Weighted Chebyshev Distance Algorithms for Hyperspectral Target Detection and Classification Applications
In this study, an efficient spectral similarity method referred to as Weighted Chebyshev Distance (WCD) is introduced for supervised classification of hyperspectral imagery (HSI) and target detection applications. The WCD is based on a simple spectral similarity based decision rule using limited amount of reference data. The estimation of upper and lower spectral boundaries of spectral signatures for all classes across spectral bands is referred to as a vector tunnel (VT). To obtain the reference information, the training signatures are provided randomly from existing data for a known class. After determination of the parameters of the WCD algorithm with the training set, classification or detection procedures are accomplished at each pixel. The comparative performances of the algorithms are tested under various cases.
The decision criterion for classification of an input vector is based on choosing its class corresponding to the narrowest VT that the input vector fits in to. This is also shown to be approximated by the WCD in which the weights are chosen as an inverse power of the generalized standard deviation per spectral band. In computer experiments, the WCD classifier is compared with the Euclidian Distance (ED) classifier and the Spectral Angle Map (SAM) classifier.
The WCD algorithm is also used for HSI target detection purpose. Target detection problem is considered as a two-class classification problem. The WCD is characterized only by the target class spectral information. Then, this method is compared with ED, SAM, Spectral Matched Filter (SMF), Adaptive Cosine Estimator (ACE) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Injured retinas in mammals do not regenerate and heal with loss of function. The adult retina of zebrafish self-repairs after damage by activating cell-intrinsic mechanisms, which are regulated by extrinsic signal interactions. Among relevant regulatory extrinsic systems, purinergic signaling regulates progenitor proliferation during retinogenesis and regeneration and glia proliferation in proliferative retinopathies. ATP-activated P2X7 (P2RX7) and adenosine (P1R) receptors are involved in the progression of almost all retinopathies leading to blindness. Here, we examined P2RX7 and P1R participation in the retina regenerative response induced by photoreceptor damage caused by a specific dose of CoCl2. First, we found that treatment of uninjured retinas with a potent agonist of P2RX7 (BzATP) provoked photoreceptor damage and mitotic activation of multipotent progenitors. In CoCl2-injured retinas, blockade of endogenous extracellular ATP activity on P2RX7 caused further neurodegeneration, Müller cell gliosis, progenitor proliferation, and microglia reactivity. P2RX7 inhibition in injured retinas also increased the expression of lin28a and tnfα genes, which are related to multipotent progenitor proliferation. Levels of hif1α, vegf3r, and vegfaa mRNA were enhanced by blockade of P2RX7 immediately after injury, indicating hypoxic like damage and endothelial cell growth and proliferation. Complete depletion of extracellular nucleotides with an apyrase treatment strongly potentiated cell death and progenitor proliferation induced with CoCl2. Blockade of adenosine P1 and A2A receptors (A2AR) had deleterious effects and deregulated normal timing for progenitor and precursor cell proliferation following photoreceptor damage. Peacock Bundles: Bundle Coloring for Graphs with Globality-Locality Trade-off
Bundling of graph edges (node-to-node connections) is a common technique to
enhance visibility of overall trends in the edge structure of a large graph
layout, and a large variety of bundling algorithms have been proposed. However,
with strong bundling, it becomes hard to identify origins and destinations of
individual edges. We propose a solution: we optimize edge coloring to
differentiate bundled edges. We quantify strength of bundling in a flexible
pairwise fashion between edges, and among bundled edges, we quantify how
dissimilar their colors should be by dissimilarity of their origins and
destinations. We solve the resulting nonlinear optimization, which is also
interpretable as a novel dimensionality reduction task. In large graphs the
necessary compromise is whether to differentiate colors sharply between locally
occurring strongly bundled edges ("local bundles"), or also between the weakly
bundled edges occurring globally over the graph ("global bundles"); we allow a
user-set global-local tradeoff. We call the technique "peacock bundles".
