Consulting the rival for innovation : the educational and aesthetical values of Henri Matisse's Islamic experience

University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This thesis argues the influences of Islamic art on the work of Henri Matisse. The study investigates the educational and aesthetic values of these influences. It is informed by the argument that Matisse has succeeded in mixing his European artistic traditions with Islamic art traditions, and that such a mixture has the potential to change not only the way we do and appreciate art, but also the philosophy that underpins art making and understanding. Based on Matisse's Islamic experience, this research explores the significance of exposing the artistic self to the artistic other. It argues that hybridity in art, culture and eduaction has the potential to generate new meanings, based on difference rather than conformity, and that such differences are energizing. Recognition of the other in artistic experience may influence both artistic and educational discourse. Studying Matisse from Islamic perspectives is unique, and represents reading a non-Western point of view as well as the opportunity to explore links with contemporary educational, social, cultural and political issues. Within its educational perspectives, this study explores Matisse's Islamic experience in relation to a contemporary school context in which the positive impact of such an experience on a teaching and learning art is investigated

Probing the role of Nd3+ ions in the weak multiferroic character of NdMn2O5 by optical spectroscopies

Raman and infrared spectroscopies are used as local probes to study the dynamics of the Nd-O bonds in the weakly multiferroic NdMn2O5 system. The temperature dependence of selected Raman excitations reveals the splitting of the Nd-O bonds in NdMn2O5. The Nd3+ ion crystal field (CF) excitations in NdMn2O5 single crystals are studied by infrared transmission as a function of temperature, in the 1800-8000 cm-1 range, and under an applied magnetic field up to 11 T. The frequencies of all 4Ij crystal-field levels of Nd3+ are determined. We find that the degeneracy of the ground-state Kramers doublet is lifted ({\Delta}0 ~7.5 cm-1) due to the Nd3+-Mn3+ interaction in the ferroelectric phase, below TC ~ 28 K. The Nd3+ magnetic moment mNd(T) and its contribution to the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are evaluated from {\Delta}0(T) indicating that the Nd3+ ions are involved in the magnetic and the ferroelectric ordering observed below ~ 28 K. The Zeeman splitting of the excited crystal field levels of the Nd3+ ions at low temperature is also analyzed.Comment: This paper is accepted for publication as a Regular Article in Physical Review

A Prediction Model for the Calculation of Effective Stiffness Ratios of Reinforced Concrete Columns

Nonlinear dynamic analyses of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings require the use of effective stiffness of members to capture the effect of cracked section stiffness. In the design codes and practices, the effective stiffness of RC sections is given as an empirical fraction of the gross stiffness. However, a more precise estimation of the effective stiffness is important as it affects the distribution of forces and various demands and response parameters in nonlinear dynamic analyses. In this study, an evolutionary computation method called gene expression programming (GEP) was used to predict the effective stiffness ratios of RC columns. Constitutive relationships were obtained by correlating the effective stiffness ratio with the four mechanical and geometrical parameters. The model was developed using a database of 226 samples of nonlinear dynamic analysis results collected from another study by the author. Subsequent parametric and sensitivity analyses were performed and the trends of the results were confirmed. The results indicate that the GEP model provides precise estimations of the effective stiffness ratios of the RC frame

A note on light velocity anisotropy

    Get PDF
It is proved that in experiments on or near the Earth, no anisotropy in the one-way velocity of light may be detected. The very accurate experiments which have been performed to detect such an effect are to be considered significant tests of both special relativity and the equivalence principleComment: 8 pages, LaTex, Gen. Distributed System Contract Monitoring

The use of behavioural contracts, to specify, regulate and verify systems, is particularly relevant to runtime monitoring of distributed systems. System distribution poses major challenges to contract monitoring, from monitoring-induced information leaks to computation load balancing, communication overheads and fault-tolerance. We present mDPi, a location-aware process calculus, for reasoning about monitoring of distributed systems. We define a family of Labelled Transition Systems for this calculus, which allow formal reasoning about different monitoring strategies at different levels of abstractions. We also illustrate the expressivity of the calculus by showing how contracts in a simple contract language can be synthesised into different mDPi monitors.Comment: In Proceedings FLACOS 2011, arXiv:1109.239

Evolution of Thick Walls in Curved Spacetimes

We generalize our previous thick shell formalism to incorporate any codimension-1 thick wall with a peculiar velocity and proper thickness bounded by arbitrary spacetimes. Within this new formulation we obtain the equation of motion of a spherically symmetric dust thick shell immersed in vacuum as well as in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

Historical Scientific Racism and Psychiatric Publications: A Necessary International Anti-racist Code of Ethics

    Get PDF
Ethical aspects of publishing in scientific journals are an important issue addressed since the late 1970s by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (1978). Today, medical journals also benefit from other international organizations’ recommendations such as the Committee on Publication Ethics, World Association of Medical Editors, and World Health Organization (WHO). These international best practices guidelines cover various ethical issues related to integrity in research, authorship, conflicts of interest, and so on

    Aspects of Fractional Superstrings

We investigate some issues relating to recently proposed fractional superstring theories with Dcritical<10D_{\rm critical}<10. Using the factorization approach of Gepner and Qiu, we systematically rederive the partition functions of the K=4, 8,K=4,\, 8, and 1616 theories and examine their spacetime supersymmetry. Generalized GSO projection operators for the K=4K=4 model are found. Uniqueness of the twist field, ϕK/4K/4\phi^{K/4}_{K/4}, as source of spacetime fermions is demonstrated. Last, we derive a linear (rather than quadratic) relationship between the required conformal anomaly and the conformal dimension of the supercurrent ghost.Comment: 36 pages, CALT-68-1756 Revisions to match form to appear in Comm. Math. Phys. Use standard TeX. Derivation of affine partition functions related to D=4,6D=4,6 models is now shown. References Update
