    Estimation of Financial Agent-Based Models with Simulated Maximum Likelihood

    This paper proposes a general computational framework for empirical estimation of financial agent based models, for which criterion functions do not have known analytical form. For this purpose, we adapt a nonparametric simulated maximum likelihood estimation based on kernel methods. Employing one of the most widely analysed heterogeneous agent models in the literature developed by Brock and Hommes (1998), we extensively test properties of the proposed estimator and its ability to recover parameters consistently and efficiently using simulations. Key empirical findings point us to the statistical insignificance of the switching coefficient but markedly significant belief parameters defining heterogeneous trading regimes with superiority of trend-following over contrarian strategies. In addition, we document slight proportional dominance of fundamentalists over trend following chartists in main world markets

    Numerical implementation of absorbing and injecting boundary conditions for the time-dependent Schrodinger-equation

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.A method is described that enables the absorption and injection of wave functions at the boundaries of a region in a numerical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. A number of results corresponding to one- and two-dimensional simulations are presented. Such boundary conditions enable the use of time-dependent simulations of geometries connected to contacts that correspond to sources and sinks of particles in thermal equilibrium. The approach presented has a number of attractive features from a numerical-implementation point of view. © 1995 The American Physical Society

    Subungual myiasis in a woman with psychiatric disturbance

    WOS: 000260514600016PubMed ID: 18571464Myiasis is caused by the invasion of tissues or organs of men and animals by dipterous larvae. The disease is infrequent in Turkey. A case of a 65-year-old woman having been initially diagnosed with chronic psychosis, and found to have a left big toe nail invaded by the larvae of Calliphora spp., is presented. A total of 17 maggots were removed from the left big toe of the patient, which were then determined as Calliphora spp. The patient has undergone surgical withdrawal of both nails of her big toes, followed by the administration of oral prophylactic antimicrobial treatment. This is the second recorded case of subungual myiasis by Calliphora spp. in Turkey. Myiasis should be considered in patients with lower personal hygiene, especially with chronic psychiatric disturbances. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

    Spatial Reflections of Population Movements in Gokceada and Sustainable Tourism

    Since the foundation of the Republic of Turkey Gokceada has experienced many population movements due to various internal and external factors. While some of the citizens of the Island who were the inhabitants of the traditional settlements left, they were replaced by new dwellers. This transformation in the population undoubtedly has paved the way for certain changes in the cultural and spatial structure. Besides all these changes, the demand for tourism in the Island has increased recently. Yet, there is a general expectation that the unique natural beauty and historical heritage of the Island should be preserved, and for this reason the quality of tourism has an immense significance in terms of preserving its natural areas, and its history as a social memory. In this study, population movements have occurred since the foundation of the Republic of Turkey is evaluated with respect to the preservation of the cultural heritage and sustainability of tourism.
