    Get PDF
With the recognition of English as a Lingua Franca, intercultural communication has gained great importance. As a result, culture teaching has become an indispensable component of EFL classrooms. Even though there has been extensive research on the attitudes of EFL teachers towards culture teaching, few studies were found bringing attention to the differences between private and state school teachers to this end. The purpose of this research is therefore to shed light on private and state school EFL teachers’ attitudes towards culture teaching, their classroom practices, and the obstacles they come across upon this. The participants are 72 EFL teachers (32 state, 32 private) working at different institutions in Turkey. The data were collected employing a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that both private and state school teachers have positive attitudes towards culture incorporation in their lessons. However, private school EFL teachers were proven to have more positive opinions about culture teaching. The findings also indicated that both private and state school EFL teachers integrate culture into their lessons to some extent. However, both groups reported some obstacles that they come across while teaching culture. The details are further discussed and the implications are made in the article. Article visualizations

The purpose of the present study is to shed light on the attitudes of Turkish EFL teachers towards online instruction (OI), the impact of training on their attitudes, the obstacles they encounter, and the strategies to deliver OI more successfully throughout the Covid-19 outbreak. The participants were 70 EFL teachers (52 female, 18 male). The data was collected through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 26. Descriptive statistics of each item was calculated and an independent sample t-test was conducted to answer the research questions. For the analysis of the interview data, the responses of the participants were transcribed and the recurring themes were identified. The results revealed that the attitudes of Turkish EFL teachers, who experienced online instruction during the Covid-19 outbreak, are not as positive as expected regarding some of the results of the related research in the literature. The interview findings revealed that EFL teachers do not feel capable of delivering online instruction effectively since they do not have adequate knowledge and necessary skills to do that. In view of the findings, it's suggested that online instruction methodology should be integrated into teacher training programs and teachers should receive an in-service training about the related subject

Aim: To observe the course of glaucoma progression after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment of patients with glaucoma. Methods: This observational case-control study included a total of 74 patients with COVID-19 infection who were diagnosed with glaucoma previously. The study focused on the left eye of 37 patients each was treated as an inpatient (group 1) or outpatient (group 2). Age, gender, existence of systemic and ocular diseases, symptoms, laboratory results, drugs used for COVID-19 and glaucoma, length of hospital stay, intraocular pressure (IOP), and central corneal thickness (CCT) values were recorded. Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (ppRNFLT), ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer complex thickness (GCIPLT), and vertical cup-disc (C-D) ratio results were compared before and after COVID-19 treatment in both groups. Results: A significant increase was observed in IOP and a significant decrease was observed in GCIPLT in both groups (groups 1 and 2 for both values p<0.01 and p=0.02, respectively) after COVID-19 infection. In both groups, the mean difference (MD) for IOP and GCIPLT values were higher in group 1. Although ppRNFLT values decreased in both groups, a significant decrease was observed in group 1 after COVID-19 infection (p=0.03). The mean C-D ratio was higher after COVID-19 infection in groups 1 and 2. (p=0.04 and p=0.051, respectively). CCT did not show a significant difference in either group (p>0.05). Conclusion: PpRNFLT and GCIPLT values were reduced and IOP and C-D ratio values were increased in glaucoma patients after COVID-19 infection. Infection progression was observed to be worse in the inpatient group.

Practical training programs constitute the essence of education for tourism and other service-oriented sectors. However, these programs take considerable time to finish, and participating students/new graduates may leave the program for a variety of reasons without finishing. Attrition can harm the overall workforce of the related institution, and it is necessary for the managers to take this factor into consideration for recruitment of these programs. In this study, it was aimed to establish an optimization model for a two-stage practical education program in which the recruits are new graduates of related departments aiming to work in a service-oriented sector. Managers in the relevant institution must decide how many new graduates to add to the program, planning for the attrition and labor capacity constraints. The goal programming technique was used for the solution of the problem and it was aimed to obtain managerial insights for the human resources management policies. No sponso

