Respiratory arrest in a child after flushing of pancuronium from the dead space of intravenous cannula

    Get PDF
It is common practice for patients admitted to Intensive Care Units to have indwelling intravenous cannulae. Sometimes these cannulae are used only for the administration of drugs and are closed otherwise. Residual drugs in the deadspace of these intravenous cannulae as well as connected stoppers or 3-way stopcocks can later be flushed unknowingly. We would like to report a case in which inadvertent flushing of residual pancuronium caused complete muscle paralysis and respiratory arrest in a young child

The effect of thermal exposure on the mechanical properties of aluminum-graphite composites

The mechanical properties of aluminum-graphite composites were measured at room temperature in the as-received condition, after elevated temperature exposure and after thermal cycling. The composites were fabricated by solid-state diffusion bonding of liquid-phase Al-infiltrated Thornel 50 fibers. The results showed that the maximum longitudinal tensile strength of the as-received material was 80,000 psi, which corresponds well with the rule of mixture value. The composite strength was observed to vary widely, depending on the extent of wetting of the fibers by the aluminum. The strength of the composites in the transverse direction was generally very low, due to poor interfacial bonding. Aluminum carbide (Al4C3) formed at the surface of the fibers at temperatures greater than 500 C. Development of the carbide was shown to be diffusion-controlled and was dependent on the time and temperature used. It was shown that the tensile strength was virtually unaffected by heat-treatment up to 500 C; beyond that temperature a drastic degradation of tensile strength occurred. Thermal cycling of the composites below 500 C resulted in an observable degradation of the composite strength

Uso de los marcadores moleculares para el análisis de biodiversidad de los animales salvajes: una breve revisión

    Get PDF
These markers are mainly classified into two types; mitochondrial and nuclear markers. The widely used mitochondrial DNA markers with decreasing order of conserved sequences are 12S rDNA < 16S rDNA < cytochrome b < control region (CR); thus the 12S rDNA is highly conserved and the CR is highly variable. The most commonly used nuclear markers for DNA fingerprinting include random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and microsatellites. This short review narrates the application of these molecular markers for biodiversity analysis of wildlife animals. Brane Realizations of Quantum Hall Solitons and Kac-Moody Lie Algebras

Using quiver gauge theories in (1+2)-dimensions, we give brane realizations of a class of Quantum Hall Solitons (QHS) embedded in Type IIA superstring on the ALE spaces with exotic singularities. These systems are obtained by considering two sets of wrapped D4-branes on 2-spheres. The space-time on which the QHS live is identified with the world-volume of D4-branes wrapped on a collection of intersecting 2-spheres arranged as extended Dynkin diagrams of Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The magnetic source is given by an extra orthogonal D4-brane wrapping a generic 2-cycle in the ALE spaces. It is shown as well that data on the representations of Kac-Moody Lie algebras fix the filling factor of the QHS. In case of finite Dynkin diagrams, we recover results on QHS with integer and fractional filling factors known in the literature. In case of hyperbolic bilayer models, we obtain amongst others filling factors describing holes in the graphene.Comment: Lqtex; 15 page

Radiative corrections to deep-inelastic eded- scattering. Case of tensor polarized deuteron

The model-independent radiative corrections to deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized electron beam off the tensor polarized deuteron target have been considered. The contribution to the radiative corrections due to the hard-photon emission from the elastic electron-deuteron scattering (the so-called elastic radiative tail) is also investigated. The calculation is based on the covariant parametrization of the deuteron quadrupole polarization tensor. The numerical estimates of the radiative corrections to the polarization observables have been done for the kinematical conditions of the current experiment at HERAComment: 21 pages, 5 figure

Supplemental chromium-loaded chitosan nanoparticles affect growth, serum metabolites and intestinal histology in broilers

The goal of the present research was to evaluate the effects of chromium-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (Cr-CNPs) on production performance, viscera development, serum metabolites and intestinal histology in broilers. Two hundred (200) day-old broilers were randomly divided into five groups with five replicates (n = 8). Birds in the first group served as control and were fed a corn soybean-based diet, while the remaining four supplemented groups were offered 200, 400, 800, and 1200 μg Cr-CNPs/kg of feed, respectively, for 35 days. Weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) remained unaffected with Cr-CNP supplementation. No changes were observed in the relative weights of viscera. The relative length of the small intestine was decreased in birds supplemented with 200 and 800 μg Cr-CNPs/kg compared with the 1200 μg Cr-CNP-supplemented group and control. Serum metabolites remained unaffected with Cr-CNP supplementation except for serum HDL, which was increased. Cr-CNPs decreased the retention of chromium in the bone at higher concentrations. Jejunal villus height, villus surface area, and villus height to crypt depth ratio were increased in the 800 μg Cr-CNP-supplemented group. In conclusion, Cr-CNPs did not affect growth performance, viscera development, and most of the serum metabolites, but enhanced jejunal morphological attributes at 800 μg Cr-CNPs/kg of feed.
