The Onset of Planet Formation in Brown Dwarf Disks
The onset of planet formation in protoplanetary disks is marked by the growth
and crystallization of sub-micron-sized dust grains accompanied by dust
settling toward the disk mid-plane. Here we present infrared spectra of disks
around brown dwarfs and brown dwarf candidates. We show that all three
processes occur in such cool disks in a way similar or identical to that in
disks around low- and intermediate-mass stars. These results indicate that the
onset of planet formation extends to disks around brown dwarfs, suggesting that
planet formation is a robust process occurring in most young circumstellar

Investigation of vertical cavity surface emitting laser dynamics for neuromorphic photonic systems
We report an approach based upon vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) to reproduce optically different behaviors exhibited by biological neurons but on a much faster timescale. The technique proposed is based on the polarization switching and nonlinear dynamics induced in a single VCSEL under polarized optical injection. The particular attributes of VCSELs and the simple experimental configuration used in this work offer prospects of fast, reconfigurable processing elements with excellent fan-out and scaling potentials for use in future computational paradigms and artificial neural networks. © 2012 American Institute of Physics
The First Detailed Look at a Brown Dwarf Disk
The combination of mid-infrared and recent submm/mm measurements allows us to
set up the first comprehensive spectral energy distribution (SED) of the
circumstellar material around a young Brown Dwarf. Simple arguments suggest
that the dust is distributed in the form of a disk. We compare basic models to
explore the disk parameters. The modeling shows that a flat disk geometry fits
well the observations. A flared disk explains the SED only if it has a
puffed-up inner rim and an inner gap much larger than the dust sublimation
radius. Similarities and differences with disks around T Tauri stars are

Bistability patterns and nonlinear switching with very high contrast ratio in a 1550 nm quantum dash semiconductor laser
We report on the experimental observation of optical bistability (OB) and nonlinear switching (NS) in a nanostructure laser; specifically a 1550 nm quantum dash Fabry-Perot laser subject to external optical injection and operated in reflection. Different shapes of optical bistability and nonlinear switching, anticlockwise and clockwise, with very high on-off contrast ratio (up to 180:1) between output states were experimentally measured. These results added to the potential of nanostructure lasers for enhanced performance offer promise for use in fast all-optical signal processing applications in optical networks. © 2012 American Institute of Physics
Universal Features of Terahertz Absorption in Disordered Materials
Using an analytical theory, experimental terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
data and numerical evidence, we demonstrate that the frequency dependence of
the absorption coupling coefficient between far-infrared photons and atomic
vibrations in disordered materials has the universal functional form, C(omega)
= A + B*omega^2, where the material-specific constants A and B are related to
the distributions of fluctuating charges obeying global and local charge

CB17: Inferring the dynamical history of a prestellar core with chemo-dynamical models
We present a detailed theoretical study of the isolated Bok globule CB17
(L1389) based on spectral maps of CS, HCO, CO, CS, and
HCO lines. A phenomenological model of prestellar core evolution, a
time-dependent chemical model, and a radiative transfer simulation for
molecular lines are combined to reconstruct the chemical and kinematical
structure of this core. We developed a general criterion that allows to
quantify the difference between observed and simulated spectral maps. By
minimizing this difference, we find that very high and very low values of the
effective sticking probability are not appropriate for the studied
prestellar core. The most probable value for CB17 is 0.3--0.5. The spatial
distribution of the intensities and self-absorption features of optically thick
lines is indicative of UV irradiation of the core. By fitting simultaneously
optically thin and optically thick transitions, we isolate the model that
reproduces all the available spectral maps to a reasonable accuracy. The line
asymmetry pattern in CB17 is reproduced by a combination of infall, rotation,
and turbulent motions with velocities km s, km
s, and km s, respectively. These parameters corresponds
to energy ratios , , and (the rotation
parameters are determined for ). The chemical age of the core is
about 2 Myrs. In particular, this is indicated by the central depletion of CO,
CS, and HCO. Based on the angular momentum value, we argue that the core is

Variational Multiscale Stabilization and the Exponential Decay of Fine-scale Correctors
This paper addresses the variational multiscale stabilization of standard
finite element methods for linear partial differential equations that exhibit
multiscale features. The stabilization is of Petrov-Galerkin type with a
standard finite element trial space and a problem-dependent test space based on
pre-computed fine-scale correctors. The exponential decay of these correctors
and their localisation to local cell problems is rigorously justified. The
stabilization eliminates scale-dependent pre-asymptotic effects as they appear
for standard finite element discretizations of highly oscillatory problems,
e.g., the poor approximation in homogenization problems or the pollution
effect in high-frequency acoustic scattering
A prospective study of Plasmodium falciparum multiplicity of infection and morbidity in Tanzanian children
Several studies suggest that in individuals with substantial previous exposure to malaria, co-infection with multiple clones of Plasmodium falciparum can protect against subsequent clinical malaria attacks. Other studies, mainly of individuals with little previous exposure, found the converse relationship. To test whether acquisition of such cross-protection tracks the acquisition of clinical immunity in general, 610 Tanzanian children aged 0-6 years were enrolled in a nine-month prospective study of the risk of morbidity in relation to parasitological status and merozoite surface protein 2 genotypes on enrolment. Prevalence of parasitaemia and multiplicity of infection increased with age. In the first year of life, the incidence of clinical malaria was almost three times higher in children with parasites at baseline than in those without. In older children, baseline P. falciparum infections appeared to protect against both parasitaemic and non-parasitaemic fever episodes. In children aged less than three years, baseline multiple infection tended to be associated with higher prospective risk of clinical malaria than single infection while in children aged more than three years the converse was found, but these effects were not statistically significant. These results provide further evidence that relationships between asymptomatic malaria infections and clinical malaria change with cumulative exposur
Investor protection through model case procedures – implementing collective goals and individual rights under the 2012 Amendment of the German Capital Markets Model Case Act (KapMuG)
The German Capital Markets Model Case Act (KapMuG) and its amendment of 2012 highlight some fundamentals of collective redress in civil law countries at the example of model case procedures in the field of investor protection. That is why a survey of the ongoing activities of the European Union in the area of collective redress and of its repercussions on the member state level forms a suitable basis for the following analysis of the 2012 amendment of the KapMuG. It clearly brings into focus a shift from sector-specific regulation with an emphasis on the cross-border aspect of protecting consumers towards a “coherent approach” strengthening the enforcement of EU law. As a result, regulatory policy and collective redress are two sides of the same coin today. With respect to the KapMuG such a development brings about some tension between its aim to aggregate small individual claims as efficiently as possible and the dominant role of individual procedural rights in German civil procedure. This conflict can be illustrated by some specific rules of the KapMuG: its scope of application, the three-tier procedure of a model case procedure, the newly introduced notification of claims and the new opt-out settlement under the amended §§ 17-19