Cold chain logistics for frozen food at tourism destinations

    Get PDF
Purpose- The purpose of this paper is to explore possible distribution system models of cold chain logistics for frozen food producers serving to tourism enterprises. Methodology- The data were collected through multiple case study method. The firms interviewed were chosen from the most visited touristic destination in Turkey, Antalya. These firms differed in size and the types of products. Findings- We have observed significant differences in cold chains for tourism and 3PL-oriented retail sectors. The firms serving to tourism sector generally choose not to use 3PLs due to issues on food safety/quality despite the advantages in investment costs. Conclusion- We conclude that the reasons for the reluctance of the producers to work with 3PL providers was the very hot weather and frequent stops made at hospitality facilities which leave the cold chain prone to temperature changes and product damage as well as the high demand during peak seasons which lead to urgent order requests nonconforming to 3PL service schedules. No sponso

    Operations management for double-ended queues

    Get PDF
In this paper we have presented the double-ended queueing model with its generic form, abstract modeling extensions, different types of controls to be assumed by the management of the system, as well as optimization via various methodologies. Since its inception in 1950s, double-ended queuing model has had widespread use and recently it is observed that literature is focusing on social welfare perspectives on queues under strategically acting customers and enhanced information exchange due to advanced technology. It is also reviewed that for the complex and analytically tractable versions of double-ended queues it is possible to obtain approximate or near-optimal results via methodologies such as simulation and fluid and diffusion approximations. No sponso

Emisyon oluşumunu azaltırken araçtan elde edilen torkta ve güçte azalma istenmemektedir. Bu çalışmada 3 silindirli 4 zamanlı bir turbo şarjlı direkt püskürtmeli benzinli bir motorunun dinamometre dataları baz alınarak AVL-Boost programında model tabanlı analiz edilmiştir. Oluşturulan bu modelde emme portuna su püskürtme işlemi uygulanmış ve su püskürtmesinin motor performans etkisine sonuçları incelenmiştir. AVL-Boost modelinde su püskürtme uygulanması yanma odası sıcaklığını düşürmüş, silindir içi basıncı arttırmış ve bu silindir içine giren hava miktarını arttırmıştır. Giren hava artışı ile birlikte torkta artış meydana gelmiştir. In this study, effect on water injection is examined to understand what extent a water injection into the cylinder can have a positive effect on engine performance. This study is aimed to develop 1-D combustion model of three-cylinder, four strokes, spark ignited gasoline engine on various engine operating conditions. Çamaltı Saltern is one the most important natural sources in Turkey. It is located in the north of İzmir, within the Gediz River Basin and occupies a vast landscape with its 73 km2 land. The saltern, with its long history in salt cultivation, has become a palimpsest on which different stories have been written over and over again through centuries. What was once a 4th century BC city named Leukai, after its whiteness, surrounded by shallow white salt marshlands turned into a Macedonian saltern, called as “Halike” in Byzantine era, became one of the most important tax sources of the Ottoman Empire and materialized in its industrialisation initiatives realized by the foreign investors at the end of the 19th century, turned into the showcase of independence in improving the living conditions of the workers during the early years of the nation state of Turkish Republic, created an industrial community, reinforced the formation of an important man-made ecosystem that was acknowledged as a Ramsar site, and eventually took its share in the privatization acts of the government in 2010 and lost its neighbourhood status; yet still continues to do what it was created for, the salt production. This salt production and its salt marshes are of high importance for the migrating birds, especially flamingos as a trademark and they are registered thereof. The site is protected as RAMSAR Area (1998), Special Bird Area, Important Natural Area, Wildlife protection Area, 1st Degree Archaeological Site of Leukai (1985), and 1st Degree Natural Site (1986); however, the saltern’s elements of this unique industrial landscape are not registered, and therefore, in danger of neglect and demolition accelerated by the abandonment after privatization and the lack of awareness. The thesis, for this reason, aims to decipher the significance and the value of the saltern as an important industrial heritage to clarify its need for conservation. In order to achieve the value assessment, the scope of the thesis is defined with documentation, analysis and value assessment of the late Ottoman and early Republican developments covering the history line from 1863 to 1960. The study will be the first in its category for the Çamaltı Saltern, an industrial landscape that has been able to combine biological diversity including the dance of the flamingos and the music of the rails that has fed the mankind with its salt for hundreds of years.  M.Arch. - Master of Architectur