Experiments show the coloring clearly enhances comprehensibility of graph

Characterization of proliferative, glial and angiogenic responses after a CoCl2-induced injury of photoreceptor cells in the adult zebrafish retina
The adult zebrafish is considered a useful model for studying mechanisms involved in tissue growth and regeneration. We have characterized cytotoxic damage to the retina of adult zebrafish caused by the injection of cobalt chloride (CoCl2) into the vitreous cavity. The CoCl2 concentration we used primarily caused injury to photoreceptors. We observed the complete disappearance of cones, followed by rods, across the retina surface from 28 to 96 hr after CoCl2 injury. The loss of 30% of bipolar cells was also observed by 50 hr after lesion (hpl). CoCl2 injury provoked a strong induction of the proliferative activity of multipotent Müller glia and derived progenitors. The effect of CoCl2 on retina cells was significantly reduced by treatment with glutamate ionotropic receptor antagonists. Cone photoreceptor regeneration occurred 25 days after injury. Moreover, a single dose of CoCl2 induced vascular damage and regeneration, whereas three injections of CoCl2 administered weekly provoked neovascular-like changes 20 days after injury. CoCl2 injury also caused microglial reactivity in the optic disc, retina periphery and fibre layer. CoCl2-induced damage enhanced pluripotency and proneural transcription factor gene expression in the mature retina 72 hpl. Tumour necrosis factor alpha, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor mRNA levels were also significantly enhanced by 72 hpl. The injury paradigm we have described in this work may be useful for the discovery of signalling molecules and pathways that participate in the regenerative response and it may serve as a model to screen for compounds that could potentially treat aberrant angiogenesis.Fil: Medrano, Matias. Multiple subduction imprints in the mantle below Italy detected in a single lava flow
Post-collisional magmatism reflects the regional subduction history prior to collision but the link between the two is complex and often poorly understood. The collision of continents along a convergent plate boundary commonly marks the onset of a variety of transitional geodynamic processes. Typical responses include delamination of subducting lithosphere, crustal thickening in the overriding plate, slab detachment and asthenospheric upwelling, or the complete termination of convergence. A prominent example is the Western-Central Mediterranean, where the ongoing slow convergence of Africa and Europe (Eurasia) has been accommodated by a variety of spreading and subduction systems that dispersed remnants of subducted lithosphere into the mantle, creating a compositionally wide spectrum of magmatism. Using lead isotope compositions of a set of melt inclusions in magmatic olivine crystals we detect exceptional heterogeneity in the mantle domain below Central Italy, which we attribute to the presence of continental material, introduced initially by Alpine and subsequently by Apennine subduction. We show that superimposed subduction imprints of a mantle source can be tapped during a melting episode millions of years later, and are recorded in a single lava flow
Exploration speed in captivity predicts foraging tactics and diet in free-living red knots
1. Variation in foraging tactics and diet is usually attributed to differences in morphology, experience and prey availability. Recently, consistent individual differences in behaviour (personality) have been shown to be associated with foraging strategies. Bolder or more exploratory individuals are predicted to have a faster pace‐of‐life and offset the costs of moving more or in risky areas, with higher energetic gains by encountering profitable foraging opportunities and prey. However, the relationship between personality, foraging and diet is poorly understood. 2. We investigated how exploratory behaviour in red knots Calidris canutus is associated with foraging tactics and diet by combining laboratory experiments, field observations and stable isotope analysis. First, we developed a mobile experimental arena to measure exploration speed in controlled settings. We validated the method by repeated testing of individuals over time and contexts. This setup allowed us to measure exploratory personality at the field site, eliminating the need to bring birds into captivity for long periods of time. After releasing birds within days of their capture, we asked whether exploration speed was associated with differences in foraging tactics and diet in the wild. 3. We found that tactile foraging red knots mainly caught hard‐shelled prey that are buried in the sediment, whereas visual foraging knots only captured soft preys located close to or on the surface. We also found that faster explorers showed a higher percentage of visual foraging than slower explorers. By contrast, morphology (bill length and gizzard size) had no significant effect on foraging tactics. Diet analysis based on δ(15)N and δ(13)C stable isotope values of plasma and red blood cells confirmed our field observations with slower explorers mainly consumed hard‐shelled prey while faster explorers consumed more soft than hard‐shelled prey. 4. Our results show that foraging tactics and diet are associated with a personality trait, independent of morphological differences. We discuss how consistent behaviour might develop early in life through positive feedbacks between foraging tactics, prey type and foraging efficiency
Arousal, Sleep and Cardiovascular Responses to Intermittent Hypercapnic Hypoxia in Piglets
Clinical studies have demonstrated an arousal deficit in infants suffering Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), and that treatment to alleviate the symptoms of OSA appears to reverse the deficit in arousability. Some sudden infant deaths are thought to be contingent upon such an arousal deficit. This research utilised young piglets during early postnatal development, and exposed them to intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia (IHH) as a model of clinical respiratory diseases. Arousal responses of control animals were compared to the animals exposed to IHH. Comparisons were also made between successive exposures on the first and the fourth consecutive days of IHH. Time to arouse after the onset of the respiratory stimulus, and frequency of arousals during recovery, demonstrated that arousal deficits arose after successive exposures and that these were further exacerbated on the fourth study day. After an overnight recovery period, the arousal deficit was apparently dormant, and only triggered by HH exposure. These studies confirm that both acute and chronic deficits can be induced on a background of otherwise normal postnatal development, suggesting that deficits observed in the clinical setting may be a secondary phenomenon
