    Let C_\la and C_\ga be two affine Cantor sets in R\mathbb{R} with similarity dimensions d_\la and d_\ga, respectively. We define an analog of the Bandt-Graf condition for self-similar systems and use it to give necessary and sufficient conditions for having \Ha^{d_\la+d_\ga}(C_\la + C_\ga)>0 where C_\la + C_\ga denotes the arithmetic sum of the sets. We use this result to analyze the orthogonal projection properties of sets of the form C_\la \times C_\ga. We prove that for Lebesgue almost all directions θ\theta for which the projection is not one-to-one, the projection has zero (d_\la + d_\ga)-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We demonstrate the results on the case when C_\la and C_\ga are the middle-(1-2\la) and middle-(1-2\ga) sets

    Smooth and Non-Smooth Dependence of Lyapunov Vectors upon the Angle Variable on a Torus in the Context of Torus-Doubling Transitions in the Quasiperiodically Forced Henon Map

    A transition from a smooth torus to a chaotic attractor in quasiperiodically forced dissipative systems may occur after a finite number of torus-doubling bifurcations. In this paper we investigate the underlying bifurcational mechanism which seems to be responsible for the termination of the torus-doubling cascades on the routes to chaos in invertible maps under external quasiperiodic forcing. We consider the structure of a vicinity of a smooth attracting invariant curve (torus) in the quasiperiodically forced Henon map and characterize it in terms of Lyapunov vectors, which determine directions of contraction for an element of phase space in a vicinity of the torus. When the dependence of the Lyapunov vectors upon the angle variable on the torus is smooth, regular torus-doubling bifurcation takes place. On the other hand, the onset of non-smooth dependence leads to a new phenomenon terminating the torus-doubling bifurcation line in the parameter space with the torus transforming directly into a strange nonchaotic attractor. We argue that the new phenomenon plays a key role in mechanisms of transition to chaos in quasiperiodically forced invertible dynamical systems.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Temperature dependence of interlayer coupling in perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with GdOx barriers

    Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with GdOX tunneling barriers have shown a unique voltage controllable interlayer magnetic coupling effect. Here we investigate the quality of the GdOX barrier and the coupling mechanism in these junctions by examining the temperature dependence of the tunneling magnetoresistance and the interlayer coupling from room temperature down to 11 K. The barrier is shown to be of good quality with the spin independent conductance only contributing a small portion, 14%, to the total room temperature conductance, similar to AlOX and MgO barriers. The interlayer coupling, however, shows an anomalously strong temperature dependence including sign changes below 80 K. This non-trivial temperature dependence is not described by previous models of interlayer coupling and may be due to the large induced magnetic moment of the Gd ions in the barrier.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Ultrasonic NDT and Imaging of Centrifugally Cast Stainless Steel Samples

    Centrifugally cast stainless steel (CCSS) components are currently being used in many critical industrial applications such as nuclear reactors, which have stringent inspection requirements. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of these components are governed by strict guidelines to insure safe operating conditions. Current literature indicates that ultrasonic NDT techniques provide potentially the most promising and reliable methods for the inspection of CCSS components. However, the received signal often has low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to ultrasonic attenuation caused by grain scattering. Furthermore, ultrasonic inspection of CCSS components is plagued by high attenuation, velocity variations, mode conversion, beam divergence and/or convergence, and skewing. Therefore, the signals arising from metallurgical discontinuities or defects caused by thermal fatigue and stress corrosion, can appear to a manual ultrasonic inspector as random, stationary-noise signals. The ability to detect such defects is at best limited with the conventional non-destructive evaluation techniques. In this paper, some spectral methods are presented to improve flaw visibility by reducing the background noise from the CCSS microstructure.</p

    We study some global aspects of the bifurcation of an equivariant family of volume-contracting vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere. When part of the symmetry is broken, the vector fields exhibit Bykov cycles. Close to the symmetry, we investigate the mechanism of the emergence of heteroclinic tangencies coexisting with transverse connections. There is thus a need for inexpensive and non-invasive screening methods that are able to accurately estimate brain amyloid burden as a marker of Alzheimer's disease. One potential method would involve using demographic information and measurements on plasma samples to establish biomarkers of brain amyloid burden; in this study data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative was used to explore this possibility. Sixteen of the analytes on the Rules Based Medicine Human Discovery Multi-Analyte Profile 1.0 panel were found to associate with [(11)C]-PiB PET measurements. Some of these markers of brain amyloid burden were also found to associate with other AD related phenotypes. Thirteen of these markers of brain amyloid burden--c-peptide, fibrinogen, alpha-1-antitrypsin, pancreatic polypeptide, complement C3, vitronectin, cortisol, AXL receptor kinase, interleukin-3, interleukin-13, matrix metalloproteinase-9 total, apolipoprotein E and immunoglobulin E--were used along with co-variates in multiple linear regression, and were shown by cross-validation to explain >30% of the variance of brain amyloid burden. When a threshold was used to classify subjects as PiB positive, the regression model was found to predict actual PiB positive individuals with a sensitivity of 0.918 and a specificity of 0.545.     Spending time, spending money: passenger segmentation in an international airport

    Changes within the air transport sector have required many European airports to either develop or expand their commercial activities. Strategies have included the expansion of retail space, a broadening of the tenant and merchandise mix and the development of a passenger segmentation strategy. This paper explores the efficacy of this approach by identifying the behaviour of different passenger segments while in an international airport. Using a framework of strategic market segmentation, it identifies how travellers allocate their time having entered 'airside' and details any purchases made. Using observational research and a face to face quantitative survey, 301 passengers were tracked and interviewed. Through a broad based, a priori form of segmentation, significant differences in shopping behaviour are identified. Such findings assist with the development of the airport's commercial strategy and allow a number of observations to be made about the value of market segmentation from both a theoretical and managerial perspective
