptomes, proteomes and key metabolites upon illumination and to determine whether there are any correlations between changes in transcript and protein abundances of a particular gene or pathway upon illumination. The integration of data of the organelles and the photosystems, Calvin-Benson cycle, carbohydrate metabolism, glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle and respiratory chain, thereby provides a more complete picture to the changes in plant physiology upon illumination than has been attained to date.published_or_final_versio
CO (2–1) observations of Maffei 2
Maffei 2 is a highly obscured galaxy, probably of type Sbc, at a distance of 5 Mpc (Allen and Raimond 1972; Spinrad et al. 1973). Since it lies close to the Galactic plane, there is considerable confusion in infrared and 21-cm HI observations due to Galactic emission, but investigations of its structure can be carried out at millimeter wavelengths where the Galaxy contribution is confined to a limited velocity range. The high resolution (30″) of our CO J=2–1 observations permits both a detailed examination of Maffei 2 and a study of the nature of the gas in its nucleus, through comparison with the CO J=1–0 observations
Constitutional activation of IL-6-mediated JAK/STAT pathway through hypermethylation of SOCS-1 in human gastric cancer cell line
The interleukin-mediated Janus kinase (JAK)/STAT pathway plays a crucial role in carcinogenesis. Recently, increased STAT3 activity was found in hepatocellular carcinoma and multiple myeloma in which there was silencing of SOCS-1 (suppressor of cytokine signalling-1) by gene promoter hypermethylation. We investigated the expression level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and SOCS-1 in gastric cancer cell lines. Expression of SOCS-1 correlated with IL-6 level in most of the cell lines, except for AGS cells in which SOCS-1 was absent despite a high level of IL-6 production. Methylation analysis by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction and bisulphite sequencing revealed that CpG island of SOCS-1 was densely methylated in AGS cells. Demethylation treatment by 5′azadeoxycytidine restored SOCS-1 expression and also suppressed constitutive STAT3 phosphorylation in AGS cells. Moreover, methylation of SOCS-1 was detected in 27.5% (11 of 40) of primary gastric tumours samples, 10% (one of 10) of adjacent noncancer tissues but not in any (zero of nine) normal gastric mucosa. Methylation of SOCS-1 also correlated with the loss of mRNA expression in some primary gastric cancers. In conclusion, this is the first report to demonstrate that hypermethylation of SOCS-1 led to gene silencing in gastric cancer cell line and primary tumour samples. Downregulation of SOCS-1 cooperates with IL-6 in the activation of JAK/STAT pathway in gastric cancer. © 2004 Cancer Research UK.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
Key distillation from quantum channels using two-way communication protocols
We provide a general formalism to characterize the cryptographic properties
of quantum channels in the realistic scenario where the two honest parties
employ prepare and measure protocols and the known two-way communication
reconciliation techniques. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition to
distill a secret key using this type of schemes for Pauli qubit channels and
generalized Pauli channels in higher dimension. Our results can be applied to
standard protocols such as BB84 or six-state, giving a critical error rate of
20% and 27.6%, respectively. We explore several possibilities to enlarge these
bounds, without any improvement. These results suggest that there may exist
weakly entangling channels useless for key distribution using prepare and
