Exclusion Statistics in Conformal Field Theory Spectra
We propose a new method for investigating the exclusion statistics of
quasi-particles in Conformal Field Theory (CFT) spectra. The method leads to
one-particle distribution functions, which generalize the Fermi-Dirac
distribution. For the simplest invariant CFTs we find a generalization
of Gentile parafermions, and we obtain new distributions for the simplest
-invariant CFTs. In special examples, our approach reproduces
distributions based on `fractional exclusion statistics' in the sense of
Haldane. We comment on applications to fractional quantum Hall effect edge
theories.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX (uses revtex
Exclusonic Quasiparticles and Thermodynamics of Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids
Quasielectrons and quasiholes in the fractional quantum Hall liquids obey
fractional (including nontrivial mutual) exclusion statistics. Their statistics
matrix can be determined from several possible state-counting scheme, involving
different assumptions on statistical correlations. Thermal activation of
quasiparticle pairs and thermodynamic properties of the fractional quantum Hall
liquids near fillings ( odd) at low temperature are studied in the
approximation of generalized ideal gas. The existence of hierarchical states in
the fractional quantum Hall effect is shown to be a manifestation of the
exclusonic nature of the relevant quasiparticles. For magnetic properties, a
paramagnetism-diamagnetism transition appears to be possible at finite
temperature.Comment: latex209, REVTE
On the virial coefficients of nonabelian anyons
We study a system of nonabelian anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong
magnetic field. Using diagrammatic techniques, we prove that the virial
coefficients do not depend on the statistics parameter. This is true for all
representations of all nonabelian groups for the statistics of the particles
and relies solely on the fact that the effective statistical interaction is a
traceless operator.Comment: 9 pages, 3 eps figure
Metastability and Nucleation for the Blume-Capel Model. Different mechanisms of transition
We study metastability and nucleation for the Blume-Capel model: a
ferromagnetic nearest neighbour two-dimensional lattice system with spin
variables taking values in -1,0,+1. We consider large but finite volume, small
fixed magnetic field h and chemical potential "lambda" in the limit of zero
temperature; we analyze the first excursion from the metastable -1
configuration to the stable +1 configuration. We compute the asymptotic
behaviour of the transition time and describe the typical tube of trajectories
during the transition. We show that, unexpectedly, the mechanism of transition
changes abruptly when the line h=2*lambda is crossed.Comment: 96 pages, 44 tex-figures, 7 postscript figure
Thermoacoustic tomography with an arbitrary elliptic operator
Thermoacoustic tomography is a term for the inverse problem of determining of
one of initial conditions of a hyperbolic equation from boundary measurements.
In the past publications both stability estimates and convergent numerical
methods for this problem were obtained only under some restrictive conditions
imposed on the principal part of the elliptic operator. In this paper
logarithmic stability estimates are obatined for an arbitrary variable
principal part of that operator. Convergence of the Quasi-Reversibility Method
to the exact solution is also established for this case. Both complete and
incomplete data collection cases are considered.Comment: 16 page
Thermoacoustic tomography arising in brain imaging
We study the mathematical model of thermoacoustic and photoacoustic
tomography when the sound speed has a jump across a smooth surface. This models
the change of the sound speed in the skull when trying to image the human
brain. We derive an explicit inversion formula in the form of a convergent
Neumann series under the assumptions that all singularities from the support of
the source reach the boundary
Effect of lithographically-induced strain relaxation on the magnetic domain configuration in microfabricated epitaxially grown Fe81Ga19
We investigate the role of lithographically-induced strain relaxation in a micron-scaled device fabricated from epitaxial thin films of the magnetostrictive alloy Fe81Ga19. The strain relaxation due to lithographic patterning induces a magnetic anisotropy that competes with the magnetocrystalline and shape induced anisotropy to play a crucial role in stabilising a flux-closing domain pattern. We use magnetic imaging, micromagnetic calculations and linear elastic modelling to investigate a region close to the edges of an etched structure. This highly-strained edge region has a significant influence on the magnetic domain configuration due to an induced magnetic anisotropy resulting from the inverse magnetostriction effect. We investigate the competition between the strain-induced and shape-induced anisotropy energies, and the resultant stable domain configurations, as the width of the bar is reduced to the nanoscale range. Understanding this behaviour will be important when designing hybrid magneto-electric spintronic devices based on highly magnetostrictive materials
An inverse source problem for the heat equation and the enclosure method
An inverse source problem for the heat equation is considered. Extraction
formulae for information about the time and location when and where the unknown
source of the equation firstly appeared are given from a single lateral
boundary measurement. New roles of the plane progressive wave solutions or
their complex versions for the backward heat equation are given.Comment: 23page
Influence of the high-power ion-beam irradiation of a hydroxyapatite target on the properties of formed calcium phosphate coatings
The physical-mechanical of properties of biocompatible calcium phosphate coatings deposited onto titanium and silicon substrates from erosion materials, which are generated by irradiating hydroxyapatite (synthetic and natural) targets by means of the high-power pulsed ion beam of a Temp-4 accelerator, are investigated. A calculation technique for predicting the rate and energy efficiency of deposition using pulsed ion beams is proposed. Their characteristics are analyzed as applied to the formation of calcium phosphate coatings
