    An Investigation of Herbivory and Seed Predation on Slickspot Peppergrass

    This study was completed during the summers of 2014 and 2015 to continue research on the relationship between harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex salinus) and slickspot peppergrass (Lepidium papilliferum). Slickspot peppergrass is a rare mustard endemic to south western Idaho. Over the past century, the species has declined in abundance, largely as a result of habitat degradation and fragmentation. In addition to these reasons for decline, seed foraging by harvester ants and plant destruction by harvester ants and small mammal herbivores have been recently indicated as potential factors. This study confirmed that harvester ants remove large numbers of L. papilliferum seeds. Specifically, we found that 90–100% of the seeds produced by individual plants were often removed by ants, regardless of the number of seeds within the foraging range of a colony. Nevertheless, although intensive seed foraging was common, we estimated that the number of seeds available to individual ant colonies often exceeded the colony’s capacity for seed removal. Thus, when seed numbers are high, predator satiation may be a viable mechanism for L. papilliferum seeds to escape seed removal by harvester ants. In addition to documenting the occurrence and intensity of seed removal by ants, we confirmed that small mammals and harvester ants sometimes act as herbivores on leaf and (in the case of mammals) root tissues. Mortality as a result of herbivory was at times high, although understanding the causes of variation in patterns of herbivory will require further study. In addition to investigating seed predation and herbivory on naturally occurring plants, we evaluated whether seed introductions represent a viable tool for recovery of slickspot peppergrass. We were successful in germinating L. papilliferum seeds, although our efforts were severely hampered by seed predation by harvester ants. In order for seed introductions to become a feasible approach to recovery efforts for L. papilliferum, a method to mitigate the effects of seed predation will be needed.     A New X-Ray Analysis of the Open Cluster Blanco 1 Using Wide-Field BVIc Photometric and Proper Motion Surveys

    We perform a new analysis of the extant ROSAT and XMM-Newton X-ray surveys of the southern open cluster Blanco 1, utilizing new BVIc photometric and proper motion data sets. In our study, we match optical counterparts to 47 X-ray sources associated with Blanco 1 cluster members, 6 of which were listed in previous X-ray studies as cluster nonmembers. Our new catalog of optical counterparts to X-ray sources clearly traces out the Blanco 1 main sequence in a CMD, extending from early G to mid-M spectral types. Additionally, we derive new Lx as well as Lx/Lbol ratios for confirmed cluster members. We compare these X-ray properties to other young open clusters, including the coeval Pleiades cluster, to investigate the relationship between age and X-ray activity. We find that stars in Blanco 1 generally exhibit X-ray properties similar to those of other open clusters, namely increasing Lx/Lbol with reducing mass for earlier-type stars, and a saturation limit of Lx/Lbol at a magnitude of 10^-3 for stars with V-Ic > 1.25. More generally, the X-ray detected stars in Blanco 1 have X-ray emission magnitudes that agree with the overall trends seen in the other young clusters. In a direct comparison of Blanco 1 to the Pleiades open cluster, members of both clusters have similar X-ray characteristics; however, there does appear to be some discrepancies in the distribution of Lx/Lbol as a function of color that may be related to scatter seen in the Pleiades CMD. Moreover, previous comparisons of this nature for Blanco 1 were not possible due to the reliance on photographic photometry. This is where the power of precise, homogeneous, and standardized CCD photometry allows for a high fidelity, detailed study of the X-ray properties of stars in Blanco 1.     In this review I briefly discuss the theory of pre-main-sequence (PMS) Li depletion in low-mass (0.075<M<1.2 Msun) stars and highlight those uncertain parameters which lead to substantial differences in model predictions. Hilbert–Kunz multiplicity and F-signature are numerical invariants of commutative rings in positive characteristic that measure severity of singularities: for a regular ring both invariants are equal to one and the converse holds under mild assumptions. A natural question is for what singular rings these invariants are closest to one. For Hilbert–Kunz multiplicity this question was first considered by the last two authors and attracted significant attention.     We report the present day mass functions (PDMFs) of 3 young open clusters over a mass range from 30 Jupiter masses to 10~\msunn. The PDMFs of the 3 clusters are remarkably similar, suggesting little impact of specific conditions (stellar density, metallicity, early dynamical evolution) on the mass distribution.     The distribution of pond snail communities across a landscape: separating out the influence of spatial position from local habitat quality for ponds in south-east Northumberland, UK

    Ponds support a rich biodiversity because the heterogeneity of individual ponds creates, at the landscape scale, a diversity of habitats for wildlife. The distribution of pond animals and plants will be influenced by both the local conditions within a pond and the spatial distribution of ponds across the landscape. Separating out the local from the spatial is difficult because the two are often linked. Pond snails are likely to be affected by both local conditions, e.g. water hardness, and spatial patterns, e.g. distance between ponds, but studies of snail communities struggle distinguishing between the two. In this study, communities of snails were recorded from 52 ponds in a biogeographically coherent landscape in north-east England. The distribution of snail communities was compared to local environments characterised by the macrophyte communities within each pond and to the spatial pattern of ponds throughout the landscape. Mantel tests were used to partial out the local versus the landscape respective influences. Snail communities became more similar in ponds that were closer together and in ponds with similar macrophyte communities as both the local and the landscape scale were important for this group of animals. Data were collected from several types of ponds, including those created on nature reserves specifically for wildlife, old field ponds (at least 150 years old) primarily created for watering livestock and subsidence ponds outside protected areas or amongst coastal dunes. No one pond type supported all the species. Larger, deeper ponds on nature reserves had the highest numbers of species within individual ponds but shallow, temporary sites on farm land supported a distinct temporary water fauna. The conservation of pond snails in this region requires a diversity of pond types rather than one idealised type and ponds scattered throughout the area at a variety of sites, not just concentrated on nature reserves
