This paper displays some of the results from research carried out in Andalusia (Spain) to evaluate the impact of the educational innovation policy developed by the regional government through widely introducing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in primary and secondary schools (ICT Centres). Specifically, the effect of the measures used to integrate ICTs on the educational administration and education centres is analysed. This integration is analysed not only at an institutional level, concerning the organization of the centres, but also in that referring to the permanent teacher’s training actions and the implications and repercussions in the teaching-learning processes and the classroom and thus its repercussions in teaching-learning processes

The context of this essay is a research done in Andalusia, as part of the official announcement of the 2004-2007 R&D National Plan to analyse the introduction of free software in the Andalusian ICT centres and its repercussions in the teaching-learning processes. This research is done in an educational reality that progressively has been consolidated in the whole country and also in all the developed countries in the world. This reality is the progressive implementation of technology in the classroom. Now, we will try and expose the context and the base of the research, its development and the most significant results

Surgical treatment of theintersex condition in the dog

Intersexuality is a rare congenital condition that leads to the development of an ambiguous urogenital tract. Removal of the reproductive tract is recommended to avoid genital diseases; however there is scant information about the procedure. The objective of this report is to describe the surgical procedure used to treat the canine intersex condition. Surgical corrections were performed on four intersex dogs: three 78 XX SRY-negative (one bilateral ovotestis, two sertolicell-only syndrome) and one 78 XX SRY-positive (sertolicell-only syndrome). Despite the different genetic and histological features, the anatomical characteristics were similar. The patients presented a vulva that lacked of dorsal fold placed ventrocranially to its anatomically normal position, a hypertrophied os clitoris protruding from the vulva and a urinary opening near to its normal position in the bitch..

Practical study of optical stellar interferometry

In this work we present an observational technique and a detailed analysis of the stellar interferograms produced by three bright stars: Betelgeuse, Rigel and Sirius. It is shown that the atmospheric turbulence is responsible for the reduction of the long-exposure fringe visibility of the obtained interference patterns. By using different baselines in our interferometer, we are able to distinguish the decay of the visibility with the baseline, how different parameters such us the diameter of the holes in our interferometer or their distribution affects the pattern, and to measure the turbulence with the estimation of the Fried parameter r0. The work and methodology are presented as a method for postgraduate students that targets practical learning of optical interferometry in astronomy and how it is affected by several causes, such as the atmospheric turbulence.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, paper submitted and accepted to AJ

The effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and a calcimimetic on extraosseous calcifications in uremic rats

Vitamin D derivatives and calcimimetics are used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. We investigated the effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and the calcimimetic AMG 641 on soft-tissue calcification in uremic rats with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Control and uremic rats were treated with vehicle, calcitriol, paricalcitol, AMG 641, or a combination of AMG 641 plus calcitriol or paricalcitol. Parathyroid hormone levels were reduced by all treatments but were better controlled by the combination of paricalcitol and AMG 641. The calcimimetic alone did not induce extraosseous calcification but co-administration of AMG 641 reduced soft-tissue calcification and aortic mineralization in both calcitriol- and paricalcitol-treated rats. Survival was significantly reduced in rats treated with calcitriol and this mortality was attenuated by co-treatment with AMG 641. Our study shows that extraskeletal calcification was present in animals treated with calcitriol and paricalcitol but not with AMG 641. When used in combination with paricalcitol, AMG 641 provided excellent control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and prevented mortality associated with the use of vitamin D derivatives without causing tissue calcification

Autonomous error correction of a single logical qubit using two transmons

Large-scale quantum computers will inevitably need quantum error correction to protect information against decoherence. Traditional error correction typically requires many qubits, along with high-efficiency error syndrome measurement and real-time feedback. Autonomous quantum error correction (AQEC) instead uses steady-state bath engineering to perform the correction in a hardware-efficient manner. We realize an AQEC scheme, implemented with only two transmon qubits in a 2D scalable architecture, that actively corrects single-photon loss and passively suppresses low-frequency dephasing using six microwave drives. Compared to uncorrected encoding, factors of 2.0, 5.1, and 1.4 improvements are experimentally witnessed for the logical zero, one, and superposition states. Our results show the potential of implementing hardware-efficient AQEC to enhance the reliability of a transmon-based quantum information processor

Generación digital v.s. escuela analógica. Competencias digitales en el currículum de la Educación Obligatoria

Educational paradigms existing are currently being shaken by new skills, connected devices and digital tools, forcing education to consider the opportunities that technology offers and the digital competences that it implies. The study presented shows empirical evidences on how students are developing these skills in informal scenarios, spending much time on the Internet, while, these competences, even being recognized by legislation with equal importance than others, are not being developed by educational system in Spain. The research is applied on a sample of 678 Primary School students and the main scope is analysing the use and frequency of use of ICT and its degree of integration into everyday activities in informal scenarios. Ex-post-facto methodologies are used through quantitative techniques, an ad hoc questionnaire has being designed as a tool for data collection. Results point to a generation of students who have acquired digital skills before having fully acquired the reading-writing skills. Data collected evidence, as well, that students use all kind of devices, surf the Internet, take pictures, edit them, download applications and search for tutorials in You Tube. Taking into account the results obtained the curricular inclusion of digital competence beyond its legal descriptive recognition is proposed
