Low relaxation rate in a low-Z alloy of iron
The longest relaxation time and sharpest frequency content in ferromagnetic
precession is determined by the intrinsic (Gilbert) relaxation rate \emph{}.
For many years, pure iron (Fe) has had the lowest known value of for all pure ferromagnetic metals or binary alloys. We show that an
epitaxial iron alloy with vanadium (V) possesses values of which are
significantly reduced, to 355 Mhz at 27% V. The result can be understood
as the role of spin-orbit coupling in generating relaxation, reduced through
the atomic number .Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
High accuracy results for the energy levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, up to J=2
We present a nonrelativistic calculation of the rotation-vibration levels of
the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, relying on the diagonalization of the
exact three-body Hamiltonian. The J=2 levels are obtained with a very high
accuracy of 10^{-14} a.u. (for most levels) representing an improvement by five
orders of magnitude over previous calculations. The accuracy is also improved
for the J=1 levels of H2+ and D2+ with respect to earlier works. Moreover, we
have computed the sensitivities of the energy levels with respect to the mass
ratios, allowing these levels to be used for metrological purposes.Comment: 11 page
-Trinomial identities
We obtain connection coefficients between -binomial and -trinomial
coefficients. Using these, one can transform -binomial identities into a
-trinomial identities and back again. To demonstrate the usefulness of this
procedure we rederive some known trinomial identities related to partition
theory and prove many of the conjectures of Berkovich, McCoy and Pearce, which
have recently arisen in their study of the and
perturbations of minimal conformal field theory.Comment: 21 pages, AMSLate
Evaluation of a ln tan integral arising in quantum field theory
We analytically evaluate a dilogarithmic integral that is prototypical of
volumes of ideal tetrahedra in hyperbolic geometry. We additionally obtain new
representations of the Clausen function Cl_2 and the Catalan constant
G=Cl_2(\pi/2), as well as new relations between sine and Clausen function
values.Comment: 24 pages, no figure
Patient safety in dentistry: development of a candidate 'never event' list for primary care
Introduction The 'never event' concept is often used in secondary care and refers to an agreed list of patient safety incidents that 'should not happen if the necessary preventative measures are in place'. Such an intervention may raise awareness of patient safety issues and inform team learning and system improvements in primary care dentistry.
Objective To identify and develop a candidate never event list for primary care dentistry.
Methods A literature review, eight workshops with dental practitioners and a modified Delphi with 'expert' groups were used to identify and agree candidate never events.
Results Two-hundred and fifty dental practitioners suggested 507 never events, reduced to 27 distinct possibilities grouped across seven themes. Most frequently occurring themes were: 'checking medical history and prescribing' (119, 23.5%) and 'infection control and decontamination' (71, 14%). 'Experts' endorsed nine candidate never event statements with one graded as 'extreme risk' (failure to check past medical history) and four as 'high risk' (for example, extracting wrong tooth).
Conclusion Consensus on a preliminary list of never events was developed. This is the first known attempt to develop this approach and an important step in determining its value to patient safety. Further work is necessary to develop the utility of this method
The Cooling Flow to Accretion Flow Transition
Cooling flows in galaxy clusters and isolated elliptical galaxies are a
source of mass for fueling accretion onto a central supermassive black hole. We
calculate the dynamics of accreting matter in the combined gravitational
potential of a host galaxy and a central black hole assuming a steady state,
spherically symmetric flow (i.e., no angular momentum). The global dynamics
depends primarily on the accretion rate. For large accretion rates, no simple,
smooth transition between a cooling flow and an accretion flow is possible; the
gas cools towards zero temperature just inside its sonic radius, which lies
well outside the region where the gravitational influence of the central black
hole is important. For accretion rates below a critical value, however, the
accreting gas evolves smoothly from a radiatively driven cooling flow at large
radii to a nearly adiabatic (Bondi) flow at small radii. We argue that this is
the relevant parameter regime for most observed cooling flows. The transition
from the cooling flow to the accretion flow should be observable in M87 with
the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}.Comment: emulateapj.sty, 10 pages incl. 5 figures, to appear in Ap
A finite oscillator model related to sl(2|1)
We investigate a new model for the finite one-dimensional quantum oscillator
based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). In this setting, it is natural to
present the position and momentum operators of the oscillator as odd elements
of the Lie superalgebra. The model involves a parameter p (0<p<1) and an
integer representation label j. In the (2j+1)-dimensional representations W_j
of sl(2|1), the Hamiltonian has the usual equidistant spectrum. The spectrum of
the position operator is discrete and turns out to be of the form
, where k=0,1,...,j. We construct the discrete position wave
functions, which are given in terms of certain Krawtchouk polynomials. These
wave functions have appealing properties, as can already be seen from their
plots. The model is sufficiently simple, in the sense that the corresponding
discrete Fourier transform (relating position wave functions to momentum wave
functions) can be constructed explicitly
NGC 1866: First Spectroscopic Detection of Fast Rotating Stars in a Young LMC Cluster
High-resolution spectroscopic observations were taken of 29 extended main
sequence turn-off (eMSTO) stars in the young (200 Myr) LMC cluster, NGC
1866 using the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System and MSpec spectrograph on the
Magellan-Clay 6.5-m telescope. These spectra reveal the first direct detection
of rapidly rotating stars whose presence has only been inferred from
photometric studies. The eMSTO stars exhibit H-alpha emission (indicative of
Be-star decretion disks), others have shallow broad H-alpha absorption
(consistent with rotation 150 km s), or deep H-alpha core
absorption signaling lower rotation velocities (150 km s ).
The spectra appear consistent with two populations of stars - one rapidly
rotating, and the other, younger and slowly rotating.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
